5 mothers who only want 1 thing this Mother's Day

These 5 mothers all want the same thing this Mother's Day:

She wants to see her baby grow up

Cows are well known for the strong bonds formed between mother and calf.

She wants to see her baby grow up

One study found that the strong bond between mother and calf was formed in as little as five minutes.

She wants to see her baby grow up

In a natural setting, cows will drink from their mother for several months, up to a year.

She wants to see her baby grow up

Mother cows have been reported to bellow and call out for their calves if they're separated.

She wants to see her baby grow up

But she won't get to.

To produce milk for humans, a dairy cow must keep giving birth to calves, usually every year. Her calves are normally taken away in the first 24 hours of their life, so that the milk she is producing to feed her newborn can be bottled for human consumption.

This video shows a calf being separated from his mother on the first day of his life. It's clearly distressing for her, it's distressing for him and it may be distressing for you to watch so please give it a miss if you feel you don't need to watch it.

There are more than 1 million cows in the Australian dairy industry today -- every single one is a mother. If they could have one thing this Mother's Day, I can guess what it would be ...

As long as the demand for dairy milk continues, mother cows and calves will continue to suffer as a result. The most powerful thing you can do to help dairy cows is to make the switch to dairy-free milk. Do something nice for the mother of another this Sunday 10 May and try a dairy-free alternative. There are so many delicious dairy-free options these days it's never been easier.

If you're ready to help mother cows (and their calves) every day and ditch dairy for good, sign the pledge today.

P.S. Wondering what happens to the male calves after they're taken from their mothers? This video, filmed in Victoria, shows the sad fate for unwanted calves, called "bobby calves". Warning: some graphic footage.

5 awesome mums of the animal kingdom

5 awesome mums of the animal kingdom

There's some pretty kick ass mothers out there in the animal kingdom and some of them could use a little helping hand. So here are 5 awesome animal mums and how you can show them some love:

520-seals.jpg

1. Harp seals
Harp seal mums will spend the first 12 days of their pup's life feeding the bub and protecting them from danger without eating anything themselves! During this time, the pup will rapidly pack on the kilos while mum dutifully fades away.

But, once mum has to leave the ice to find food for herself, her pup is in extreme danger of being killed by hunters for his fur. Click here to find out more and how you can take action for baby seals.

2. Pigs
Did your mum ever sing you lullabies? Mother pigs have been known to 'sing' to their piglets :) This is believed to help let the babies know when her milk is flowing so that they can feed.

Sadly, mother pigs in factory farms are confined to tiny cages called 'farrowing crates' where they are barely able to move, let alone interact with their young :( You can help put an end to this suffering. Be a friend to pigs and take them off your plate.

3. Koalas
Koalas carry their babies around on their backs for six months. SIX MONTHS! I hope that baby koala gets his mum a massage voucher every year for Mother's Day for the rest of his life.

If your mum is pretty special, why not tell her with an awesome pressie that she'll love and will help to create a kinder world for ALL mothers :) Click here to shop cruelty-free gifts.

4. Orcas
Orca mums stay with their children for life! Personally, I'm not sure how I'd go living with my mum forever but it certainly shows a strong bond between mother orcas and their calves. In fact, female killer whales live a lot longer than males (up to 90 years!) and some research suggests that this is due to their never ending desire to care for their offspring. Nawww.

Knowing this, one of the saddest parts of watching the documentary Blackfish for me, was seeing baby whales separated from their mothers. It may be distressing to see these whales grieving for their calves but fortunately you can help end this cruelty by not supporting marine parks and deciding to never attend one.

5. Cows
Cows have very strong bonds with their calves. Like orcas, cows have been known to frantically call and search for their calves when they're separated. And most calves in the dairy industry are separated from their mums within days of being born.

A New York vet tells the story of one mother cow who proved the strength of her love, when she hid one of her calves after giving birth to twins. The vet suggests that she remembered losing her previous four calves, and probably guessed that if the farmer got his hands on them both, they would would be taken from her again :(

This intelligent and thoughtful mother managed to keep her baby hidden for 11 days before her secret was discovered. What was the giveaway? The farmer couldn't milk her because of course her calf was drinking all the milk she produced.

Sadly, like most mother cows in the dairy industry, she too was separated from her calf. All because her milk was to be bottled and sold for humans to drink. BUT you can help protect calves and their mums from this cruel cycle by giving dairy the flick. Click here to make the pledge today.

There are so many dairy free milk alternatives these days, that I'm like a kid in a candy store at the supermarket. Bonsoy is my fave in coffee, but almond milk tastes great on my cereal. And the best thing about them is that no cows lost their calves for these cartons of milk. Do you have a favourite dairy-free milk?

I'll give you a hint - it's THIS Sunday, and it involves the person who probably buys your undies. That's right, Mother's Day is almost here!

I'm going to assume that you spoil your mum every day of the year, but this weekend if you want to really spoil her then consider getting her a gift that will help mums in the animal world too. The money you spend on these gifts is used to help mother cows, hens and pigs, who all too often have their babies taken away and never get the chance to display their natural mothering instincts.

Pure Gaisha
Lip Balm
$10
Pure Gaisha
Solid Perfume
$19
Bunny Symbolic Adoption
$27
French Pear
Soy Candle
$44

If money is a bit tight at the moment, then never fear -- maybe you could make mum a cruelty-free breaky. Here's some suggestions in order of difficulty.

So there you have it. Mother's Day sorted! All you need to do now is make mum a card, wake up in time to make breakfast (11 am isn't going to cut it!) and remember to clean the dishes ... and the free undies will continue to roll in for another year.

One, two, three..? How about thousands!

That might sound like a tall order, but every year Animals Australia finds a new way to spoil your Mum, whilst also helping out the thousands of mother animals who are locked up inside factory farms.

This year Animals Australia has hooked up with 'Growing Gifts' to create what I think is simply the most awesome Mother's Day gift anyone could buy ... a bundle of goodies that includes a real live lemon-scented tea tree! I just wish I was a Mum so someone would buy this for me! :-)

Looks preeeeetty swish, huh? The real value in this gift however is the bit you don't see in the picture. Each 'Growing Gift' helps to fund important campaigns to end factory farming, like this one, this one and this one.

Pigs are one of the smartest animals on the planet -- as smart as dogs and 3 year old children! Yet in factory farms mother pigs are locked up in tiny crates so small they can't even turn around. Pretty shocking, right? Well someone needs to stand up for these amazing animals. And that someone is us. So if you haven't worked out what to give Mum for Mother's Day yet, then maybe this is it!

You can order the small tree gift for $40, but if you don't have enough dough saved up for that then here are some other gorgeous gift ideas that aren't so expensive, but will also help out the animals:

White Tea & Ginger Solid Perfume from Pure Gaisha $15 Perfect Potion Vanilla Bean Lip Balm $12 Wild Frangipani Natural Soy Candle $22 Christine's Ark (Paperback) $30

If you don't have a credit card, and can't borrow one, then don't panic -- just call our office pixies on a weekday on (03) 9329 6333 and they'll help you out. And while you're planning the perfect day-off for Mum, here are a few winning breakfast-in-bed recipes that are sure to get you out of cleaning your room for at least a week:

So now you know what I'm planning for my Mum this Mother's Day. What are your plans?
