End Faroe Islands' Bloody Whale & Dolphin Kill!

Whales and dolphins: better off frolicking about the ocean than being bludgeoned to death at the waters edge. Right?? Sadly, in some parts of the world this type of brutal end is still a very real threat for these intelligent marine mammals.

No doubt when people realise that the animal products they consume are literally killing them, it will be a headline. Anyway, <a hrefhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?vFKYPSPUQvr4 target_blank title>this is the story of Rocco a meatlovin cowboy from Arizona who was literally eating himself into a grave.

[More after the jump]

I know I do. Aside from the heatwaves, my wilting vegetable garden and sunburn, thats pretty much my 1 complaint about the Aussie sun. Well we cant do a lot about the heat, but now there IS a way to manage all your drinking needs in style...

This Olympic Snowboarder Saves Lives

So the Winter Olympics are coming to a close. I dont know about you, but I keep watching The Games thinking how much fun it would be to try some of those sports out. I think Ive decided the <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/images/blogs/skeleton.jpg>skeleton is for me :P

Anyway, with one very impressive run down the halfpipe and a gold medal around her neck, Torah Bright has become a household name. Not to mention scoring herself a place on a <a hrefhttp://www.news.com.au/breakingnews/winterolympicsgoldmedallisttorahbrightgetsownpostagestamp/storye6frfku01225833867305>stamp. Top marks to her.

<img srchttp://www.unleashed.org.au/images/blogs/hannah_teter.jpg alignright>
But I wanted to take a moment to tip my hat to the girl who won the silver medal in the halfpipe, Hannah Teter. This warmhearted winter Olympian is a <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_veg/>passionate vegetarian, and has said: My plantbased diet has opened up more doors to being an athlete. Its a whole other level that Im elevating to. I stopped eating animals about a year ago, and its a new life. I feel like a new person, a new athlete.

For 2 weeks straight, Australians sit glued to the television, with little on their mind other than the absolute excitement that is curling, being beamed from the other (and much colder) side of the world.

OK! So maybe its not! But the location of The Games this year offers us, and more importantly animals, a potentially life saving opportunity.

It's Never Been Easier to Lose the Leather

One thing Im really looking forward to this year is commencing work as a paramedic (Dont worry, Im not leaving Unleashed. Not while there are still animals to save!), although Ill be honest, I was a little wary that I may be forced to wear those <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_faux_yourself/leather.php>leather boots you see them walking around in.

I dont know why, maybe its the overwhelming feeling that you get when youre starting a new job, but I was hesitant to ask the recruitment lady whether an alternative to leather boots could be provided. So I nervously pondered on how I was going to word the email, and then it hit me: if I dont cause them any inconvenience, then it should be easy as pie. So I offered to find an <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_faux_yourself/what_to_wear.php>alternative to leather boots at my own expense.

Yep they say a whopping 18 percent of all the worlds greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock.

It seems that back home our pollies might have missed this memo. They wanted us to believe that circus animals are well cared for, and learn those unnatural and demeaning tricks through reward systems and not through violence, and fear of punishment.

But seriously, how DO you get a wild 3.5 tonne animal to abandon its natural behaviours in favour of standing on her head in front of noisy crowds and gawking children? The late former Ringling Bros. elephant handlerturnedwhistleblower Sam Haddock shines some light on the methods used to break the spirits of baby elephants at the Ringling conservation center (elephant breeding and training centre) in Florida:

Ive been on a whirlwind trip across the country with no time to spare between writing and giving <a hrefhttp://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid2959442&ampid189158599126>important letters to supermarket managers, passing out <a hrefhttp://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid2916621&ampid189158599126&ampfbid190231384126>info packs to shoppers, and hugging all the <a hrefhttp://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid2920815&ampid189158599126&ampfbid190925429126>friendly miniature humans who stop me on my path!

Jumps Racing Put Down in Victoria!

Today marks the end of an era in horse racing. Or should I say an error! Yes, definitely an error forcing horses to jump over hurdles at full speed was always a bad idea. But the good news this morning is that Racing Victoria has announced they will cease to run jumps races at the end of the 2010 season! sigh of relief

This decision will spare horses the miserable fate of broken legs, broken necks, and other injuries from falls during <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/blog/jumps_racing>jumps races. So after a brilliant campaign by the Coalition for the Protection of Race Horses, the racing industry has finally faced up to the fact that jumps racing is cruel (not that an industry that kills thousands of horses every year just for being too slow has much to be proud of!).

60 Minutes: Behind the Scenes Footage

Did you catch Animals Australias <a hrefhttp://www.animalsaustralia.org/features/60minutesthehiddentruth.php>piggery investigation on 60 Minutes on Sunday? If not dont worry, you can still see the segment on the <a hrefhttp://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id973831>60 Minutes website.

Im so thrilled! Just think, more than 1 million Aussies saw <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/animals/pigs.php>the truth about Australias pig industry. Many will have never thought about where pork, bacon and ham come from before. And now they know that animal cruelty laws fail to protect animals raised for food, and that these profit driven animal industries arent looking out for the wellbeing of their animals theyre looking out for their wallets.

And one thing I love about <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_faux_yourself/what_to_wear.php target_self title>faux fashion is that it not only looks hot, its a great way to show others that you <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_faux_yourself/leather.php target_self title>dont need to be cruel to be <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/change_the_world/go_faux_yourself/what_to_wear.php target_self title>cool (and in fact theres nothing less attractive than someone draped in the skin of a dead animal!).

[More after the jump]

We're On TV!

How many times have you wished that the cruelty of factory farming would be exposed on national TV. I know I have ... often. And this week Im super excited because this wish has just <a hrefhttp://www.animalsaustralia.org/tv/factoryfarming/watch_unleashed.php>come true!

We have just launched our first ever <a hrefhttp://www.animalsaustralia.org/tv/factoryfarming/watch_unleashed.php>TV ad campaign and our sights are set squarely on exposing the cruelty of the <a hrefhttp://www.unleashed.org.au/animals/pigs.php>pig industry. So check it out:
