The amount of cruelty that gos on behind closed doors in zoos is unthinkable.
How do you know that?
Some zoos are bad and don't care about their animals but I don't think all of them are like that and I think the majority of the keepers love their animals and would treat them well.

I think they only reason animals should be kept in captivity is if they simply cannot be re-released because of injury, over-dependence on humans, extreme danger of extinction, etc. But they shouldn't be kept in the type of enclosures Melbourne zoo has for example.. They skimp on space & foliage to allow the public to have a better view of the animals so even if they wanted to get away from people, they couldn't.. As people have said, sanctuaries focusing more on educating the public & helping with conservation etc rather than making a profit are more acceptable to me.

Does anyone know if Healesville Sanctuary is okay, in terms of animal care & donating proceeds etc? I haven't been there in years but I'm going with a few friends soon, don't really want to pay for it if they are keeping the animals in 8X10 enclosures or something  rolleyes

I went not long ago, I think Healesville is good, the enclosures are good and I like how they only have native animals and they focus alot on rescuing and rehabilitating animals. I think alot of the animals on display are rescued ones.

Zoos have come a long way! They used to just be an animal inside a cage just big enough for it to stand in. Nowadays zoos actually replicate their habitat and eating habits.
If not for zoos, alot of animals that we see today wouldn't exist.
For instance, sumatran tigers, there's a sad existance of 400 of them in the wild today. Or Asian Elephants.

Today zoos act as a conservation effort, and help to educate people on the effects of poaching. They run breeding programs, and some even take in injured animals and run rehabilitate and release programs.
I have yet to see a zoo without a donation fund to help wildlife conservation or an endangered species.

I know I used to call my local zoo if there was a snake in my yard which I thought would be harmed due to my cat, they would come out and release them in a safer area.

What a load, zoo keepers think of the animals that they look after as their friends, they develop a companionship with the animals, and they trust eachother.

Zoos definitely aren't good places.

Unless they're sancturaries, they're run to make a profit; they're a business. Afterall, it does cost money to go in, doesn't it?

Look at the enclosures the animals are kept in. Go stand in your backyard and see how long it takes before you get bored.

Elephants are known to walk miles and miles everyday in the wild, but look at the ones kept in the zoo. They're kept in places to scale with a human and a football oval.

The issue of primates especially disgusts me. Go to the zoo and see them. They're constantly heckled by children, and told to "move" or "do something" constantly by the children's parents.

Yes, it's not as bad as confining a pig to sow stall, but confining any and all animals to an artificial environment (especially one where they're subjected to public's taunts) is certainly far (very, very far) from ideal.

Most people open a company to make money, if you don't make money what help can you be? Even not for profit organisations make money, not for profit obviously. They really aren't that bad.

Exactly - key word being: company.

Profits from zoos don't go towards the animals, they go towards CEO salaries and executives' bonuses.

Why should we tolerate zoos at all when we have examples of sanctuaries working (where the animal's needs are the primary concern, not profit), such as Edgar's Mission?

Let's work for what's BEST for the animals - not second best. If we see a problem in the world, why not change it?
