No seaweed salads here! Not a kale and quinoa patty to be seen. (Not that I don't love those too!) These 5 mind-blowing recipes will change how you see vegan food and prove that there ain't no thang that can't be made deliciously cruelty-free :) (Click on the pics for recipes.)

[PLUS: Win a cookbook from Bed and Broccoli! See bottom of this blog for how to enter.]

Crème brûlée
I had to start with this one because holy moley. Vegan crème brûlée -- who knew?

Caesar salad with poached 'egg' and hollandaise
Poached eggs? And again ...

Tofish and chips
Yesssss.

Caramellos
Zomg. Yum.

Carrot caviar
This made me chuckle a little. Well played vegetables.

taylor-swift-mind-blown.gif

All of these recipes are completely free from animal products. The proof is in the crème brûlée that not a single animal has to suffer for us to be able to make crazy good food. The choice to protect pigs, cows, chickens and fish from harm is in your hands. To find out more about the benefits of leaving animals off your plate please click here.

All of the food above was made by the amazing Nikki Medwell who runs a little sanctuary/bed and breakfast called Bed and Broccoli in rural Victoria. Aaand she's recently released a cookbook, which is also amazing. Along with more mind-blowing recipes, the book is full of beautiful pictures of the animals who share her home near Shepparton.

Nikki and friends :)

Thanks to Nikki and JoJo Publishing, I've got TWO Bed and Broccoli cookbooks to giveaway (worth $49.99 each) and I'm going to give them to two people who can make my brain explode with an amazing vegan recipe. Post a link to a recipe or photo of amazing vegan goodness in the comments below for your chance to win one of these -->

WIN THIS. And eat it. (So yum!)

WIN THIS. And eat it. (So yum!)

Tags: Suzy Spoons, vegetarian, vegan, go veg, cruelty-free, food win, competition, contest, giveaway

Suzy Spoon's Vegetarian Butcher is giving away a festive roast that is so delicious it will make your eyes water. Simply tell us why you're leaving animals off your plate this Christmas for your chance to win!

suzys-roast.jpg

This festive roast is the yummiest thing you will eat this Christmas. (And maybe ever!) I had one of Suzy Spoon's roast's for Christmas last year, and I swear I was defending my plate from green-eyed relatives the whole time. Jokes. Christmas is about sharing and my whole family tried this roast and LOVED it.

Of course the best thing about this mouth-watering roast is that no animals were killed to make it. It is completely cruelty-free. (I've put the ingredients list below.) Sadly, for millions of animals, Christmas is anything but a time of celebration. Most pigs and chickens in Australia will spend the 'holiday season' in factory farms, with no fancy feast and no love or kindness.

But by choosing to have a cruelty-free Christmas feast, you and your family can help spare animals from a life of sadness.

520-pig-chick.jpg

Leave a comment below saying why you're leaving animals off your plate this Christmas for your chance to win the festive roast from Suzy Spoon's Vegetarian Butcher. (Or if you'd prefer, you can order one right away by clicking here.)

COMP CONDITIONS:

Comp closes: Sunday 14 December. (Roast will be posted on the 17th.)

Roasts can be delivered to the following areas ONLY:

NSW: Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong, Northern Rivers, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Albury, Campbelltown, Windsor, Penrith, Berowra

QLD: Brisbane metro, Gold Coast

VIC: Melbourne metro, Wodonga

Roast ingredients: Tofu, gluten flour, onion, water, bread crumbs, mushrooms, plain flour, olive oil, dried cranberries, walnuts, soy sauce, yeast flakes, garlic, miso, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, salt, black pepper.

UPDATE 15/12/2014: This competition is now closed. Congratulations to our winner - Caterina from NSW with this entry:

Last Christmas was my first as a vegan, and this year the whole family is joining in. When we celebrate love, gratitude, family and life, we don't discriminate. What better way to live the values of Christmas, and indeed humanity, than by an active refusal to cooperate with injustice? That's why I choose a cruelty free Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who entered and to everyone celebrating a cruelty-free Christmas this year :)

Bird is the word. And thongs are the prize :)

Bird is the word. And thongs are the prize :)

Tags: birds, environment, rubbish, thongs, giveaway, contest, competition, win, malc&andi

Thong weather is here. And I could not be happier! If you're a lover of good thong weather - like me - you'll know the importance of a good pair of pluggers.

And we just so happen to have 4 pairs of malc&andi organic rubber thongs to giveaway!

Yep, you read that right. They're organic. AND they're biodegradable. Which means you could pretty much eat them if you wanted to. (But don't.)

This is great news because while you and I know that plastic isn't food (except for that one time I bit into a decoration apple), birds sometimes don't. And the plastic that we humans use can cause serious problems for birds, when it's not thrown away properly. Check this out:

This trailer is a good reminder of how the choices we make everyday are powerful. Something as simple as litter is having a massive impact on the lives of animals. So by making sure you chuck rubbish in the bin and by choosing biodegradable options you can ensure that you're helping to keep both animals and the environment safe.

So, to win yourself a super soft pair of biodegradable natural rubber thongs (in the colour of your choosing) I want to hear about one choice you've made to help protect animals from suffering. Pop it in the comments below and you could be one of 4 winners :)

Comp closes: Sunday 19th January. Winners can choose any pair from available stock.

520-thongs.jpg

P.S. malc&andi have an awesome range of hats, sunnies and accessories as well so you can be fully decked for summer in ethical goods. AND, you'll be happy to know that they donate 5% of all profits to animal charities, including us :) Check out the range here.

OMG. Picking a winner for the Give A Stuff competition was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Because in truth, everyone who entered this comp is a winner for having such wonderful, compassionate people in your lives.

I absolutely loved hearing your stories but in the end there is only one prize to giveaway and this lovely entry by the The Kind Cook has taken the vegan cake (so to speak):

kindcook.jpg

Congratulations to The Kind Cook! You and your 4 year old son will be receiving two new Give A Stuff family members :).

However, there were SO many beautiful entries (click here to read them all) so here are a few special mentions:

  • Iaserrenagade78's friend Stef, who attends all the Ban Live Export rallies and looks after abandoned cats.
  • Meli's friend Emily who has set up an elephant sanctuary in Thailand! (Wow!)
  • Vegan91's mum who is making cruelty-free choices and has rescued battery hens and given them a happy home, AND
  • BreeOD's 'brother' Max the seeing eye-dog who wasn't cut out for the job, but was luckily adopted by BreeOD's family :)

I couldn’t have said it better than RebeccaC did in her comment - it's so powerful to have an ally to stand alongside you when it comes to making a difference for animals. So everyone is #winning in my books :)

If you'd still like to get a Give a Stuff animal for your loved one, you can! Click here to order from their website. Otherwise, we'll have some more free stuff to giveaway VERY soon so stay tuned!

WIN 2 tix to see Blackfish!

WIN 2 tix to see Blackfish!

Posted 7 November 2013   by Amy         Permalink | 42 Comments

Tags: whales, orcas, SeaWorld, entertainment, Blackfish, win, competition, contest, giveaway

OMG. I saw Blackfish during the Melbourne International Film Festival and when Madman Films offered us some free tix to giveaway we jumped at the offer. Blackfish is a doco about a performing killer whale named Tilikum who lives in captivity in SeaWorld, Orlando. It is sooooo ... well it’s very sad but also GREAT that Tilikum’s story is being told. Check out the trailer here:

This movie is already having a massive impact in the U.S. A poll by CNN found that 86% of people said they wouldn’t go to SeaWorld after learning about the cruelty of keeping killer whales in captivity. Orcas are highly social and active animals and keeping them in small tanks (in Tilikum’s case) in isolation is unacceptable.

Loads of celebrities are also speaking out against marine parks including Ellen Page, Leona Lewis and Russell Brand. Blackfish also inspired Pixar to change the ending of Finding Dory (to be released next year)!

It’s so exciting that this film is coming to cinemas on November 21, so that Tilikum’s story can continue to reach people. And what’s even more exciting is that YOU get the chance to see it for FREE!*

There's 10 freebie tix all up so we’ll be giving 2 tickets to 1 winner from each of the following states/territories – NSW, QLD, SA, ACT and Vic. (Sorry if you live in WA, NT or Tas but no cinemas are showing Blackfish as yet :( Why not get in touch with your local cinema and let them know that you’d love them to screen it?)

300-blackfish.jpg

SO, here’s how to win: Comment below with the coolest fact you know about killer whales. The ones that make my eyes pop out the most will be the winners :) The competition closes on Sunday 17th November so DON’T MISS OUT!

