This is what happens when people learn the truth about where dogs come from

This is what happens when people learn the truth about where dogs come from

My workmate Damien and I recently took to the streets of Melbourne with a camera and a one minute video. We asked people to watch the video and filmed their reactions. Here's what happened:

How would you have reacted to the truth that most puppies in pet shops and online come from horrible puppy factories like the ones in the video? I know what my first thought was -- did my family dog Chelsea come from a place like this? If you're thinking the same thing, you can take the quiz to find out.

We got Chelsea from the Trading Post when I was in Year 5. I had never even heard about puppy factories then and I probably wouldn't have believed it even if I had. I hate to picture Chelsea's mum living in a concrete pen, not getting any of the love that we showered Chelsea with. I can't ever really know what life was like for her, but I now know that I have the power to stop other dogs from being treated like breeding machines. And so do you.

By getting your next pet from a shelter or rescue, you can make sure that your money is not going to a cruel puppy factory, you'll be saving a life, and you'll get a lifetime of love guaranteed :)

Shelter dogs and cats make just as good pets as ones bought from pet shops and online. In fact, in one experiment in Brazil, shoppers couldn't even tell the difference. [Watch it here.]

Have you known an awesome rescue dog? Tell me about them in the comments below :)

Puppy factories exposed on national TV!

Puppy factories exposed on national TV!

It's an exciting time here at Animals Australia because we have just launched our biggest puppy factory campaign EVER! Dogs in puppy factories will finally have a voice on national TV and on bus stops in Melbourne and Sydney.

Watch the 1 minute TV ad: [There's some sad footage of dogs in puppy factories in this vid so please don't watch if you think it will upset you.]

I can remember the very first time I learnt that most dogs sold online and in pet shops come from places where their mothers may spend their whole lives locked up and never know what it feels like to be loved. I was shocked. And saddened. The most shocking part -- it's actually legal to force dogs to live like this.

I swore that I would never ever support puppy factories.

The best thing you can do to help end puppy factories is to adopt your future dog from a shelter. That way you not only give a dog in need the love he or she deserves, but you also help reduce the demand for puppies to be bred (which is what puppy factories thrive on).

Be part of history

Be part of history

With every historical movement there is a group leading the charge -- the rally-goers, the protesters, the bra-burners ... the ones who speak out and make a change for the better.

One day, I'm going to write a blog that says factory farming in Australia is officially extinct. Truth. We are getting closer and closer to that day every day. And you can be part of it.

Thousands have already joined the movement to free hens from cages so small they can't stretch their wings ... to free pigs from stalls so small they can't even turn around ... and to end chickens being fattened so fast that they can't even stand up.

And flying the flag for this historical shift is one brave little pig:

I'm excited to tell you that this little pig will be flying across televisions in millions of homes across Australia. On her journey so far she has helped inspire everyone from huge supermarket chains to the little old lady down the street to take steps to help end factory farming.

Just imagine what she will achieve as she is seen by millions more people on their TV screens ...

Change is coming ... and being a part of it couldn't be easier. It's as simple as refusing factory farmed products, eating fewer animal products or going meat-free. How will you take a stand for animals today?

Afterwards, tell us what you thought of the show in the comments below!

Live Exports Exposed in The West Australian!

Live Exports Exposed in The West Australian!

If you're in WA and open up The West Australian today, then make sure you turn to page 14. 'Cause we've put in an open letter from Animals Australia about live exports.

If you've seen the footage of how our animals are treated at the other end, then you've got to wonder... Is Australia really so strapped for cash that we'd turn a blind eye and keep sending animals to endure such blatant animal cruelty?

Last week's story on the 7:30 Report led to an overwhelming public response - with people outraged that our governement would let this cruelty continue.

If you haven't already, please take action to call on our government to get off the sheep's back for once and end live exports.

Don't Miss The 7:30 Report Tonight!

UPDATE! If you missed the 7.30 report, watch it online here!

Animals Australia's latest investigation into live animal exports to the Middle East is going to be front and centre on The 7.30 Report tonight (ABC1 at 7.30pm duh!)

Tune in to see undeniable proof that this trade is cruel, with first hand accounts from our lead investigator, Lyn White.

This is an important opportunity to influence public and government opinion. Footage aired from Animals Australia's 5th investigation led to such big public outrage that the trade of sheep to Egypt was banned! So we need as many people as possible to be watching tonight! Please make sure you encourage everyone you know to tune in.

For starters, please update your Facebook/Twitter status to let everyone know they should check it out. Then make sure to tell all your family and friends about it.

After the program tonight, we need people to make their voice heard. So please speak up for the animal by clicking here to email the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture to ask that they do the right thing and ban the live animal export trade for good! (And while you're at it, you could always post a link to that action on Facebook and Twitter too!)
