As if it wasn't enough that the dairy industry impregnates a cow and sends her calf to slaughter to profit from her milk, now they're doing this too ...

It's been given the nickname 'cow mootel,' though it's certainly not a place I'd want to check in to. Rather than being allowed to graze in a paddock, cows are put into individual 'chambers' approximately four metres by five metres in size and three metres high. Each cow is isolated, with only the view of another cow suffering in the same way through a glass window. She's harnessed and made to wear what has been described as a nappy and then the temperature is turned up.

Cows produce less milk in hot weather. (Let's be honest, we all get a little bit sluggish in the heat.) But this is bad news for the dairy industry as it means that their most important asset is suffering. Their $$, that is.

The 6 'mootel' rooms are part of a science experiment at the National Dairy Centre in Victoria to study the impacts of heat stress on cows. The Victorian Government spent $2.5 million to help build these hot isolation chambers. Cows will be milked and have their 'nappies' changed regularly -- their faeces and urine collected for research. Scientists will study a cow's productivity and emissions with the temperature at 32 degrees for days at a time, which is like being exposed to a heatwave for the cows inside.

Dairy research scientist, Dr Jacobs, said they had the ability to 'dial these up higher' at any time but that it would have animal welfare concerns to take temperatures up to 40 degrees and then put cows back outside to 14 degrees. (Sadly, the Australian live export industry doesn't have the same concerns about subjecting animals to a jump to 40+ degree temperatures. Find out about heat stress on live export animals.)

Dr Jacobs says that the glass windows between these oven-like chambers are also a deliberate animal welfare consideration. "The ability for a cow that's in one of these calorimeters for three or four days to be able to see her neighbour is very much part of keeping her happy," Dr Jacobs said.

Cows are very social animals who not only have best friends, but can get stressed when separated. In these chambers they are powerless to do anything more than suffer in solitude and watch their herd mate be subjected to the same thing on the other side of the glass.

Not surprisingly, the media was asked not to take photos of the cows in their nappies and sweltering hot chambers on the opening day of this facility. Dr Jacobs said that it might be confronting for some people to see the animals in this situation and that the centre did not want to attract "unnecessary" attention from animal welfare bodies.

The fact that the dairy industry is a) doing something that they suspect will upset people and b) wants to keep it hidden should be great cause for concern for the public. But this is far from the first time that the dairy industry has been involved in practices that would concern the public.

In fact, central to the dairy industry's business model is something they'd rather milk drinkers didn’t know, or rather -- someone. This someone is the young calf who is born to keep his mother producing milk. Each year, roughly one million unwanted calves are separated from their mothers and sent to slaughter as 'waste products' in their first week of life -- all so that their mothers' milk can be bottled for human consumption.

When exposed to the truth of what happens to these calves, people are understandably shocked and more and more caring people are looking to make kinder choices for calves.

Fortunately, there are many ways to get milk without any animal suffering whatsoever. Coconut, almond and soy are just some of the plant-based milk varieties that are widely available on supermarket shelves. What's more, plants don't need nappies, many are resilient to temperature changes and they don't need to be continuously impregnated to produce milk. (Someone ought to tell the dairy industry.) These 5 mothers all want the same thing this Mother's Day:

One study found that the strong bond between mother and calf was formed in as little as five minutes.

In a natural setting, cows will drink from their mother for several months, up to a year.

Mother cows have been reported to bellow and call out for their calves if they're separated.

But she won't get to.

To produce milk for humans, a dairy cow must keep giving birth to calves, usually every year. Her calves are normally taken away in the first 24 hours of their life, so that the milk she is producing to feed her newborn can be bottled for human consumption.


This video shows a calf being separated from his mother on the first day of his life. It's clearly distressing for her, it's distressing for him and it may be distressing for you to watch so please give it a miss if you feel you don't need to watch it.

There are more than 1 million cows in the Australian dairy industry today -- every single one is a mother. If they could have one thing this Mother's Day, I can guess what it would be ...

As long as the demand for dairy milk continues, mother cows and calves will continue to suffer as a result. The most powerful thing you can do to help dairy cows is to make the switch to dairy-free milk. Do something nice for the mother of another this Sunday 10 May and try a dairy-free alternative. There are so many delicious dairy-free options these days it's never been easier.