*The movie is only screening in 5 states/territories so please check the full list of venues below to make sure there’s one near you before entering the comp.

Screenings:

ACT Dendy Canberra
NSW Chauvel Cinema
  Dendy Newtown
QLD Gold Coast Arts Centre
  Palace Barracks
SA Palace Nova Eastend
VIC Cinema Nova

WINNERS ANNOUNCED: Congratulations to the lucky winners of our Blackfish ticket giveaway!

Have you seen the film? What did you think

And the winner is ... bobby calves!

And the winner is ... bobby calves!

Posted 22 October 2013   by Amy         Permalink | 2 Comments

Tags: dairy, cows, bobby calves, milk, competition, contest, giveaway, win, winner, chocolate, dairy-free

250-chocbaby.jpg

Congratulations to the five winners of the 3 minute chocolate challenge. Your yummy prize packs are on their way. I know the sensible advice to give would be ‘don’t eat them all at once’ but in this case I would recommend eating them all as fast as you possibly can! And then acting like it never happened ... This kid knows what I’m talking about.

Why? Because since exposing the truth about bobby calves in the dairy industry, there’s a whole lotta people with a taste for dairy-free choccies. In fact, an awesome 96% of people who watched the 3 minute video picked the dairy-free option over cow’s milk. Which means the big winners in this are bobby calves! Every time you choose a dairy-free alternative, you are taking a stand against cruelty to the ‘unwanted’ calves of the dairy industry.

If you’ve been on the look-out for new dairy-free recipes, Whyveg.com has a bunch of my personal favourites – apple cinnamon muffins, raw chocolate SUPERFOODS brownie, and mac ‘n’ cheeze! Yep! All dairy-free :)

What’s more, if you missed out on a choccie prize pack this time around, you can get your hands on them ANYTIME you want in our online store. Try the chocolate coated cranberries. They’re new! And delicious.

And, because we just can’t get enough of giving stuff away for free, we’ve got a new comp up and running already! Click here to win a cute Give A Stuff stuffed toy – also dairy-free laugh

“Happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we give.” -- Ben Carson

I’m so excited to tell you about our latest giveaway! It’s possibly the cutest, cuddliest prize that we’ve given away yet. And even better, we’re giving away TWO! Meet the Give A Stuff family:

giveastuff3.jpg

The best thing about Give A Stuff stuffies is that for every one you adopt, a donation goes to an Australian animal sanctuary. So a little furry munchkin gets a safe and happy home with you, AND you help provide safe and happy homes to animals who might have nowhere to go if it weren’t for these sanctuaries. :) Click here to read about the awesome organisations Give A Stuff supports.

So, because it feels so good to give, we’re giving you the opportunity to give one of these gorgeous stuffed animals to someone you know who gives a stuff about animals. AND we’ll throw in one for you as well. :) TWIN STUFFIES!

sheepfriends.jpg
Just like you, animals form strong bonds with friends and family members. Sheep, for example, are friendly, social and make great companions.

All you have to do to enter is let us know in the comments below about someone you know who deserves this gift and why. Entries must be less than 150 words and competition closes 1 December 2013.

Good luck!

Psst! Can’t wait that long to get your arms around a Give A Stuff animal? You can purchase your new furry friend here.

Free dairy-free choccies. For free!

Free dairy-free choccies. For free!

Posted 22 August 2013   by Amy         Permalink | 3 Comments

Tags: dairy, cows, milk, bobby calves, Dave Hughes, competition, contest, chocolate, dairy-free, giveaway, win

Dairy is a bit of a hot topic lately. Did you hear that Dave Hughes has taken up a milk free challenge? “Milk is for baby cows,” Hughesy said. (Click here to send him a message of support.)

What's more, just recently health experts declared that there is no nutritional need for humans to drink cow’s milk. Which makes sense since after all, I’m not a calf. Are you?

I’ve known for a long time that I wasn’t a cow but I’m so pleased that doctors are finally figuring it out too. So I’m celebrating in the best way possible -- by eating LOADS of dairy-free chocolate. (Skip to the bottom of this blog to find out how you can get your hands on some too.)

200-disgust.jpg

Harvard professor Dr Ludwig has said that you can get more calcium from kale than you can from cow’s milk. That means one bowl of this kale and avo salad and you’ll have calcium coming out your ears! But if you’re like me and the thought of eating kale makes your face do this, --> don’t fret because you can also get calcium from nuts, seeds, beans and green leafy vegetables, including my personal fave: broccoli (Check out what else the experts are saying about dairy by clicking here). (That’s not really me in the picture by the way. Although I did have that fringe in primary school.)

The best part about getting calcium from plant sources is that there are no casualties. A lot of Aussies don’t realise that over 700,000 dairy calves (called bobby calves) are killed as ‘waste’ every year.

Thankfully it’s easy to save the lives of dairy calves. Simply give dairy the flick. There are so many great dairy-free alternatives out there these days! Have you been to the milk aisle in your local supermarket lately? Soy milk, oat milk, rice milk, almond milk ... it’s a dairy-free smorgasbord.

And what’s the most delicious use of cruelty-free milk? Cruelty-free chocolate! So let’s get on with it, shall we?

The prize: I have 5 heavenly dairy-free chocolate packs to give away. I don’t use the word ‘heavenly’ lightly. I promise that after one taste you will want MOOOOOOre. (Classic cow gags. Couldn’t help myself.)

How to win: Easy - click here and take the 3 minute chocolate challenge. (Ends 30 September.) Good luck!

Adoption competition winner!

Adoption competition winner!

Posted 12 July 2013   by Amy         Permalink | 1 Comment

Tags: competition, winner, giveaway, adoption

Congratulations to Sol for being the lucky winner of last month’s adoption competition. (Well, Sol’s chooks are the lucky ones really.)

We asked for your stories of adopted animals. And we could not go past Sol's story of rescuing three chickens from living in terrible cramped conditions just weeks before they would’ve been slaughtered.

“They now enjoy dust bathing, roaming free and climbing up fruit trees and eating our peaches! They each have their own personalities. Gingernut is very greedy. Miss Pepperpot likes to hide her eggs and change her hiding spot every few days! And Popcorn loves to jump, run and pop to her food! They can finally stretch their wings properly and love to run (especially when they see me with the food bucket!) They are very cheeky and smart and cunning. It’s nice to see finally that these chickens are loved for who they are and not valued for what they can produce. In fact I love chickens so much I’m going to rescue some more in the near future.”

That last part in bold brought a tear to my eye. Imagine if all animals could live like this. What an amazing world that would be ...

It's clear that the Unleashed community is full of people with inspiring stories of rescued animals. So picking just one winner was tough! I’d like to give a shout out to Tammie2 who rescued two rabbits from filthy conditions and helped them to become happy, healthy bunnies.

Credit to LouiseL as well, who took in a mother and her five pups who had nowhere to go, and found loving homes for all of them. No easy feat cleaning up after five puppies, I’m sure.

And last special mention goes to Steffy T who adopted a cat with possibly the best name ever – Ninja! (Awesome.) Does anyone have a dog named Pirate? Then we could finally answer the age old question ... pirate vs. ninja  - who would win?*

Thanks also to Steffy for summing up my thoughts on adoption to a tee: "Adoption really is the kindest thing you could do for an animal and everyone who adopts is a HERO!"

200-Unlikely-friendships.jpg So a big high five to all the heroes out there. And a high ten to Sol for winning the adorable Unlikely Friendships book. I’m sure it will make a great bedtime story for Miss Pepperpot, Gingernut and Popcorn.

Thanks again to everyone for entering. If you missed out this time, never fear. We will have a new competition up and running very soon! In the meantime, why not be a hero and make the pledge to always adopt.

*Animals Australia does not condone animal fighting of any kind. (Unless maybe Ninja cat and Pirate dog were in suitably fitted sumo wrestling suits and their safety was guaranteed.)

Adoption is a WINNER! And you could be too :)

Adoption is a WINNER! And you could be too :)

Tags: adoption, ad, win, competition, giveaway

Have you seen the new PetRescue ad on telly? TOTES ADORBS! (Sorry, for a second there I thought I was a Kardashian.) It is adorable though. Check it out:
(Keep an eye out for the brief cameo appearance of a big droplet of doggy drool).

I love this ad. Making the choice to adopt an animal instead of buying is such a great way to save a life. (Head to the bottom of this blog to share your stories of a rescued animal and go in the running to WIN the most adorable book EVER.)

