Stand your ground! no one should make you do what you dont want to do. Firstly, write to your principal or school authority to see what your school's dissection policy is, if you don't like it, explain to them your concerns, and they probably haven't even thought about it from the animal's perspective. People will respect you for it. Good luck!
DON'T DISSECT!!!
I was told that dissecting wasn't done in schools anymore cos of the crueltyness of it all, that was obviously a mistake .... and it got me really excited too. oh well.
but yeah, don't dissect. surely they can not force you to if you tell them about your dilemma.
i am doing biology too and i'm well aware that i may be confronted with the issue of cutting open an animal (though that is not likely, because i go to a once-a-week distance-ed school)
but on the off-chance that i do, i will simply tell them im vego and cannot do it. the only other time i had to dissect anything i wasn't actually there that week , jus my luck, hey?
Year 8 ?
Gosh im in year 12 and still dont know what i want to do yet ..
I wanted to be a vet when i was little, i think every kid does but i have to agree with nelly .. it would be to sad to have to put an animal down, even if it was the right thing to do i just couldnt make myself do it
With the disection thing i do biology and i havent had to disect anything, And they cant fail you because you didnt disect, its not like a core componet, well its not at my school anyway
And also i know you need an UAI/ATAR of 98 just to get into a course. Thats like more then you need to be a docter :S
lol i wanted to be a vet too but now i dont know what i want to be

yeah it seems like everyone wanted to be a vet ... i did too, but then i realised that i might have to actually put down animals and cut them open

Right, so many people have wanted to be a vet at some time. (myself included) I think more people want to be vets when they're younger then doctors. But there's probbbably more people that wanted to be doctors who follow through with it.
In high school you can usually be exempt from the dissection if you wish to.
When you choose a tertiary institution to actually commence studying veterinary studies, you can research how the animals are sourced. There have been exposes recently where different education systems were using strays that had been killed for education purposes only. This has since stopped from what I know. You can research it when it comes time.
Sometimes they will be animals who have died, or who would have been put down anyway due to lack of funds at a pound or something.
It's a devastating fact that this happens, however if you can suck it up and get through the system, in the end you will be a veterinarian, in the industry, who actively promotes a NON-HYPOCRITICAL cruelty-free lifestyle. The fact that you could educate other vets and people in the industry once you're a vet yourself is REALLY great! If you can put in the hard yards and deal with the emotional side of it all for a few years, in the end you will have achieved a great triumph for animals. Vegan vet = potential for big impact.
I suggest you try some work experience at a vet clinic. It will show you how things really are and you should be able to see surgery and the things you have to decide on.
I wanted to become a vet for a very long time but did not make the marks I needed so I became a vet nurse. I worked as a vet nurse for a couple of years but developed anxiety problems and panic attacks from the stress. So now I am studying psychology and social sciences.
About dissection: I am of the opinion that currently there is no replacement for it. Looking at graphs and images will not teach you how to perform basic surgery skills or to deal with the situation where you have an animal in front of you that is opened up. A software program will not teach you the hand eye co-ordination needed to make surgical incisions or clean up wounds.
I understand that the animals used in dissecting are bred and killed for scientific purpose, however they are going to be bred and killed anyway. The dissection process is the last thing that happens to these animals. They are usually victims of "research". While I don't agree with it, you are using "left-overs" (sorry to use such an awful term, I can't think of another word.
If you want to avoid dissecting, I would think the only way to learn it is to do work experience and be hands-on. Try vet clinics, animal rescue centres, and WIRES.
