This little pig can do every dog trick you can think of

This little pig can do every dog trick you can think of

Little Stefa, who lives in Poland, proves that pigs are every bit as smart as dogs. She can do all the tricks her dog friends can do with just as much skill and personality :)

She can jump through hoops

She can turn perfect circles

She can weave between her carer's legs

She can shake hands

She can leap over appropriate piglet sized hurdles

She can balance really well on these tricky wobbly things

She can balance on toes

She can do these adorable little piggy jumps on a ball

And she can hold a perfect pose in perfect lighting

Stefa wins my Best in Show award hands down :) It's no secret that pigs are incredibly smart and Stefa is a beautiful reminder of that. Knowing how smart they are makes it even harder to stomach the thought of millions of pigs suffering in concrete pens in factory farms, constantly being bred only to be slaughtered.

While watching little Stefa perfectly nail a series of dog tricks, I can't help but think about one of the biggest injustices in the way animals are treated -- if a dog was ever treated the way most pigs in Australia are there would be a riot. (Not to mention it would be illegal).

Only recently there was massive outrage about the Yulin dog eating festival in China. And among the outraged was myself! It's horrible to think of dogs being killed and eaten.

But I have to wonder, would anyone bat an eyelid at a hot dog eating festival right here in Australia? I would like to think that people would be outraged -- especially if they could see how they're treated. It's horrible to think of pigs being killed and eaten.

I often hear Aussies say that we need to fix the problems we have here at home before we start worrying about what's happening elsewhere in the world. I wouldn't say that I necessarily agree (I think we can achieve both) but I do know that the power to protect animals from cruelty here in Australia is entirely in our hands. While we couldn't save the animals who were killed as part of the Yulin dog eating festival, we can save the animals who are being slaughtered for their meat every single day in Australia.

It's as simple as choosing to value animals like Stefa the pig for who they are and taking them off your plate. And we've got meat-free recipes and handy tips to get you started.

Stefa is a very lucky girl to be valued for who she is. Watch more of her incredible talents in this adorable video:

P.S. Though Stefa is adorable, pigs only make good pets for individuals who are well-researched and know what they're getting into. There are some big, big problems with the "teacup" or mini pig phenomenon, which you can read about here. And as always, if you're thinking about adding a new animal member to your family, adoption is the kindest option :)

Amazing bond between girl and fawn (video)

Amazing bond between girl and fawn (video)

When this tiny fawn stumbled into Maya's yard, the connection between girl and deer was instantaneous. But Maya knows straight away what the fawn needs most ... their mother.

Maya's dad, who uploaded the video, said they later saw the fawn and mother together in their backyard, safely reunited :) If only all humans were like Maya ... and knew that what baby animals need most is to be with their mothers.

Sadly, there are too many examples in the real world where we deprive animals of this ... young orcas are taken from their mothers to perform at marine parks, day old calves are taken from their mothers so that their milk can be bottled for humans, and baby harp seals are hunted and killed for their fur while their mothers are out finding food.

Maya can teach us a lot about how we should interact with animals in the wild ... to truly show our love for animals we should let them live out their lives in their natural environment with their own families and species.

Have you ever had an awesome interaction with an animal in the wild?

This little lamb looks like she loves a game of hide and seek (even though she needs lots of clues from 'Bea' :P)

Haha! She finally found Bea. Never give up little lamby :)

Did you know that sheep are known for their playfulness? They can also learn and respond to their name, just like dogs. Click here to find out everything you never knew about sheep.

This little girl loves her cow so much she sneaks her into the house for a cuddle sesh and it is SO CUTE! Watch ...

I was desperately wanting to cuddle a cow after I watched this, were you? I had to make do with our office dogs Blue and Oscar. (They are excellent cuddlers.)

Not all of us are as lucky as the girl in the video and get to spend quality time with cows. But it's pretty clear that they can be just as affectionate and loving as the animals that we do share our home (or office) with, wouldn't you say?

If you reckon cows deserve to be treated with kindness there's something you can do today that will make a huge difference for them -- and all animals. By taking animals off your plate you'll be sparing the lives of around 100 animals per year! (Not to mention helping the environment as well). Like the mum in the video seems to realise, these gentle creatures deserve much more than to be killed for their meat.

Make the pledge to go veg today or click here to find out everything you never knew about cows.

5 stories that prove adoption isn't just for humans

5 stories that prove adoption isn't just for humans

Did you know that humans aren't the only ones who adopt? Animals do too. And what's more, sometimes they look after babies that aren't even the same species as they are :) Here's 5 of my personal favourite interspecies adoption stories:

Cat adopts ducklings

Shortly after giving birth to three of her own kittens, Della cuddled up to three orphaned ducklings like they were her own :) (Can you see the little kittens curled up under the fluffy ducklings? So cute!)