I have fostered dogs while they're waiting to find a forever home and loved it! Not only do they already come with a name (which is great for indecisive people like me), they also (usually) know how to not wee in the house. Bonus!

The little treasure pictured below, is a dog I fostered, named Cassius. As you can see, he needed a bit of extra love before he was ready for adoption. When he first came to Maggie's Rescue (escaping euthanasia at the pound by mere minutes) he was more than 15 kilos underweight and so weak that he couldn't even stand up on his own legs. :( We don't know for sure but we think he was raised to be a hunting dog. He had scratches on his face and bald patches on his bottom, probably from being kept outside on the cold concrete.

520-cassius.jpg

With plenty of hugs (and a good bath :-/ ), Cassius quickly came into his true character as a goofy, loveable boy, who wanted to sit on everyone's lap! He also became the poster boy for Maggie's Rescue. Then everybody wanted to adopt him. Let's be honest, nobody can resist a dog in a scarf!

Cassius was abandoned and came so close to being put down. But thanks to the people who adopted him he got a second chance, and is now a much-loved part of the family!

200-Unlikely-friendships.jpg

Anyway, enough of my love story for Cassius. I want to hear about the special animals in your life! Post your story below about an animal you've adopted, or who you've seen get a second chance to find their forever family.

One lucky person will win this super cute Unlikely Friendships book (OMG A MONKEY AND A DOVE AWWWWWWW). We'll judge the winner by funnelling our tears into a beaker. Whichever story creates the biggest fountain of joy will take the awesome prize. Can't wait to read the entries!

Good luck!

Fine print: Entries must be less than 200 words and the competition closes Sunday 30 June.

Winner of the Bare rucksack announced!

Winner of the Bare rucksack announced!

Posted 29 January 2013   by Anthony         Permalink | 4 Comments

Tags: competition, giveaway, Bare, backpack

I've been carrying this secret around all long weekend, and I can't bear it anymore. Read on to find out who won the animal-friendly rucksack from the good people at Bare Backpacks. You never know ... it could be you!!

Bare rucksackAs per usual with any contest on Unleashed - there were many, many, many excellent entries. One of them rhymed, some of them were highly amusing (this was my favourite), and most all of them were original and really inspiring.

To win, all you had to do was tell me what you'd be doing at your school/uni/TAFE/juvenile detention centre in 2013 to make it a kinder place for animals. Simple really. The hard part was choosing the winner!

In the end it came down to two entries - one by Mary6 and one by april-san.

Blue crayons taste the best.Mary's entry was:
"I am going to ask my principal to change the uniform code sheet to say leather or fake leather black school shoes so that my fellow students know they can wear a cruelty free uniform without needing to ask permission."
That was so good it made me wish I could go back to school and not eat so many crayons do the same thing! Unfortunately though Mary - your entry was just too long! Entries had to be 30 words or less. Ooh, harsh, I know :(

BUT!! That IS good news for April who has scored a fully vegan (and fully sick, bro) Bare rucksack with her entry:
"With my uni's Vegetarian Society I'm going to produce and distribute a 'Veg Campus Guide', detailing every vegetarian and vegan option at every vendor on campus to facilitate ethical choices."

Put simply - April is going to make a list of veg food at her uni. Not only will that help students at her uni make kinder choices between lectures; it's something that even YOU could do wherever you're studying this year!

If you missed out this time round - don't sweat it. You can still go in the draw to win free Unleashed stickers. 50 lucky winners are drawn each month - you gotta like those odds!

They're making some seriously good-looking packs from their base in Oregon, USA - and there are no animal products in the making of. They're also generous souls, and have sent us one of their Lido rucksacks to give away to a lucky Unleashed member!

To get the school year started right by winning this pack...

Well, the votes have been cast in the Unleashed office and the winners of the Keep shoes have been decided! Find out who it was and how to enter our new comp!

To be declared the winner of this comp, you had to post a comment telling everyone what you would keep doing in 2013 to help animals. The responses we got were super creative and definitely got me thinking about what more I could be doing in the year ahead. It certainly wasn't easy to pick two winners ... but eventually the decision was made.

So congratulations (and new shoes!) go to:

Roobz who will be spreading the message of kindness:

Roobz' entry

And Elefriend101 who probably gets more done in one morning then I do in an entire week!

Ellie's entry

Thanks to all who entered and especially to the good peeps at Keep. Check 'em out on Facebook if you're ever after good-looking animal-friendly shoes!

If you didn't win this time around, don't stress, because we have a new comp starting already. Now I don't like to make promises I can't keep ... but I'm pretty confident that the prize up for grabs WILL actually make you the coolest kid at school/uni/TAFE/juvenile detention. Find out what it is!

Win Keep shoes!!

Win Keep shoes!!

Tags: competition, giveaway, Keep, shoes

There comes a time in everyone's life when they need a pair of really, unbelievably good shoes. For you - that time is now. We're giving away the best shoes I think I've seen this year. Take a look for yourself then find out how you can win a pair.

Hit the pictures to see the new 2012 collections you can choose from if (when!) you win.

Introducing Keep - the very generous people behind these cool animal-friendly shoes. Launched in 2006 and based in LA, according to them, "Keep is a shoe company, an amalgam of interests, a way of being, a force, a language, a family and many other things." And most importantly, everything they make is completely cruelty-free (and looks unreal).

I could go on for ages about Keep, but I'll limit myself to just these 3 points:
1. They've done a shoe collab with Bon Iver to support an animal sanctuary. That's awesome on many different levels.
2. Their Facebook page is actually interesting, so make sure you go check it out.
3. They're giving away two pairs of sneakers to Unleashed members - one for guys, one for girls. (Adam and Eve would have totally loved this comp.)

To win...

...all you have to do is tell me what you'll be doing in 2013 to keep helping animals. It might be to attend a rally against live exports; to lend that animal rights book you have to one of your friends; or to make that next step in ditching dairy or eggs from your meals. There's a 1000 ways you can help animals in 2013 - you just have to choose one!

Fine print: your entry must be 30 words or less; there'll be one guy and one girl winner; you can only enter once; in case you win and were thinking of getting me a Xmas pressie, I like the Shaheens.

This promotion ends December 23rd which isn't far away - so get your entries in NOW! Good luck!

Oh, and here's something to watch while you're thinking.

Winners of the malc&andi snapbacks announced!

Winners of the malc&andi snapbacks announced!

There are two hats in the closet. One says to the other, "You can stay here, I'm going on a head." *ba-dum-tshh* OK, so maybe that's not the best joke you've heard today. But the winning entries in our malc&andi giveaway are the best tips you'll hear! Take a look. (No more hat jokes, I promise).

malc&andi are a forward thinking fashion label that believes fashion should be fun and adventurous, but also as good for your soul as it is for your body. That's why they donate 5% of all their sales to animal charities. It's also why they very kindly agreed to give away two styling new snapbacks to Unleashed members.

All you had to do to win one was give a tip on how people can help animals beat the heat this summer. There were some outstanding entries - including one that rhymed, one about snakes, and a few about guinea pigs and chickens! The one thing they all had in common though, was how good they were. Judge for yourself here.

But just like a tandem-bike race - there can be only two winners. And here they are:

Congrats horsepowerrrr and *Steph*!

If you didn't win this time around, don't stress. The next Unleashed giveaway starts in a couple of days ... and it's a BIG one. Check back soon to find out more ;)

Winner of the Top Comment for October!

Winner of the Top Comment for October!

Tags: monthly, giveaway, fashion, win, causebands, top comment, I want!, gotta be in it to win it

Wow, another month down! It's gonna be Xmas before you know it. But there's always time to go back through all the comments Unleashed members have posted on the blogs and highlight the best ones. Find out who posted the Top Comment for the month and what it was they had to say!

It was extra good fun reading all the comments from last month, because there were so many different topics covered. The month started with the Veg Week Challenge, and was followed by massive protests around the country against live exports. The latest Unleashed comp was launched, and then the biggest campaign ever attempted by Animals Australia was unveiled - a plan to end factory farming!

But there's more! The month ended with champion iron woman Hayley Bateup bringing a drowned dog back to life, showing those who participated in a rodeo in Queensland what a real hero looks like.

Phew! See what I mean by a lot going on??