It’s not always easy being the only GWS Giants fan in all of Melbourne, but I feel sorrier for Essendon supporters at the moment. The team’s been fined $2 million, dropped out of the finals and their coach is suspended for 12 months. Why? The team’s former sports scientist, Stephen Dank, was mixing all kinds of stuff in the players’ supplement injections, not all of which was entirely legal.

When I looked into it, some of the ingredients in Essendon’s ‘enhancement’ cocktail gave me the heebie-jeebies. And I’m not the only one. Tim Watson, father of Essendon’s Jobe Watson, likened the bizarre supplements to "witch doctor stuff." Here’s just a few of the things that were being used to try and improve player’s performance:

Pig’s brain extract:

Known as cerebrolysin in the medical world, pig’s brain extract has been said to help treat Alzheimer’s, but it is not approved for human use. Dank said he injected players with the extract in order to increase alertness.

Now, I’m no expert, but I did have a Grandpa who suffered from short-term memory loss and just in case any sports scientists stumble across this blog I’d like to share his top tips for keeping his wits about him:

  • A swim first thing in the morning. Nothing like freezing cold water to make you more alert.
  • An apple second thing in the morning. (An apple a day keeps the witch doctor away.)
  • Gingko biloba – native Chinese plant used to enhance memory. Grandad swore by it.
  • Crossword puzzles.
  • 30 minutes of skipping every day. (This might have been more to do with fitness but he certainly never forgot where he kept the skipping rope.)
  • Chess.
  • Ginseng – Asian herb used to increase mental capacity.
  • Eucalyptus oil. (This was mainly used as a solution to every other ailment but one whiff of that stuff and you’re WIDE awake, trust me.)

All of these tips for staying alert are approved for human use. And none of them involve any animal fluids. Guess I should just sit back and wait for the job offers from AFL teams to come rolling in ...

Bovine Colostrum:

Colostrum is the first milk a mother cow produces after her calf is born. It is very high in antibodies and protein. Why? To make superior AFL players of course! Oh wait ... sorry ... it’s actually to nourish the baby calf and help him grow big and strong. Unfortunately, in order for big burly AFL players to have this milk for babies', the calves have to go without. And sadly, calves lose much more than just their milk in the dairy industry.

Calf’s blood:

There is some “flimsy evidence” that calf’s blood can help speed up recovery time for injured players. However, Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid (who described the club’s supplement practices as “ludicrous”) has said that “the recent opinion is that platelets and one’s own blood, probably does a better job.” This is not surprising since (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again) humans are not cows.

Unfortunately I do not have any suggestions for how to heal more quickly than the average human but this guy might know --> (Or maybe the secret is here.)

The worst thing about all of this is that not only have the Bombers been embroiled in a scandal -- and with devastating consequences -- but animals have been caught up in it too. Clearly, humans have recognised that animals have some pretty neat talents. But rather than admire these strengths, we’ve tried to take them for ourselves.

Did they start cutting open pig’s brains when they discovered they are very intelligent animals – smarter than 3 year old children? Did people start experimenting with calf’s blood when they learned that newborn calves have the strength to stand up within minutes of being born, something that takes human babies months to achieve?

The bottom line is that animals are being used to try to enhance the lives of humans but little thought is given to the needs and lives of the animals themselves. :( What ever happened to fair play?

Dairy is a bit of a hot topic lately. Did you hear that Dave Hughes has taken up a milk free challenge? “Milk is for baby cows,” Hughesy said. (Click here to send him a message of support.)

What's more, just recently health experts declared that there is no nutritional need for humans to drink cow’s milk. Which makes sense since after all, I’m not a calf. Are you?

I’ve known for a long time that I wasn’t a cow but I’m so pleased that doctors are finally figuring it out too. So I’m celebrating in the best way possible -- by eating LOADS of dairy-free chocolate. (Skip to the bottom of this blog to find out how you can get your hands on some too.)

Harvard professor Dr Ludwig has said that you can get more calcium from kale than you can from cow’s milk. That means one bowl of this kale and avo salad and you’ll have calcium coming out your ears! But if you’re like me and the thought of eating kale makes your face do this, --> don’t fret because you can also get calcium from nuts, seeds, beans and green leafy vegetables, including my personal fave: broccoli (Check out what else the experts are saying about dairy by clicking here). (That’s not really me in the picture by the way. Although I did have that fringe in primary school.)

The best part about getting calcium from plant sources is that there are no casualties. A lot of Aussies don’t realise that over 700,000 dairy calves (called bobby calves) are killed as ‘waste’ every year.