Source: BBC

Sperm whales adopt deformed dolphin

A bottlenose dolphin born with a spinal deformity was seen nuzzling against a family of large sperm whales in the North Atlantic. Researchers were surprised to see that the young dolphin seemed to have been accepted into the pod.

Lioness adopts baby antelope

Now this one is really bizarre -- a lioness in Kenya, named Kamunyak, took in a baby oryx and protected her from other predators for as long as she could. Experts were dumbfounded as to why Kamunyak had decided to adopt the calf but said she treated the baby as if she were her own cub.

Dog adopts chicks

These ten tiny chicks wandered into Bailey's yard one day and found themselves a brand new mumma. (Sadly their birth mother was nowhere to be found.)

Human adopts dog

This is my colleague Lisa and her rescue dog Nellie. Lisa adopted this special munchkin a little over a year ago. Nellie lived the first five years of her life in a puppy factory, kept purely to breed pups :( But don't worry, she's catching up on her love quota from Lisa and all of us here in the office :) (I even helped her make her own Instagram page so she can share her adventure stories.)

Have you got an amazing animal adoption story of your own? Do you know of a guinea pig who adopted a bear cub? (That's something I'd like to see!)

Maybe you've been a hero and adopted an animal from a shelter yourself? Giving an animal in need a loving home is one of the kindest things you can do.

Share your animal adoption story in the comments below. Can't wait to hear it :)

Are you still pumped from the GREAT news that Japan's whaling in the Southern Ocean has FINALLY been banned? (In case you missed it, the full story is here.) We have been buzzing here at Unleashed and this video of a mother whale and her baby was the icing on the cake. These lucky tourists got an incredible up close demonstration of how curious and friendly whales can be ... when they don't have harpoons pointed at them:

It's not often we get such a remarkable and up close look at life under the sea. Click here for 10 more things that might surprise you about the big blue.

OMG. Picking a winner for the Give A Stuff competition was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Because in truth, everyone who entered this comp is a winner for having such wonderful, compassionate people in your lives.

I absolutely loved hearing your stories but in the end there is only one prize to giveaway and this lovely entry by the The Kind Cook has taken the vegan cake (so to speak):

Congratulations to The Kind Cook! You and your 4 year old son will be receiving two new Give A Stuff family members :).

However, there were SO many beautiful entries (click here to read them all) so here are a few special mentions:

  • Iaserrenagade78's friend Stef, who attends all the Ban Live Export rallies and looks after abandoned cats.
  • Meli's friend Emily who has set up an elephant sanctuary in Thailand! (Wow!)
  • Vegan91's mum who is making cruelty-free choices and has rescued battery hens and given them a happy home, AND
  • BreeOD's 'brother' Max the seeing eye-dog who wasn't cut out for the job, but was luckily adopted by BreeOD's family :)

I couldn’t have said it better than RebeccaC did in her comment - it's so powerful to have an ally to stand alongside you when it comes to making a difference for animals. So everyone is #winning in my books :)

If you'd still like to get a Give a Stuff animal for your loved one, you can! Click here to order from their website. Otherwise, we'll have some more free stuff to giveaway VERY soon so stay tuned!

Imagine if you'd never seen Christmas...

Imagine if you'd never seen Christmas...

Tags: Christmas, cute, video

Can you believe there’s only one month til Christmas? What is your favourite thing about the holiday season? This beautiful video brought a little tear to my eye as it reminded me of my absolute favourite thing about Christmas time. See if you can guess what it is:

If you guessed alarm clocks, you would be incorrect. The thing I love most about this time of year is getting to spend it with loved ones. My mum wakes us all up with carols and my brother and sisters and I will play card games and eat delicious food until we can’t move.

But it’s also the time of year when I think about all the animals that won’t get to enjoy the simple thing I often take for granted – love. Millions of pigs and chickens will spend Christmas in factory farms, devoid of any kindness. Countless cats and dogs will sleep in shelters, as there is no loving home for them to go to.

There is a way, though, that you (and your loved ones) can help create a world where all animals feel love, just like the bear in the video – by starting an online gift registry and encouraging your friends and family to make a gift this year that will help make a difference for animals.

Einstein gets a life jacket :)

Einstein gets a life jacket :)

Have you ever had a sick pet? It can be utterly heartbreaking. Leighton Naylor was devastated when his goldfish Einstein got an illness that affected his swim bladder, making it impossible for him to swim anymore. He would just sink to the bottom, stuck on his side.