But enough of my whinging, you probably just want to know who posted the Top Comment this month. So here goes:

Buddha Baby put into words what thousands of people around Australia would have been feeling early in the month. As thousands of Aussie sheep were being brutally killed in Pakistan, Australians of all ages and backgrounds took to the streets to demand an end to live exports. Buddha Baby was one of them, and here is what she wrote:

"I was really proud to have been a part of this. I took my 2 young daughters to the rally in Brisbane and it was great. Animals Australia did a great job. Keep up the good work. With persistence we will win this battle."

I couldn't agree more! Congrats Buddha Baby for showing your support for animals and also for winning this month's Top Comment prize.

So, onto November. More campaigns, more ways you can help, and more prizes up for grabs. All you have to do for your chance to win is get posting on the blogs. Couldn't be easier, really. Good luck!

Oh, and the prize for November is a complete set of Unleashed cause bands. There's four of them so you can wear two on each wrist ... or one on each wrist if you're lucky enough to have four hands. Imagine how fast you could type!!

* We love it when you comment on blogs! We love it even more when your comments are thoughtful, inspiring, or make us laugh!! So just to be clear, this is not about who posts the most comments. It's about who posts what we think is the top comment for the month. You might only post one comment this month. But if it's a cracker, then you could be walking away with the complete set of causebands to show for it.

Spring has definitely sprung, and summer is just around the corner. Mr. Sun is spending more time in the sky, so what better opportunity to give away some cool new malc&andi hats! Read on to find out how you can win in our latest competition!

There's a lot to like about summer. Inflatable pool parties, taking the dog to the beach, even backyard cricket against your bro or sis (I always used to thrash my brother. Hah - take that, James!!) The thing you'll like best about this coming summer though will be one of these exclusive malc&andi snapbacks. Mmm, snapbacks - so hot right now!

These Wild Caps feature fun and quirky animal designs and are for those who are prepared to make a statement. Check out the pics then take a look at the full range.

I've seen some cool hats in my time, but these would have to be right up there. Plus, did you know that malc&andi donate money from every sale they make to animal charities?? That's gotta be worth a "like" on their Facebook page, hint hint ;)

If you wanna get one of these hats in time for summer, here's how you can win. Just tell us:

What's one tip you can give to help animals beat the heat this summer??

(e.g. "My tip to help animals beat the heat this summer would be to never, ever leave dogs in the car!!" If you need any more help, you can steal find ideas here.)

Easy as that! Post your tip in the comments below, and keep it less than 30 words. You can only enter once, and can only give one tip! The two best entries will each score the hat of their choice. Winners will be chosen on the 16/11/12, so get your thinking caps on!

Winner of the best comment for September!

Winner of the best comment for September!

Posted 5 October 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 3 Comments

Tags: monthly, giveaway, fashion, win, badges, top comment, I want!, Gotta be in it to win it

Aaaalright - the best comments on the blogs for the month of September have been decided upon. There were heaps of excellent comments provided last month which made deciding on a winner really tricky. And even worse - I went to all the effort of making fake accounts for myself so I could win the prize, and still my comments weren't the best! Read on to find out who can take bragging rights for Top Comment last month.

Our first runner-up is Kelsey1. She came close for promising to show heroic Hero Pig in action. An excellent idea for letting people know how amazing pigs are.

SaRa_aRaS fixed her dodgy Caps Lock button and poured out her true feelings for Gumby after he exposed the reality of factory farms.

But the big winner this month is ... ... Riss!! Riss was moved to comment after our world-exclusive interview with Levy the Lamb, and I'm sure her comment is one that you would have to agree with. For her efforts, Riss scores a complete Unleashed campaign sticker pack. Mmm...sticky.

So there you have it - just three of the best comments from last month. You can see how easy it is, so if you want to be in the running for October's prize all you have to do is post on the blogs. Heck, just mash your keyboard randomly with your hands, you never know - you might somehow create the most perfect comment the interweb has ever seen.

Oh, and the prize for October is a complete set of Unleashed's funky little badges. There's four in the set ... I'd suggest wearing them all at once.

* We love it when you comment on blogs! We love it even more when your comments are thoughtful, inspiring, or make us laugh!! So just to be clear, this is not about who posts the most comments. It's about who posts what we think is the top comment for the month. You might only post one comment this month. But if it's a cracker, then you could be walking away with the complete badge set to show for it.

Winner of the Herbivore Clothing comp announced!

Winner of the Herbivore Clothing comp announced!

Posted 4 October 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | Be the first to comment

Tags: competition, giveaway, fashion, t-shirt, Herbivore Clothing, winner

There was a massive response to our Herbivore Clothing competition which has just wrapped up. All you had to do for your chance to win a sweet new Herbivore shirt was tell us which celebrity you'd want to hang out with for the day, and why.

Choices ranged from dancers to talk-show hosts through to German Nobel Prize winning physicists (oooh, I wonder which one?)

BUT - unlike sports carnival day when you're a little kid and everyone is given a sticker just for having a go - there can be only one winner! And in this case it is sammstein!

Sammstein said she could imagine chilling with: "Adalita from Magic Dirt. Why? HAVE YOU SEEN THAT WOMAN IN CONCERT?!!! She roars!! And she is an animal activist, I mean, what more could you want from a rock chick!"

Good call, sammstein. I'm sure you and Adalita would have a great time (especially you, 'cos you'll be rocking a new shirt!)

Remember though, you don't have to be an uber-famous celebrity to be a superstar for animals. There's so many ways you can get involved and make a difference for those who need your help the most. Why not make a start right now?

p.s. Unleashed's next comp is mere days away - so keep your eyes skinned and check back regularly for it.

Check out the top comment for August!

Tags: Top Comment, monthly, giveaway, fashion, win, stickers, I want!, gotta be in it to win it

Every month the best comment on the blogs is picked out and highlighted. It might be funny, it might be thought-provoking, it might be poorly spelt. It might even be something YOU wrote. Find out what August's top comment was here ...

August's Top Comment:
"This is so disturbing. I've been in shock. It's hard to find the words to really express the absolute horror that those beautiful pigs go through. There is around 12,000 signatures on the petition last time I checked which is incredible! Going to the rally on Saturday, really looking forward to it. Making vegan cupcakes to share afterwards." Lily Meave, on Unimaginable cruelty at NSW piggery.

That's what Unleashed member Lily Meave had to say after the hellish conditions at Wally's Piggery were exposed in August. For her passion and energy, she's won the Unleashed badges that were up for grabs in August for the best comment of the month.

The prize for this month (September) is a complete Unleashed campaign sticker pack. Get commenting to win!

The competition details ...
Have you ever found $20 in your pocket weeks after putting it in there? Feels pretty sweet doesn't it? Everybody loves scoring something for free, And we're making those dreams come true every month with our Top Comment Comp!

Here's how it works: Blogs get posted on Unleashed. You comment on blogs. At the end of each month, we'll pick the top comment posted that month. If one of your comments is the funniest, smartest, deepest for the month - then you win the prize. Boom. Easy as that.

The winner is announced at the end of each month, and all blog comments will be considered.* Good luck!!

Great dads of the animal world!

Great dads of the animal world!

Posted 28 August 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 6 Comments

Tags: Fathers' Day, marmoset, penguin, frog, seahorse, amazing, dad, competition, giveaway

It's Father's Day this weekend, so what better time to rank some of the animal kingdom's best dads. These doting dads prove it's not just human fathers who deserve a pair of socks and a card on Father's Day.

In fourth place for the best dad award is the barking frog. This froggy father will sit beside his offspring while they are still in their egg sacs, keeping them moist until birth. These guys would be higher on the list ... if they weren't wetting the eggs with their own urine. Still, it's the thought that counts, right?? Bonus picture included of an oreophryne frog dad who hugs all his little ones at night to keep them moist and protect them from insects. What a guy!

Third place goes to the marmoset (a little monkey from South America). These dutiful dads take over the baby-sitting soon after birth, grooming and licking their infants. Later the dads will feed their young 'uns as well as piggyback them all over the place. This probably continues until the young marmosets get their driver's license and a car (I didn't pay much attention in science class).

Second place is claimed by the very deserving male emperor penguin. The Antarctic is so cold that if penguin eggs were to just touch the ground the embryo inside would most likely never be born. So what does dad do? He holds the eggs on the top of his feet covered by his belly ... for two months ... without eating! If you look up "dedication" in the dictionary, there'll probably be a picture of an emperor penguin looking straight back at you.