Thankfully it’s easy to save the lives of dairy calves. Simply give dairy the flick. There are so many great dairy-free alternatives out there these days! Have you been to the milk aisle in your local supermarket lately? Soy milk, oat milk, rice milk, almond milk ... it’s a dairy-free smorgasbord.

And what’s the most delicious use of cruelty-free milk? Cruelty-free chocolate! So let’s get on with it, shall we?

Hughesy is giving up cow’s milk! This morning he said he’d have a go at giving up dairy for the calves, saying “I do believe that milk is for baby cows.” Hugsy did this face:

Why is Hugsy so excited about this news? Well, what happens to calves in the dairy industry is pretty grim. To produce milk, cows need to have a calf. And like most mums, cows form very strong bonds with their babies. Yet, most calves born into the dairy industry are separated from their mums within days of their birth, and what happens to them next is something the dairy industry doesn't want you to know:

The good news is that it is so easy to eat dairy-free these days. And health experts are starting to realise that cow’s milk might not even be all that good for us. If you’ve been thinking about going dairy-free, why not “chuck a Hughesy” and try it out? You might feel better for it and you’ll be saving lives!

When I was little we were only allowed milk or water with dinner. (No Nesquik or anything! Tough times, right?) That’s because my mum wanted us to be healthy and strong and the word was that milk is the best thing for calcium.

But the word seems to be changing. In the last few weeks, doctors and nutritionists have started speaking up and saying ‘you know, maybe milk isn’t the best way to get calcium.’ Dr David Ludwig got the ball rolling when he said that humans have no nutritional need for animal’s milk. Then more health experts had their say. And this is what they said:

Humans are not cows:

At least 75% of people are lactose intolerant. Put simply, this is because humans are not cows and we don’t have the digestive system of calves. Naturopath Hayley Stockbridge says, "it makes no sense that we’d be the only animal to drink the milk of another animal and then expect it to be digested properly."

Nuts, seeds and leafy greens will do the job:

Almonds, broccoli, bok choy, calcium-fortified soy milk, chick peas, dried fruits, firm tofu = calcium, calcium, calcium. In fact, Osteoporosis Australia says firm tofu is the food with the highest calcium content. And it goes great in a stir-fry with your broccoli and bok choy. You can call it the high-calci-yum stir-fry.

Dairy might be making us sick:

A number of studies have found that the growth of cancer cells may have a direct link to casein - the protein found in cow’s milk. Also, the countries with the greatest dairy intake (Australia, the US and the UK) are the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis.

Milk increases the chances of a bunch of nasty stuff:

Melvyn Korman, Director of Gastroenterology and a Professor of Medicine at the Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, (aka the guy with the longest professional title ever), says he avoids milk to keep his cholesterol down. Many dairy products are high in saturated fat, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Dairy consumption has also been linked to an increased risk in ovarian cancer for women and prostate cancer for men.

Milk is mucus-y:

I’m going to go light on the detail here but many people get mucus from drinking milk. Mucus can cause respiratory problems digestive problems and skin problems. What's more, I've never heard anyone comment on someone’s 'sexy mucus voice.'

It’s just a little bit weird:

UK food publisher Michelle Berriedale-Johnson says, "humans are the only mammalian species which not only continues to drink milk after it is weaned, but, from birth, drinks the milk of other mammals." P!nk thinks it’s weird too.

And finally,

Dairy-free is kindness-full:

In Australia over 700,000 baby animals are killed each year as "waste products" of the dairy industry. These calves were born just to keep their mothers producing milk and sadly, they are slaughtered within a week of their birth. These are the calves who the dairy industry doesn’t want you to know about.

The good news is, there are so many awesome alternatives to dairy. There are more than 70 different varieties of dairy-free milk available at supermarkets these days. This one simple (non-gory) image will change the way you think about animals who are born to be slaughtered in Australia. Prepare to have your mind blown.

Nearly every animal in Australia born to be eaten or have their eggs or milk taken, will not live their full natural life. This chart shows to scale how much of their life they experience before they are killed to be eaten, or because they are no longer 'productive' enough to be kept.

An Unnatural Life Span

To give it some perspective: the average life expectancy for an Australian is almost 82 years. If you were a 'dairy cow', it would mean you shouldn't bother planning your 21st b'day. If you were a veal calf, you wouldn't even reach 2 years old.

