Its one of those things you really hope we would have worked out by now... Whales and dolphins: better off frolicking about the ocean than being bludgeoned to death at the waters edge. Right?? Sadly, in some parts of the world this type of brutal end is still a very real threat for these intelligent marine mammals.

Do you just LOVE summer, enjoy chillaxing on the beach and catching some waves but HATE the way your drink always dribbles condensation all over your hand, and warms to an unpleasant temperature WAY before youve reached the bottom?

I know I do. Aside from the heatwaves, my wilting vegetable garden and sunburn, thats pretty much my 1 complaint about the Aussie sun. Well we cant do a lot about the heat, but now there IS a way to manage all your drinking needs in style...

This Olympic Snowboarder Saves Lives

So the Winter Olympics are coming to a close. I dont know about you, but I keep watching The Games thinking how much fun it would be to try some of those sports out. I think Ive decided the skeleton is for me :P

Anyway, with one very impressive run down the halfpipe and a gold medal around her neck, Torah Bright has become a household name. Not to mention scoring herself a place on a stamp. Top marks to her.

But I wanted to take a moment to tip my hat to the girl who won the silver medal in the halfpipe, Hannah Teter. This warmhearted winter Olympian is a passionate vegetarian, and has said: My plantbased diet has opened up more doors to being an athlete. Its a whole other level that Im elevating to. I stopped eating animals about a year ago, and its a new life. I feel like a new person, a new athlete.

The Winter Olympic Games: Its an event scribbled in bold on every Australians calendar, counted down to, daybyday, from the closing ceremony 4 years ago. For 2 weeks straight, Australians sit glued to the television, with little on their mind other than the absolute excitement that is curling, being beamed from the other (and much colder) side of the world.

OK! So maybe its not! But the location of The Games this year offers us, and more importantly animals, a potentially life saving opportunity.

It's Never Been Easier to Lose the Leather

One thing Im really looking forward to this year is commencing work as a paramedic (Dont worry, Im not leaving Unleashed. Not while there are still animals to save!), although Ill be honest, I was a little wary that I may be forced to wear those leather boots you see them walking around in.

I dont know why, maybe its the overwhelming feeling that you get when youre starting a new job, but I was hesitant to ask the recruitment lady whether an alternative to leather boots could be provided. So I nervously pondered on how I was going to word the email, and then it hit me: if I dont cause them any inconvenience, then it should be easy as pie. So I offered to find an alternative to leather boots at my own expense.

Kill the meat addiction, not camels!

Some time back, the UN released a very revealing report that revealingly revealed that our habit of eating meat is contributing more to global warming than all the worlds trains, planes and automobiles combined. Yep they say a whopping 18 percent of all the worlds greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock.

It seems that back home our pollies might have missed this memo. While other countries are looking at ways to ween their citizens off meat, yesterday our Federal opposition spokesperson for agriculture (that is, the guy whos supposed to know a lot about agriculture), said he reckoned that killing all the feral camels in Australia would be a great way to help save the planet. WTF!?

Animal circuses have long wanted us to believe that exotic animals that are forced to perform under the big top do so because they love to perform. They wanted us to believe that circus animals are well cared for, and learn those unnatural and demeaning tricks through reward systems and not through violence, and fear of punishment.

But seriously, how DO you get a wild 3.5 tonne animal to abandon its natural behaviours in favour of standing on her head in front of noisy crowds and gawking children? Jumps Racing Put Down in Victoria!

Today marks the end of an era in horse racing. Or should I say an error! Yes, definitely an error forcing horses to jump over hurdles at full speed was always a bad idea. But the good news this morning is that Racing Victoria has announced they will cease to run jumps races at the end of the 2010 season! sigh of relief

This decision will spare horses the miserable fate of broken legs, broken necks, and other injuries from falls during jumps races. So after a brilliant campaign by the Coalition for the Protection of Race Horses, the racing industry has finally faced up to the fact that jumps racing is cruel (not that an industry that kills thousands of horses every year just for being too slow has much to be proud of!).

Im so thrilled! Just think, more than 1 million Aussies saw the truth about Australias pig industry. Many will have never thought about where pork, bacon and ham come from before. And now they know that animal cruelty laws fail to protect animals raised for food, and that these profit driven animal industries arent looking out for the wellbeing of their animals theyre looking out for their wallets.