But at the top of this list of animal dads, winning the title of "Father of the Year 2012" is the seahorse. Seahorses are always going to be pretty hard to beat, seeing as how they are the ones who actually give birth! Yep, I've checked my research and it's true. On average, a seahorse will give birth to 100-200 "fries". That's a dad who takes his job pretty seriously.

So there you go. There are some pretty exceptional dads in the human world too, but it's worth remembering this Father's Day that animals also care for their young and want them to grow up and be healthy.

What is it about your dad that makes him so great? Tell us in 30 words or less and you could win an Unleashed stubby holder to give to him as a pressie. Entries close Friday 31st August.

WINNER ANNOUNCED: An Unleashed drinks cooler is on its way to Samanthadavey (and her dad) for making everyone at UL feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)

Herbivore Clothing Company: a store that sells awesome cruelty-free stuff with a pro-animal message. Examples include t-shirts, jumpers, wallets, and books.

Designed for herbivores and other animal lovers, their tees not only look good - they also carry a message that's worth showing off.

Winner of the Malc & Andi bag announced!

Winner of the Malc & Andi bag announced!

Posted 24 August 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 5 Comments

Tags: giveaway, handbag, fashion, win, winner winner tofu dinner!

The time has come to announce the winner of our recent giveaway - the very tres chic Lamb Bag from Malc & Andi. This handbag is completely cruelty-free and comes from a company that proudly donates part of its profits to animal charities - including Animals Australia.

Alright - so before the winner is announced, can I tell you that picking just one winner for this giveaway was reeeeally hard. The amount of entries received and the stories that people told are a good sign for animals all around the country. With Unleashed members out there lending a hand, animals have got some formidable allies! Now ... let's see who won the handbag!

This entry from Rabidewok was great: "I dressed up as an animal and danced in Rundle Mall with friends handing out leaflets about co-existing peacefully with all animals!" And this one from laraking was also pretty cool: "Any animal that comes my way I give a gentle smile, a snack, a drink, a pat, kind words - and I'm vegan." And there were heaps of other entries just as good!

But just like an arm-wrestle against your sister - there can be only one winner (I'm 3 from 5!). And in this case, it's SammyGee95!

"For the past few months I have been designing fliers and walking around my city putting them into every mail box I pass. They contain a bit of information about vegetarianism and veganism, but instead of being a sheet of boring facts, I have tried to make sure that the facts are relevant to the people in my city. I am doing this at my own expense (ink isn't cheap I tell you!) and I am giving people the chance to contact me if they want to know more. It is a really hard job because I am also working 7 days a week, but it is really important to me and I have had some emails from people telling me that they were shocked and interested by the information I provided. It is really good to know that I am opening the eyes of some people out there who have obviously not been exposed to the truth before.

I also made up some A4 posters on coloured paper, each with a fact on it about animal cruelty IN AUSTRALIA. I have handed these out in the mall and on street corners, despite being a really shy person, and I love the conversations I have gotten into with people about animals and their views.

I believe that if I can spread my knowledge to 100 people and just 1 of those people makes the choice to stop supporting animal cruelty through their diet, then I have done my job and it is totally worth it."

Remember - you don't need to be a superhero to help animals. Deciding what you're going to have for lunch might seem like a trivial matter to you, but it can seriously save lives. It's the same when you hit the shops. Attending a rally, writing letters, handing out leaflets, or volunteering at an animal shelter helps animals and can inspire others to do the same. And all these little things add up to make a big impact for animals. What are you planning to do this week to help animals?

Another month done, another bunch of excellent comments on the blogs! The blog that seemed to generate a fair bit of interest (and where the best comment for the month has been picked from) was about a testicle cookbook. Yes - a testicle cookbook. Read the full entry here ... if you have a strong stomach.

Most readers thought a testicle cookbook was a pretty nutty idea, and debaybay got the lols by pointing out "the looks you would get at the supermarket giving the checkout chick testicles."

The best comment of the month though, goes to The Sair Scare, who hit the nail square on the head:

"When you really, truly consider the reality of eating meat, testicle pizza does not feel all that much more vulgar. I don't understand why most meat eaters have no qualms eating thighs, wings, breasts, connective tissue, blood vessels, flesh and blood, and yet are grossed out by eyes, tongues and testicles. It's all pretty gross to me."

100%. Agreed. Well done Sair Scare - a complete set of cause bands is heading your way!

Remember, this is a regular giveaway so now we're looking for the best comment of August! The prize for this month is a complete Unleashed badge set! To win, all you have to do is tell us what you're thinking by commenting under the blogs.* Have fun!

* We love it when you comment on blogs! We love it even more when your comments are thoughtful, inspiring, or make us laugh!! So just to be clear, this is not about who posts the most comments. It's about who posts what we think is the top comment for the month. You might only post one comment this month. Is this Unleashed's most stylish giveaway?

Is this Unleashed's most stylish giveaway?

Posted 4 July 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 69 Comments

Tags: giveaway, fashion, win

Some things are never going to be fashionable. Fur springs to mind, as do meat-bikinis. However, if you want something that is super-stylish and guaranteed to be a killer present either for yourself (or someone you know, fellas *hint-hint* ), then you can't go past this amazing giveaway!

This may well be the most stylish contest ever run on Unleashed. NSW fashion label malc&andi already prove their generosity by donating 5% of their sales to animal protection organisations (including Animals Australia). Now they're giving you the chance to win one of their very cool, very stylish Lamb Bags. And before you ask - all malc&andi products are completely animal-friendly! Take a look at their website for the full range - there's bags, watches, belts, sunnies...

I'm not gonna pretend as though I'm a handbag connoisseur (I carry my stuff in a bindle), so I'll let the photos do the describing.

Getting your hands on the handbag is simple! Just tell us how you're lending a hand to animals. You could be out leafleting; spreading the word online, taking the pledge to not use products tested on animals ... there's a thousand ways you can be helping animals! If you want some ideas then you'll find 'em here! You can also read about Unleashed members getting really active for animals here.

So to recap:
1. malc&andi sell stylish (and animal-friendly) bags and accessories.
2. You can win one of their handbags.
3. Just tell us how you're helping animals!

Easy-peasy. Entries into the comments below. Comp closes August 17th! Good luck!

Tags: monthly, giveaway, fashion, win, causebands, top comment, I want!, gotta be in it to win it

The first winner of our regular monthly giveaway has been announced! To refresh your memories: every month you've got the chance to win Unleashed merch simply by commenting on the blogs. How easy is that? And because Unleashed members are both intelligent AND compassionate, it was always going to be hard to pick the best comment for the month.

Here's some of the best for June:

kayne gave us "Omg some people are really wrong", referring to the bizarre ad made by fur breeders in Europe. Can't argue with that.

kat6 was happy to hear about changes to the law in Queensland, and also did her part to help dugongs and turtles: "Yay! A leap forward in the right direction! Fired an email off to the Minister for Agriculture, fingers crossed he can enforce a law to prevent turtles and dugongs being hunted altogether!"

But there can be only one winner, and last month it was 4_da_animals1 with her thoughts on the Norwegian teen heroes who rescued a lamb from drowning!

"It's these kinds of stories that ought to be making the news. Proving to the world that compassion and empathy are both attractive qualities accessible by all, as long as they are willing to open their eyes, if only for a moment, to the impact their choices and decisions have on other species."

Couldn't have said it better myself. Wait ... you're not gunning for my job are you??

Remember, this is a regular giveaway so now we're looking for the best comment of July! The prize for this month is a complete set of Unleashed causebands. They don't wipe sweat off your forehead but they do look pretty cool.

But if it's a cracker, then you could be walking away with the causebands!

Socks are definitely the under-appreciated members of the fashion family. Tucked away at the back of the wardrobe most of the time; then when they are picked for a day out they're hidden in shoes and under pant legs where no-one can see them! Poor socks :( But, that's about to change for two lucky pairs of socks who have won brand new owners who I'm sure will wear them proudly for all to see! That's right, winners have been chosen in the Tofu Robot Socks Poetry Competition! Or as I call it - the 'ToRoSoPoCo'.

I have to tell you how impressed I was by the quality of entries. The rhymes were original and generally they even rhymed, which is always a good start! Obviously English teachers around Australia deserve a pay-rise (not you though Maths teachers - not until you make your subject interesting.)

There were dozens of quality entries, but only two pairs of socks to give away. If you missed out this time, then make sure you enter the Unleashed competition to win a pair of free Etiko sneakers.

Alright, so now the important part - the winning entries!

treehugga pointed to the health benefits of eating tofu with this effort:
I need some good protein that's cruelty free
Tofu is clearly the choice for me!