That's a really grim way to look at it - but the sad truth is that most animals in Australia are killed as babies.

There are some lucky ones, though. They find their way to sanctuaries, rescue shelters and into the care of kind individuals and families. Pigs like Hope who ended up at Edgar's Mission, and calves like Esther at Brightside Farm Sanctuary.

Hope & Esther

You don't have to rescue a pig and have her live in your backyard to be a lifesaver for these animals. All you have to do is decide not to eat them. It's such a simple change in your life, but it will make the world of difference to animals you no longer eat. Take the pledge to be veg, now!

Two mums in NZ proved recently just how far they were willing to go to protect their babies, pushing and even biting a man that threatened them. Oh, did I mention that these mums were cows?? Find out more...

To summarise: a farmer tried to separate calves from their mums ... but the mums fought back to protect their babies! It's a good thing those cows didn't know "MOO Thai"!! Man, I love puns.

Like most mums, cows form very strong bonds with their young. One study suggested that this bond is formed within 5 minutes of giving birth! After birth the mum licks her calf all over, in a process that helps her learn the sight and smell of her baby. If they are separated, the mum will bellow frantically, and the calves appear frightened and confused.

Unfortunately, the separation of mum and baby happens on dairy farms all the time. See what happens right here in Australia for yourself. WARNING: this isn't easy to watch.

A TV show in England recently caused an uproar by showing the horrible truth, too - right during prime-time.

In Australia every year, over 700,000 bobby calves are killed as "waste products" of the dairy industry. Some are shot, but the majority are taken from their mothers and put onto trucks with other calves, bound for the slaughterhouse. There they will be killed ... after being alive for less than a week. That's the secret the dairy industry would rather you didn't know.

If you want to take action for bobby calves and their grieving mums - it's easy. You can simply ditch dairy. Delicious alternatives are in supermarkets and delis everywhere - milks, chocolates, yoghurts and icecreams. Have fun exploring and finding your fave!

Herbie the bull is living what I would say is my dream life. He gets to run around outside on the grass all day ... and play with a ball. If you thought dogs were the only animals that loved playing with toys, then check out the love affair Herbie is having with his new ball!

Just like cats and dogs, cows have their own individual personalities. Rosamund Young (author of The Secret Lives of Cows), points out that cows "can be highly intelligent, moderately so, or slow to understand; friendly, considerate, aggressive, docile, inventive, dull, proud, or shy." They form friendships with other cows, and mother cows form strong bonds with their calves.

But what you may not know is that dairy cows live a life far different to what you might remember from your picture books. Like all mammals (including humans!) cows will only produce milk after they have been pregnant - the milk obviously being meant for their babies. But newborn calves are taken from their mums less than a day after birth. And the milk intended for them makes its way into cartons and then the supermarket fridge.

You may be wondering, "Where do the calves go? Do they get a ball like Herbie?" As much as that would make my day, the reality couldn't be any more different. After separation, the mother and the calf will cry out for each other for days but their chances of a reunion are next to none. Most calves will be killed as a "waste-product" of the dairy industry at just 5 days old. This includes all male calves because they can't produce milk, and any young females not needed to restock the herd of milking cows. Every year in Australia, 700,000 calves are killed like this as part of the system that puts milk and cheese on supermarket shelves.

Not a "feel-good" kinda story is it? The good news for you and for cows though, is that there are alternatives to dairy available in supermarkets and delis across Australia. So Good ice-cream, Tofutti Cuties, oat milk, and Notzarella cheese are all items you can sub into the fridge to replace dairy products. And those are just my faves. Not only do they taste good, they also help save cows and their calves from suffering. That's win-win for everyone!

But we couldn't wait that long... We're getting into the spirit of Easter early and are giving away a delicious cruelty-free Easter pack to one Unleashed member now. You know the dairy industry is on the defensive when they stop trying to sing the praises of their product and just scrape the bottom of the barrel for reasons not to drink dairy-free milk (like soy, oat or almond milk).

Check out this ad from the American dairy industry -- it's pretty funny in its desperation to sell milk.

But the dairy industry will never feel the desperation of Bobby, a male calf born to keep his mother producing milk, while he is discarded as a 'waste product' of milk production.

So I'd rather shake and save lives than drink milk stolen from a doomed baby cow, and seriously I've never had to shake my milk that much anyway! Have you?