“He just looked depressed,” says Naylor. “I thought I’m going to have to do something about this.”

So he used some recycled tubing to make a flotation device just for little Einstein. Now... well, just look at him:

The best thing about this story is that every animal deserves kindness, no matter how small or scaly or different from us they might be. And Einstein was lucky enough to get just that :)

I know that, like Naylor, you’ve been going out of your way to help animals. So what’s something kind you’ve done to make a difference for animals? Pop your story in the comments below.

“Happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we give.” -- Ben Carson

I’m so excited to tell you about our latest giveaway! It’s possibly the cutest, cuddliest prize that we’ve given away yet. And even better, we’re giving away TWO! Meet the Give A Stuff family:

The best thing about Give A Stuff stuffies is that for every one you adopt, a donation goes to an Australian animal sanctuary. So a little furry munchkin gets a safe and happy home with you, AND you help provide safe and happy homes to animals who might have nowhere to go if it weren’t for these sanctuaries. :) Click here to read about the awesome organisations Give A Stuff supports.

So, because it feels so good to give, we’re giving you the opportunity to give one of these gorgeous stuffed animals to someone you know who gives a stuff about animals. AND we’ll throw in one for you as well. :) TWIN STUFFIES!

Just like you, animals form strong bonds with friends and family members. Sheep, for example, are friendly, social and make great companions.

All you have to do to enter is let us know in the comments below about someone you know who deserves this gift and why. Entries must be less than 150 words and competition closes 1 December 2013.

Good luck!

Psst! Can’t wait that long to get your arms around a Give A Stuff animal? You can purchase your new furry friend here.

Compassionate 3-year-old becomes YouTube star

Compassionate 3-year-old becomes YouTube star

Tags: go veg, vegetarian, video, cute

Luiz is only three years old but he has made up his mind that he is not going to eat anything (or rather, anyone) with a head. In the last couple of days, he's become an internet sensation, with over a million views on YouTube.

There comes a time in every child's life when they realise that meat used to be an animal. I remember the day my little sister realised that 'pig' and 'pork' were one and the same. She put down her fork and cried. I'm embarrassed to say that at the time I laughed at her and told her to eat her chops.

Now, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that she should have this reaction and I wish I could go back in time, give her a cuddle and make her a veggie burger. But at that age I had already learned to accept what society says is 'normal' and 'ok'.

Children don't just accept. Children ask questions. A lot of questions. All the time. The questions Luiz asks his mum are questions that I wish I'd asked earlier. It was only years later, that I realised, like Luiz, I wanted animals to 'stay standing up'.

When did you first make the connection between meat and the animals it came from? How did you react?

Why it's important to watch cartoons

Why it's important to watch cartoons

Posted 27 May 2013   by Amy         Permalink | 1 Comment

Tags: vegetarian, go veg, video, cute, pigs, monkeys

Ok, so maybe I am getting a little bit too old for cartoons, but you have to admit that there is nothing better than an episode of Scooby Doo with your cornflakes on a Saturday morning. And the little kid in me absolutely LOVED this episode of Arthur:

How cute is Sue Ellen's new bestie Sally? You know, Sue Ellen and I have something in common – almost four years ago I made a new friend called Joey. He lives in a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall, England. (Luckily he is very hairy because it gets FREEZING there!)

250-joey.jpgFor 9 years, Joey had been kept as a pet in a cage, which was MUCH too small for a monkey, and he had become physically disabled as a result. Luckily the sanctuary rescued him and he now has plenty of space and other monkey friends. When Joey looked at me, poked his tongue out and threw an apple at my face, I knew that I could never eat animals again!

200-lisa-lamb.jpgSue Ellen and I are not the only ones who have made a friendship with an animal that has changed us for good. Lisa Simpson beat us to it when she became vegetarian in 1995 after bonding with a lamb. That means Lisa has been vegetarian for over 17 years! Strangely enough, she hasn't aged a day. Could this be the consequences of living meat-free?

By deciding not to eat animals, Sue Ellen is going to save up to 100 cartoon lives per season! And Lisa has saved thousands and thousands of cartoon sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and fish. If you want to save real animals you can make the pledge to be veg! Start with my personal wintery favourite – minestrone soup!

And while you are warming up with a bowl of delicious cruelty-free goodness, why not tell us about your special animal friend in the comments below?

In so many ways, the animals have it worked out. Whilst we humans appear to have mastered technology, no matter how hard we try, we'll simply never be able to run faster, travel further, or hide better than nature's own team of superpowered critters. But all's not lost. I like to think there are some things that we can still learn from our furry friends.

Like ... how to get along... :-)

Happy Friday!!