While Brodie put together a charming ode to the animals:
I love chicken and lamb and kangaroo
They all play in the paddock while I eat tofu!

Your socks (and probably an invite to appear on the next Hilltops' album) are on the way!

Monthly giveaway...because you deserve it!

Monthly giveaway...because you deserve it!

Posted 1 June 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 10 Comments

Tags: monthly, giveaway, fashion, win, t-shirts, top comment, I want!, gotta be in it to win it

Have you ever found $20 in your pocket weeks after putting it in there? Feels pretty sweet doesn't it? Everybody loves scoring something for free. That's why I'm pleased to announce the beginning of Unleashed's regular giveaway competition! It's called the Top Comment Comp, and it begins ... now!

Here's how it works: Blogs get posted on Unleashed. You comment on blogs. At the end of each month, we'll pick the top comment posted that month. If one of your comments is the funniest, smartest, deepest for the month - then you win the prize. Boom. Easy as that.

The prize will change every month, and to get things rolling the prize for June is an Unleashed T-shirt. You choose which one you reckon would show off your sexy arms the best (it's gonna take more than a shirt to make my pasta arms look presentable), and we'll send it to you. Unleashed shirts are sweatshop free, and guaranteed to make you look (more!) attractive.* In these T's you'll be kicking ass for the animals in style.

Here's some of the shirts you could be choosing from.

Scope the full range here.

The winner will be announced at the end of the month, and all blog comments will be considered.** Good luck!!

* Well, it can't hurt anyway.

** We love it when you comment on blogs! We love it even more when your comments are thoughtful, inspiring, or make us laugh!! So just to be clear, this is not about who posts the most comments. It's about who posts what we think is the top comment for the month. You might only post one comment this month. But if it's a cracker, then you could be walking away with a hot new shirt to show for it.

Walk with the greats with FREE SHOES!

Walk with the greats with FREE SHOES!

Posted 16 May 2012   by Anthony         Permalink | 164 Comments

Tags: shoes, competition, giveaway, vegan, sneakers, cruelty-free, so easy to win, free, yes please

Being kind to animals isn't a new invention. It's not like ipads or robots. When you speak up for animals, you're walking in the shoes of many amazing and inspiring people. Now, we've teamed up with VeganSneaker.com to give you a chance to step out in cruelty-free style like some of the greats, with these sweet Etiko kicks.

We've got two pairs of sneakers to give away to two lucky Unleashed members!

It may seem obvious, but I'll say it anyway, VeganSneaker.com specialise in selling vegan sneakers from Aussie company Etiko. Etiko's slogan is "Wear No Evil". This means no kids sweating in factories, no ripped off workers without toilet breaks, and no animal products in their shoes!

Some of the greatest minds the world has ever seen have stood up for animals. Albert Einstein for starters. When the German genius wasn't blowing minds with his theory of rela-la-tivi-li-ty (I can't even pronounce it) he was telling the world, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet".

And what about Gandhi, who said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated". FYI, I bet Gandhi would have loved a pair of Etikos on his famous Salt March. Just sayin'.

There've been pollies, athletes and musos - all who have walked the walk when it comes to treating animals with respect. Jose Gonzalez, Missy Higgins and Jona Weinhofen just to name a few.

To get your hands on (and feet into) these vegan sneakers we want you to talk the talk. All you have to do is share your favourite quote about animals/activism in the comments. It can be inspiring, thoughtful, funny, anything! (If you don't know any quotes, then google is your friend.)

But wait! There's more! The two winners will also have their entries turned into hot new facebook covers, to help get the idea out there that everyone can treat animals with respect. So stop reading, and start writing! Entries into the comments by June 30th! Good luck!

Get creative and WIN COOL GEAR!

Get creative and WIN COOL GEAR!

Tags: giveaway, fashion, win

Winter is approaching so unfortunately it's time to pack away the thongs (under the bed, never to be seen again) and get out the winter warmers. Just in time for the change of seasons is our latest giveaway!

Spicy Brown (the brains behind Tofu Robot) has come up with these cool toe socks designed for feet just like yours, and we've got two pairs up for grabs.

Wear them...
  • ... to school!
  • ... to slide on floors!
  • ... to keep your tootsies warm!
  • ... to tuck your pants into when you're riding your bike! OK, maybe not this one.

If you want to get your hands (and feet, I guess) on these bad boys, then you're going to have to get a little creative. I want you to get your Jay-Z (or Kanye) on and come up with a two-line poem about the wonders of tofu. Post your efforts into the comments below! The two best efforts will win the socks. Pretty simple really. Here's an example:

Roses are red, violets are blue
My stir-fry is pretty much just all fried tofu.

You probably can't do much worse than that so have a crack at it and you could be a winner! Rhymes need to be submitted by the 29th of May.

All this talk about stir fries has made me hungry. Time for lunch I think!

WIN dairy-free Easter goodies!

WIN dairy-free Easter goodies!

Posted 20 March 2012   by Jesse         Permalink | 121 Comments

Tags: Easter, chocolate, giveaway, dairy, bobby calves, milk, video

!easter-2.jpgEaster is just around the corner. If you're as loco for cocoa as me, you're probably already drooling over the idea of a long weekend devouring chocolate. But we couldn't wait that long... We're getting into the spirit of Easter early and are giving away a delicious cruelty-free Easter pack to one Unleashed member now. Read on to find out how this lucky person could be you ;)

While Easter can be a sweet deal for us, it's often a sour deal for animals. But it doesn't have to be. By going dairy-free you can be sure to have an awesome Easter while also being sweet to animals.

Here's why...

Because dairy-free chocolate is amazing!
Don't take my word for it. If you're a chocoholic, you owe it to yourself to try Bonvita Rice Milk Chocolate (they even do white chocolate!). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are loads of other delicious dairy-free chocolates out there.

Then there's this...

Most Aussies don't realise that over 700,000 dairy calves (called 'bobby calves') are killed as 'waste products' in the dairy industry every year. But going dairy-free means chocolate doesn't have to be a death sentence for dairy calves.

You might even be surprised how easy ditching dairy can be. Not only is there a great range of dairy-free chocolates in most supermarkets, we've got the (dairy-free)-cream of the crop in the Unleashed shop, to make it super-easy for you to get the perfect prezzies to put on your own wishlist this Easter!. Check out these goodies:

easter-1.jpgeaster-2.jpg
easter-3.jpgeaster-4.jpg

How amazing are they! And what's even more amazing is you could score one of these for free. Just tell us who you'd most like to share dairy-free chocolate with and why. Leave a comment below, and the best answer will score an 'Easter Chicken Gift Pack', including 2 delicious bonvita rice milk egg packs and an adorable chick adoption.

-----------------------------------------------------------

2nd April 2012 And the winner is ....*em* who plans on using this choccie to start a new dairy-free chocolate addiction in her workplace!

Huge thanks to everyone who entered the comp - what a generous bunch you all are!

Don't be too disappointed if you missed out - remember you can grab dairy-free chocolate in most supermarkets in the health food aisle... See it must be good for us!

Why Fish Like Space & How to WIN a DVD

Why Fish Like Space & How to WIN a DVD

Posted 28 September 2011   by Jesse         Permalink | 47 Comments

Tags: fish, giveaway, oceans, cuttlefish, film

I'm excited to let you know that we've got a copy of the stunning Oceans DVD to give away. So read on to find out how you could be checking out some of the most amazing animals under the sea.

Don't you agree, there's something nice about watching fish swim? You know at first glance it's easy to believe there isn't too much thinking going on upstairs in fish, but keep watching and it's amazing how you start to notice how each animal has her own personality and quirks.

A lot of people seem to find watching fish calming -- or more precisely, see fish as a calming 'decoration'. Why else would so many houses and offices install fish tanks, and why else would Google offer this very cute gadget (below). But to be honest, I much prefer watching fish swim in their natural environment -- not a fish tank. And not surprisingly, it turns out fish prefer this too.

Researchers recently compared the behaviour of fish in the wild; in a large artificial 'stream' in a zoo; and in smaller tanks used by pet owners. What they found is that the smaller the tank, and the less 'complex' (ie. no rocks, plants, hiding places, etc) the tank was the more aggressive the fish became -- sometimes even escalating to nipping and attacking other fish.

When you think about it, it's not really that surprising. If you put me in a small empty room, I'd be pretty annoyed as well. Obviously, like us fish feel pain. And when you consider all the other amazing things scientists have discovered about fish, it makes sense that they might experience boredom and frustration too.