I've met lots of smart people. At least, they are smarter than me! But it's amazing how even among some of the smartest people I know there are some really basic things that seem to slip through the cracks.

Like, here's where most people think milk comes from:

1) The fridge
2) The supermarket
3) Magical fairy cows that automatically lactate for our convenience
4) All of the above (this was me)

I think these options pretty much sum up the images that you see in ads for cows' milk. Well, next week Animals Australia is going to do some advertising of their own, only this time, they're letting people in on a little secret -- the dark side to dairy that they *won't* tell you about in their ads. Unleashed Note: A little while ago, 4_da_animals1 posted a thread to the forum describing her experiences doing part time work at a small dairy farm. Most of us already know that male calves (who obviously can't produce milk) are killed as a waste product of the industry. But we were intrigued and disturbed to hear about her day to day encounters, so we asked her to write a guest blog. 

With all the dairy chocolate gobbled up at Easter, we thought this would be the perfect time to share her story:

Having recently turned vegetarian, I can now tell you one way to guarantee to become vegan is to work on a dairy farm.

Needing a job for the summer holidays, I was skimming through the country paper and saw an ad for a job on a dairy farm. Mum had been breathing down my neck to get a job; nothing much else was on offer; and to be honest I was curious to see how dairies treat their animals first hand, so I rang the manager to see if the spot had been taken. It hadn't.

I would be in charge of feeding gorgeous baby calves for a few hours a couple of times a week, and being paid for it. What could go wrong? Turns out being a calf feeder is not all I thought it would be. I had heard stories about the dairy industry being cruel - male calves taken from their mothers and trucked off to slaughter every week - but nothing really hits you in the heart more than seeing the kinds of day to day cruelty these poor creatures go through firsthand.

With images of gorgeous happy calves skipping up to me for a feed, I headed down to the farm with a smile on my face, and high expectations. These expectations, however, were crushed within a few mere hours.

The first thing I clearly remember from stepping outside the car was the smell. The smell of mass amounts of faeces. In front of me were hundreds of cows packed in a small iron pen, one by one being pushed through these huge machines with tubes being attached to their udders - a person behind them, making loud noises and hitting their behinds with a rubber tube, to push them forward.

I was told to throw some rubber boots on, and get in with the cows. The lady pushing the cows forward would be in charge of me, to teach me what to do. As I headed towards her, all I could see were piles and piles of faeces in the pen - so large  that I would get stuck in it. The cows were forced to move through the sludge, which the workers called "mud" to get onto the concrete in front of the milkers. Some cows would trip and fall into the "mud" face first. Some cow's behinds were covered in sores and dried "mud", others were limping, but all were forced further and further forward to be finished by break time.

The one thing I will never get out of my head is the sadness in those cow's eyes. With hung heads, you could tell they could feel every hit, and if you tried to approach them, they would run off, with genuine fear in their eyes of you, the two legged being with a big stick.

Once a cow had given birth, a worker would take the baby away from the mother, and shove him into a tiny trailer attached to the back of the quad bike, awaiting a calf feeder to take him down with the others. Some calves were stuck in that cage for up to 12 hours.

The calves were placed 5 or 6 to a pen. To move a calf into a different pen, they were picked up and thrown over the fence, then left to gather their own feet. Standing in front of the calves' pens for the first time, I looked to my left and was faced with a pile of dead calves covered in flies being thrown on the back of the quad to be taken to the "death pit". In front of me, in the pens, were cute wobbly calves, covered in all different shades of faeces - from other sick calves and calves with the equivalent of diarrhea, which is lethal to a baby calf if not treated within days of getting sick.

It's a calf feeder's responsibility to separate the sick calves from the healthy, and tell the manager when more medicine needs to be ordered. If the manager isn't told, it doesn't happen, and the calves suffer and die as a result. This happened frequently, as the majority of workers just didn't care. They were simply there to get their hours.

Deprived of a mother to drink milk from at a leisurely pace, calves have two opportunities to drink milk per day, having to consume 2 litres of milk on both occasions. If a calf refused to feed from the plastic feeders on the fence, they had a tube shoved down their throat and were forced to feed, with a quiet moan escaping them as the tube slid in. As you make sure each calf consumes its 2 litres, you cannot escape the overwhelming wails of the mother cows that have just had their babies taken from them.

