If you've just eaten, you might want to skip today's blog. It's pretty gross. OK, that's enough of a warning, so read on when you're ready!

Ibrahim Langoo - a student in England - recently found out what the special ingredient was at his local KFC. While hoeing into his meal, he came across a "brain-like organ" in his meal. He took a photo of it, so now you can enjoy the sight too!

KFC surprise!

Ibrahim said, "I suddenly felt grim and really sick". You ain't the only one, Ibrahim! A spokesperson for KFC later said it was probably a kidney, not a brain. Which doesn't make me feel any better...

Really though, I'd like to thank Ibrahim for sharing his experience. Because I've been sitting on three other gross stories about meat-eating which I've wanted to share for a while, and now I have the perfect opportunity to share them with you. (Thank me later.)

1) Suppliers in Australia sold pet-meat and maggot-ridden offcuts to customers for human consumption. That lovely story here.

2) A year-long investigation revealed that most of the beef in the US suffers from "massive fecal contamination". I'll let you google "fecal" for yourself. Enjoy that story here.

3) Butchers have been glueing meat scraps together to form one bigger piece of meat which they then sell to customers. Watch that story here.

While these stories in themselves may make your stomach turn, if you think about - are they any less disturbing then eating parts of a corpse? Whether it's the leg from a chicken, a pig's belly, or flesh from a cow's backside - it's all part of the same process. The big difference is that much of the meat people eat is presented in such a way that diners don't make the connection between their meal and the animal who was killed for it. (The "final product" sold in supermarkets and restaurants also hides the mistreatment of animals before they are killed.)

Should Ibrahim have been so grossed out when he found that kidney/brain in his meal? What do you think?

There was an article in Time For Kids that my class read last year, and while we were surfing the magazine I saw another article about the horror of meat, in kid terms. They showed this "meat glue" and I was like "AHA!", and showed it to the ten people around me. My friend said she would never eat meta again. And I thought it was a pretty big victory, but I never heard about it again from nine of those people.
I asked my friend in the hall what she thought about the meat glue in the hall.

You know what she said?

"I still love meat too much."

Thank goodness I am a vegan - that photo was seriously disgusting. The last time I went to a kfc was about 6months ago when my partner asked me to get him some when he was sick and he wanted "comfort" food. I noticed a couple sitting there eating their meal while I was waiting for the food - they were eating their huge kfc greasy meal like they hasn't ever eaten before and all I could think of is - thank goodness I can't stand this kind of food - no nutritional value, greasy and cruelty to chickens to boot!

KFC is gross enough - but who knows what they pass off underneath that "special" coating. Brain or not, KFC is disgusting in every form - right from the factory farm all the way to the litter-creating packaging. Even the chicken they sell is doubtful as to it's origins or part of what animals are being passed off as food! Best thing - DON'T EAT AT KFC - grab an apple, carrot and some almonds and you have a nutritious and balanced meal right there!

That is not a kidney, it is either a brain or a testicle. KFC would be worried to admit it was a brain because of bovine spongiform encephalitis (mad cow disease). We know it did not come from a chicken so what have they done about it?.I
think this needs to go further.

Firstly, wouldn't you rather eat a brain than an organ used for filtration and waste removal?

Secondly, isn't it better that they're using all of the animal, rather than using just "prime" cuts and throwing the rest away?

Thirdly, it's KFC - of course you're going to find things in there that you wouldn't normally eat. But once it's coated in that delicious batter, deep fried, and covered in chicken salt, no one knows the difference.

Shouldn't we be more worried about the deforestation in Sumatra for the packaging KFC uses, rather than a piece of unidentifiable meat that some people may find a bit "icky"?

And with regards to the "pet meat" article. I can't see how eating horse or donkey etc is worse than beef. And kangaroo harvesting is far better for our environment in Australia than other industries based on hoofed animals such as cattle and pigs, due to the evolution of our native flora to padded paws. And kangaroo meat is better for the body too - higher protein to fat ratio.

Talk about sensationalism!

I belief ones people know the truth about where the origin is from what they're eating and how it's prepared or murdered they may think twice. Although I'm baffled by those still buying cigarettes with what's on the packets. What does it take??

I agree, it shows how people think of meat as edible objects instead of dead animal parts. People see 'delicious burger patty' instead of minced up, cooked dead carcass. But as soon as it looks identifiable it's seen as absolutely revolting and most neat eaters would refuse it. Though unless they turn veg after an incident like this, they'd probably be back for more time and time again.. Crazy world!

If Ibrahim eats flesh he should eat all parts. Flesh is not disgusting if it remains where it grew. Ibrahim and all fleshies (nickname for flesh eaters) are gluttonous  individuals responsible for ignoring the well documented terrified screams and silent suffering of those who cannot fight back or run from their hideous fate.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ONE THING! THE MEAT INDUSTRY IS A VERY ANIMAL CRUEL AND UNHEALTHY BUSINESS!
IF THE GOVERMENT OF EACH COUNTRY ALL AROUND THE WORLD DOES NOT INVOLVE  IT SELF AND CONTROLL THE MISTREATMENT OF THOSE ANIMALS BEFORE THEIR SLAUGHTER - EXPECIALLY IN THOSE COUNTRIES WHERE ANIMALS HAVE NO RIGHTS AT ALL AND ARE ABUSED BEFORE THEIR SLAUGHTER, PEOPLE WILL EAT ONLY SICK MEAT WHICH ACTUALLY THEN MAKES THEM MORE SICK ONCE EATED!!  THE MOST BIG ISSUE IS THE TIME FRAME AND THE MONEY - PROFITS WHICH ARE MADE FROM THE MEAT INDUSTRY AND FARMERS WHO ARE MORE FIXED ON DELIVERING THE MEAT IN TIME, AS LOOKING AFTER THEIR ANIMALS FROM THESE ANIMALS ABUSER WHO WORK IN THOSE SLAUGHTER HOUSES! WE NEED TO MAKE A BIG CHANGES THROUGH ALL THE WHOLE SISTEM!!  IF NOT,  ANIMALS WILL KEEP ON SUFFERING AND HUMANS WILL GET MORE AND MORE SICK THROUGH THE UNHEALTHY MEAT THEY EAT!  I RATHER EAT NO MEAT ANY MORE!! BECAUSE I CAN NOT TRUST THIS BLOODY SISTEM!!!

Oh no! God forbid I found a dead animal part IN MY BOX OF DEAD ANIMAL PARTS. The moment we're confronted with a part of meat that resembles the animal it came from, we're horrified because we have no natural carnivorous instinct and don't actually want to acknowledge that our food was a once living, sentient being... I don't know what he expected, really; chickens have brains.