For example, did you know that fish communicate with each other using squeaks and squeals that you and I can only hear with special instruments? Or that in some species the older fish teach the youngens -- about things like predators, and even to recognise the sound of trawling boats. Or that some fish use tools... such as stingsrays working out how to extract food from plastic tubes by shooting jets of water; or blackspot tuskfish using a rock to open a clam's shell.

And don't even get me started on how cool cuttlefish are (although technically they're not a fish)! Ahem ... I guess what I'm trying to say is: Sea animals is pretty amazing! And there's a whole lot more going on upstairs in the animals that live down below than we often give them credit for.

Oceans DVD Giveaway!

The Disney doco, Oceans, is about to be released on DVD and we have a copy that could be yours. All you need to do to enter is leave a comment below and tell us one good reason people should care about fish.

UPDATE You guys are all so awesome for knowing how awesome fish are! These responses are all fabulous! Unfortunately there can only be one winner ..... And the DVD goes to *drumroll* Liz2! Well done Liz! And massive THANK YOUs to everyone for entering!

Tags: giveaway, books, Jonathan Safran Foer, Eating Animals, audio, radio

What's better than a radio interview with acclaimed author Jonathan Safran Foer? A radio interview with Jonathan and ME! :) We were both recently guests on the program Uncovering the Real Costs of Factory Farming on Voice America's Social Myth Busting show. Yep, I certainly keep some good company! You can listen to our show here:

With an hour up our sleeves we almost covered it all -- from factory farming and environmental impacts of meat-eating, to crazy nasty diet-related diseases. But it's not all doom and gloom because I was quite vocal about how we can all change this!

If you don't know who JSF is, he's the author of an amazing book, Eating Animals, which is a super eye-opening look at the way we eat. The book gained lots of attention worldwide because it could change your life, like it did for Natalie Portman! Want more proof? Check out how fans of our favourite vegan talkshow queen Ellen DeGeneres reacted after reading Jonathan's book:

I know you're just wishing that we'd put copies of Eating Animals under YOUR seat... Sorry! But we have done the next best thing. You can grab a copy of Eating Animals right now in the Unleashed shop or ... you can win a copy if you head over here to our big sister site Animals Australia and tell us what you'll do this year to help end factory farming.

Oh and you should tell me here too, so I can pass it on to my new BFF, JSF!

Tags: giveaway, Macbeth, vegan, leather, fashion, Jona Weinhofen, bands

Want to kick off the new year in style? Well we've got just the thing! Read on and you could win a specky new treat for your feet.

We all know that Macbeth make rad shoes. For starters, they were co-founded by Tom DeLonge, of Blink 182 fame. Not to mention they've got musicians like Mike Dirnt of Green Day designing moshpit stompers for them. And last but definitely not least, most of their shoes are leather free. So you can strut in style whilst leaving the cows to be cows.

We were chuffed to learn recently that one of our fave people, Aussie guitar maestro Jona Weinhofen from Bring Me the Horizon (+ ex-Bleeding Through, + ex-I Killed the Prom Queen) has got on board with Macbeth to promote their vegan range.

So to celebrate all things stylish, cruelty-free and that rock your socks off, we've got 2 pairs of Wallister Macbeths to give away! Just check out our exclusive interview with Jona (from back in his Bleeding Through days), and then to enter leave a comment to tell us how you plan to step up and make a difference in 2011 (winners will be announced in mid January).

Meat Is For Pussies

Meat Is For Pussies

Meat is for Pussies

If you are anything like me, when a new book on veganism/vegetarianism/animal rights (in a nutshell) is released, I am super keen to check it out and the new book by frontman for the Cro-Mags, John Joseph was no exception

When I first read the title Meat is for Pussies I really didn't know what to expect, but I can confidently say now that I am most impressed!

As claimed on the cover 'A how-to guide for dudes ' and well 'yes' it is aimed more towards you guys out there, but as a chick who has read it I can tell you that it works for both, I totally enjoyed reading it!

In the first few pages it is obvious that author John Joseph doesn't sugar coat his words, he speaks to the reader in a raw, matter-of-fact style that can not be mistaken. Coming from a rough and ready background of NYC, he draws on his own experiences to inform the reader that there is much to be gained by adopting a plant based diet and he quickly squashes any misconceptions that vegetarians and vegans are weedy or wimpy.

Meat is for Pussies outlines a number of 'truths' that have been well hidden from consumers in order to protect the industries that thrive and profit at the expense of millions of innocent, suffering animals each year.

So Meat is for Pussies definitely is worth a read! And you're in luck, cause we've got a copy of this great book to give away. Check out our exclusive interview with John Joseph and enter to win!

Have you read Meat is for Pussies? What did you think? Got any other animal rights books you'd recommend? Leave a comment.

Win Free Tix To See Food, Inc!

Posted 25 May 2010   by         Permalink | 18 Comments

Tags: veg, health, film, giveaway, food, factory farming, environment, cows

So I just went out and saw a great movie. I didn't feel much like eating the popcorn though (I'll tell you why in a sec). Believe me, you MUST see Food, Inc. SO it's lucky that we've got 5 double passes to give away!

I don't think I need to tell you how cruel factory farms are. In fact, I'm sure you tell other people about this all the time. And no doubt you've come across at least one person who seemed not to care. Well, maybe they'd care if they knew they might literally be eating sh!t!

I've had the misfortune of visiting a feedlot. I saw how they pile up the dung in the middle of each pen to provide - get this -"enrichment for the cows"! Many of the cows I've seen in feedlots were caked in each others faeces from nose to tail, so it's really no surprise that some of that finds its stinky way into the meat people eat. I know... YUCK! It sounds like I'm making this up, I wish I was. But this is actually a reality! In fact, Food, Inc. features a 2 year old, who died after eating a hamburger infected with E.coli from traces of cow dung in the meat.

Oh yeah, the popcorn. I learnt today that if the massive amount of corn grown isn't used for livestock, it's used for nearly everything else. As high-fructose corn syrup, you can find it in cakes, cheese, yoghurt, Coca-Cola, bread, orange juice, even in batteries and charcoal. They grow too much corn, because of government subsidies and so they end up putting it in charcoal?!? Don't they realise there are people starving in Africa!? And here we all are wondering why people make corny puns, we can't help it - there's an excess of corn to go round!

Even if you've already made the healthy switch to being veg or vegan, there is still so much to learn about the food you consume. There are moments in this film that will have you throwing that popcorn at the screen in frustration, but it's an excellent film and well worth checking out!

If you care about animals, people, the environment or yourself, this film is a must see. And here's how you could WIN a free double pass: Leave a comment below to tell us what makes you hungry for change and you could win! The competition ends next Monday (31/05/10), so be quick if you don't want to miss out!

UPDATE: Congrats to the winners who each get a double pass to see this amazing movie. Well done to sarahwithanh27, Carly, Sammy, Sabavana and Nikkikats. Enjoy watching Food, Inc. (with or without the popcorn)!

Win an EARTHLINGS DVD!

Win an EARTHLINGS DVD!

Posted 4 May 2010   by Karen         Permalink | 70 Comments

Tags: giveaway, DVD, Earthlings, Moby, Joaquin Phoenix, Film

You'll never forget the first time you see EARTHLINGS.

It's a journey into a world that most people never get to see. Using hidden cameras and never-before-seen footage, EARTHLINGS is the most comprehensive film ever made about the ways people use animals for food, clothing, experimentation and entertainment.

Think you know where pets come from? How cows are turned into leather jackets? Or how meat actually gets from inside a pig and onto a plate? Well most people actually have no idea! And believe me, the truth is more shocking than you could ever imagine.

Earthilngs DVD

That's why gutsy filmmakers Nation Earth teamed up with Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator) and platinum-selling record artist Moby to create EARTHLINGS - a wake-up call to all of humankind. Though it took six long years and lots of money to make, the filmmakers believe its message is so important that you can now see the film right now online, for free.

Are you ready for the truth?

To mark the release of EARTHLINGS online, Unleashed is giving away a free EARTHLINGS DVD in original high quality. It could be yours! Just comment below to tell us who in the world would you most like to show EARTHLINGS to, and why?