Every single male bobby calf, and any female that was born with a male as twins gets sent to slaughter. The female twins are included, as they have a higher rate of future miscarriage. Miscarriage means no baby, which means no production of milk. Every five days, the truck comes to take the bobby calves to slaughter and their miserable life comes to an end.

Needless to say, I didn't last long working there. And my time there has triggered my decision to go vegan. I do not know of many people who would agree to this treatment of such kindhearted creatures. This was a small country dairy, I could not possibly imagine the kinds of things big companies get away with.

I'm glad I can now give people a first hand account of how animals are treated on dairy farms. And I'll be taking every opportunity I can to inform others! We, as consumers need to show through what we choose to eat and buy that we do not agree with ill-treatment of other living creatures!

It's almost that time again - Chocolate time! Oh, I mean Easter time, yup Easter! But really, chocolate is aaall I can think about this time of year. And since ditching dairy, I've discovered so many delicious and delightful chocolates that I am certainly spoilt for choice!

I know you're dying to hear about them, so without further ado:

In the week since Animals Australia's nationwide ad campaign hit major newspapers, the media has been buzzing with stories exposing the truth about the forgotten casualties of the dairy industry: bobby calves.

Now The 7PM Project is jumping on the bandwagon too! This will be some of the biggest exposure bobby calves have ever had in Australia - making it a show not to be missed. So tune into the program tonight (2nd Feb) - on Channel 10, at ... hang on I just have to check what time it starts ... ;)

Most people would be outraged to know that 700,000 baby calves are sent to slaughter each year as a routine part of the dairy industry. And they have a right to know! So get all your family and friends to watch too!

Most people wouldn't stop to ask, as they pour milk into their morning coffee, what went into producing that milk. But this morning, as people take a sip and open today's paper, they'll find out, because of this campaign ad.

It'll come as a shock to most Aussies to learn that every year in Australia over 700,000 calves are killed as 'waste products' of the dairy industry. What may come as even more of a shock is that the dairy industry is now pushing for legislation that would allow calves to be starved of feed for the last 30 hours of their lives, before being killed at the slaughterhouse!

This proposed new standard is under 'public consultation' at the moment. Did you know you were being consulted? No? Neither do most people, because the government and industry conveniently neglected to let the public know!

But just because they don't want to tell the public the truth, doesn't mean we can't do that for them! After all, people have a right to know what they are buying into if they drink dairy.

So today Animals Australia is running the above ad in major newspapers across the country. Make sure you grab a copy of one of these papers and show the ad to all your family and friends:

Pretty bad, right? Can you believe the dairy industry is now quietly trying to make it perfectly legal to deny a bobby calf any feed for 30 hours before he is killed. Even criminals on death row get a last meal!

Outraged? Good! If you want to stop this awful cruelty, then the most important choice you can make is to go dairy-free! It's simple, healthy and as an added bonus, good for the planet! To make things even easier, we've already prepared a dairy-free shopping list for you!

Wow! There was some great news for animals coming out of the US last week. I just wish I could say the same for Australia :(

Last Monday (12 October) Michigan passed a bill that will see the phase out some of the cruelest confinement methods used in the farming industry.

 Within 3 years, dairy calves in Michigan will no longer be confined in tiny veal crates and starved of iron to make their flesh pale and soft. Battery cages , used to confine egg-laying hens, and gestation crates used to confine mother pigs, will also be phased out. With these significant improvements for animals Michigan has become the 7th state to ban gestation crates, the 5th to ban veal crates and the 2nd to ban battery cages.

And the good news just keeps coming! California - who have already banned veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages have added to their list of no-nos tail docking of dairy cows. A good sign from one of the US's largest dairy states, and very good news for the 1.8million dairy cows in California!

While we're on the topic of changes for animals, the city council of Santa Monica (also in California) has voted in favour of drafting new legislation that will restrict animal 'declawing' ie. the practice of painfully removing animals claws.

Meanwhile, over the other side of the world in a little place often known as 'the lucky country', farm animals aren't so lucky. Recently The Greens in ACT (and Tas for that matter) put forward a Bill that would ban battery cages from ACT (meaning only one business would be affected) and the Liberals and Labour teamed up to shoot it down (same story in Tasmania).  With the many other parts of the world making huge advances for animals, it is disappointing that Australia is still dragging its feet.    

Well, the Aussie government may be stuck in the dark ages, but the good news is none of us need to be.
