Those are two pictures I took of monkeys when I went to visit the Melbourne Zoo a few months ago. I don't know about you but they sure as heck don't look too happy. What are your thoughts and opinions on zoos?

Personally I don't like the idea, and that if anything we should be trying to fix the problem OUT THERE... but then again, where else can they go? sad
if u dont like zoos why did u give them $$$$ ?
Well, all the money given to the zoo pays for their food and other requirements. i'm not saying going to the zoo was a good thing, but if no one ever gave them any money their animals would die i guess..

I agree with Francis, also, open range zoos are okay.
I don't think by sanctuaries Francis meant any kind of zoo. I think he means a place that looks after rescued animals that can't stay in their natural environment due to human interruption and does the best to keep them in a place closest to their natural habitat. Not a bigger kind of zoo such a Werribe Park... maybe you mean the same thing as him anyway.

As far as I'm concerned a sanctuary is somewhere that is run _for_ the animals (this can include breeding programs etc. if done in a considered way)  and not for profit. Unfortunately -and although werribee zoo may look almost, well, 'free range - it's not, it's a business. Animals are bought and sold as commodities. Yes they do some good, but they certainly move us no closer towards animal liberation.

I don't think Zoos are lacking costumers and I'm sure there's a lot of people within Melbourne Zoo that make a huge profit, they don't need our money, and neither do those animals.

However I had the dilemma of wanting to go to the Zoo to take photos for my Studio Arts folio based on humans using animals. I didn't want to give them money but I could have gotten many photos pertinent to the theme of my folio. I didn't end up going but would it really have been wrong of me to go if I did?

I don't like zoos - in my personal opinion, the cages are too small, the animals look like they are bored out of their brains, and everyone seems to under-estimate them. Like how people are so excited when a gorilla does something remotly smart. Uh, hello? Apparently we are related to them, so of course they're gonna be a bit smart.

I remember going to the zoo ages ago, i think in grade 6.

even though i didn't even know what a vegetarian really was, let alone had any idea that the animals rights movement existed, seeing the great apes confined to their moat-surrounded enclosure was one of the saddest things i had seen at that point in my life. it really is despicable that we confine such intelligent animals to such limited enclosures, thinking they'll be happy with people yelling at them day-after-day to "do something."

i despise the fact that any animal is kept in a zoo, and made money off of. but doing it to great apes really soars to the heights of arrogance on the part of hummanity.

francis said it best;
zoos - bad
sanctuaries - good.

There's a surprisingly blurry line though. Or perhaps an unsurprising one.

The monkeys in that photo do look sad but when I went to Melbourne zoo last week with my family the gorillas were playing and were throwing a ball around, so they looked pretty happy to me. I'm not sure where I sit with zoos...I don't agree or disagree with them, I more go on the individual zoo. Some are just disgusting and some are actually really good. I do think Melbourne zoo has alot of enclosures that are just bad and I hate seeing them but they are upgrading them. Melbourne zoo has rescued animals aswell, all their seals but one were rescued and one of their gorillas was rescued from poaches.

I'm not sure how important zoos are to conservation but from what I gather they play a pretty important roll in conservation and education. Also letting people see these animals up close and in the flesh may inspire them to do something to help them, I'm not saying everyone that goes may feel that way but even if a small percent come away with that feeling, isn't that good?

But on the other hand it would be better for the animals to be in their natural habitat. Also the amount of money that is spent on keeping the zoo running and the amount of money it costs to upgrade enclosures could be used to conserve land or pay for anti poaching patrols, ect.

At the moment I'd say I'm fine with zoos as long as their enclosures are excellent and they have the animals interest as their main priority, but I may change my mind.

I'm buying a book that's called "The Politics of Zoos" to learn more.