UPDATE Wow, Earthlings has certainly stirred up the passion in everyone with some amazing and very creative answers. We all agree this incredible movie needs to be shown to everyone from friends and family to Oprah, the Obamas and Kevin Rudd. Ryan wants to travel back in time and show his younger self, while Hayley W wants to show her ethics class. All wonderful ideas and we hope you can do it (Ryan may have a bit of trouble though!). It was a tough decision but Celia won the vote with her poignant answer: "I would like to show it to that little, vulnerable, curious child inside every one of us that does care, that does hear the screaming, that does feel their pain, that does want to and knows that we CAN make a difference". Well done Celia!

And remember, everyone wins here! Because we can all keep sharing this important movie with our friends. The more people that see Earthlings, the better!

Speak Up for Lab Animals & WIN FREE LIP BALM!

Speak Up for Lab Animals & WIN FREE LIP BALM!

Posted 21 April 2010   by Karen         Permalink | 44 Comments

Tags: animal testing, giveaway, Perfect Potion, Colgate-Palmolive, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, activism

I was never a huge fan of science in school. The lab always smelled funny and those goggles and aprons were never as flattering as our science teacher made them out to be. But as torturous as that all was, I actually had it pretty easy...

Can you imagine having to spend your entire life in a science laboratory?

That's the reality for millions of rabbits, mice, cats, dogs and other animals. But there's no safety equipment for these little guys. To test consumer products such as hairspray, toilet cleaner and cosmetics, lab animals have nasty chemicals dripped directly into their eyes, and are given chemical burns to their skin. Others are forced to ingest harmful substances that cause painful poisoning and worse - death.

Sadly this isn't science fiction - it's a real-life horror story. But with your help we can give the animals a happy ending...

Not many people know that some of the most well-known companies like Colgate/Palmolive, Procter & Gamble (who own Braun, CoverGirl, Gillette, Pantene,Wella, Herbal Essences, Vidal Sassoon, Duracell and more) and Unilever (who own Dove, Rexona, Lynx, SunSilk, Impulse, Lux, Vaseline, Domestos and more) still fund deadly tests on animals overseas before sending their products down under for us to buy. If you have any of their products at home, you have a great opportunity to help end animal testing by calling their customer feedback number (usually on the pack), and politely letting them know that you won't buy their products again after learning that their company funds animal tests.

merchthumb.php?q=99&g=90&s=180&q=95

Now, we know that your lips might get a little chapped if you have to make a few calls, so to show our thanks, and to celebrate how amazing cruelty-free cosmetics are, we're giving away FREE Vanilla Bean Lip Balm from Perfect Potion to five courageous callers!

To be in the draw simply comment below and tell us who you called, and how it went :-)

UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone who phoned, emailed or sent letters to companies telling them to leave the animals alone! Unleashed certainly has some outspoken members who should be very proud of themselves! In the end the lip-smacking winners of the Vanilla Bean Lip-Balm are brookeb, angelaartsstudent, AlanaRama, Tracy and Katie2. Thanks again and well done to all of you who entered, and don't forget to always speak up for animals!

Do you just *LOVE* those sunny days chillaxing on the beach and catching some waves ... but HATE the way your drink always dribbles condensation all over your hand, and warms to an unpleasant temperature WAY before you've reached the bottom?

Unleashed Badges

Not long ago we unveiled to you the 3 cutest badges in the world. To celebrate we asked you where you would pin these animal activist accessories, and promised to make five lucky entrants very very happy by sending them out a pack of all 3. Well today's the day... so the question is: Are you feeling lucky?

Without further ado, congratulations to tomatoslater for wanting to add some flare to her cruelty free kicks; to Rainer for suggesting she'd turn her piggy companions into advocates; and to Georgie who is going put a smile on sick kids' faces when she shows off her cute new badges. We also loved the idea that the student's in Vic's math class would learn that 'animal + exploitation = sucks', not to mention 'teacher + Unleashed badges = cool teacher'. Finally congrats to corkface for not only coming up with some great spots to sport these badges, but being so eager to get her hands on them that she just kept on coming back with more great ideas.

And if it wasn't your lucky day, then a quick trip to the Unleashed shop can set things straight ;)

After much deliberation, the winners of the new Unleashed poster comp have been decided. With so many awesome entries it was impossible for us to pick just one winner.

So we didn't!

A drum roll please...

Congrats to Georgie for setting a stellar example to other med students and future patients of how to live a healthy and cruelty free life. And a big 'hoorah!' to nAoMi for her kick ass creativity! We admire any (super)hero for the animals who dresses for the occasion :-P Not to mention the fact we think this poster will look hot in your environmental/animal club headquarters.

All of the entries would have made worthy winners. So if you didn't win, you don't need to miss out. Why not reward yourself with a set of all 3 of our shiny new posters from the Unleashed shop.

Help Dolphins and Score Movie Tix!

You learn something new every day... unfortunately!

So I thought by now I was pretty aware of international animal cruelty, but a new documentary I saw last week really shocked me. The Cove, which is being launched in Australia next week, exposes the mass slaughter of Dolphins in a little Japanese town called Taiji.

"Mass dolphin slaughter?? What the!!" Yes, that's right, each year, starting on the 1st of September a whopping 23,000 terrified dolphins are herded into a secret cove. They are netted in, unable to escape and are slowly speared or stabbed to death!

And why haven't we heard of this before? Because the Japanese Government has gone to painstaking efforts to keep the slaughter a secret, even from it's own people. Dolphin meat is being labelled and sold as other types of seafood and the vast majority of Japanese citizens have no idea this is happening, or that they are eating it!

International dolphin expert and former trainer Richard O'Barry has gone to incredible efforts to expose this terrible secret. In creating The Cove he took an elite team of scientists, filmmakers and free-divers to Taiji. He hopes the international outrage The Cove will create will put a stop to this barbaric practice... HOPEFULLY before this September's slaughter begins.

So what can you do? Fortunately, as Australians we're in a unique position to help! Taiji just so happens to be the Sister-City of Broome in WA. By putting pressure on Broome to sever it's ties with Taiji we will expose the slaughter and shame Japan. The good news is that most Japanese people see dolphins the same way westerners do as intelligent, graceful animals who should never be hurt or eaten but whilst the slaughter remains a secret sadly it will continue.

[UPDATE: Some great news! After a flood of letters, Broome Councilors met over the weekend and decided to sever their ties with the Japanese town of Taiji.

We still have a couple of 2-for-1 passes to giveaway to see The Cove (opening this week)! If you want to score yourself a pass then please write to Broome to thank them for taking a stand against the dolphin slaughter in Japan and severing their ties with Taiji. Then leave a comment below to let us know you've written.

Thanks to everyone who helped in this campaign!]

Earlier in the week we appealed to the chocolate admirers out there with the promise of free Constant Craving Truffles. So began the hunt for Unleashed's most worthy chocoholic. But sheesh you didn't make it easy on us the competition was fierce! After reading the responses from so many worthy candidates, we were so overwhelmed by the heartfelt pleas for chocolate that we realised we couldn't choose just one winner...

So it's time to congratulate our two most worthy chocoholics, Matt.Y, who promises to give the chockies to his Mum (we want photographic evidence, Matt), and chaha33, the super-keen-vegan-cocoa-bean-eating-poetry-machine! Congratulations Matt.Y and chacha33 your bundle of 10 Constant Craving Truffles are zooming from the Unleashed office to your doorstep right now! But that's not all. We've also thrown in some free stickers for good measure :-)

In truth we believe everybody deserves chocolate, and really there's no reason to miss out. If all this chocolate-talk has you salivating at your keyboard, then follow me to the Unleashed shop where you can pick up your own bag of truffles for just $10 (or $20 if you're really serious). All the money raised through the shop goes towards helping animals and fighting animal cruelty.

And just for you lovely folks, postage is free :-)

I can hardly contain my excitement as I write this... There has been so much chatter about dairy-free chocolate on the forum recently that we thought we would share the love even further and give away some vegan chocolate.

That's right FREE CHOCOLATE!

In fact, we've all gone a little chocolate-mad with two new chocolate gift packs for sale in the Unleashed shop. And believe me, there's a good reason they call them 'Constant Craving' truffles. If you want to impress someone, I promise you, the only thing you'll ever need to do is get them some of these...

Each pack includes five dreamy varieties including Jaffa Delight, Coffee, Scorched Almond, Coconut, and Apricot Dream.

Ok ok ok, back to the free chocolate :-) If you want to get your hands on free pack of these melt-in-your-mouth truffles simply leave a comment below and tell us why you deserve them. We'll send the most worthy candidate a chock-filled gift to satiate those constant cravings...

Update: most worthy chocoholics announced! Click here to find out who won.
