Well, just saw on the news a 59 year old man who drowned eight of his cats and then bashed their heads with a claw hammer to ensure they were dead avoid jail even though he pleaded guilty. Don't know what kind of message this sends to people are cruel to animals and have no idea how someone could do this.
It is also sad how it shocks so many people that this man did this when thousands of defenceless animals are being slaughtered everyday.
ahh, society..
no thats so mean, once someone ran over my cat then put it down a drain, it was so sad,how can people be mean to animals, i can understand eating meat when you dont know how much suffering the animals go through, but if you actually hurt an animal yourself your a horrible person and yeah i hate it how people think its so bad hurting a cat or a dog when they can go home and eat a massive stake
sickening what people think they can get away with.
on a positive though, opportunities like this are always great to be an advocate for animals.
for example, you could make the connection between the cats being bludgeoned and ask the question of how it's any different in the case of a pig having its throat cut. and then you could lead on to the fact "that at least these cats were able to turn around during their life" etc etc.
i think turning situations like these on their heads (if - i stress the word 'if' - done effectively) are great opportunities for vegan outreach.
I think that changes to the law should be considered, like prosecuting an offender like this for more than one count of aggravated cruelty, seeing as how multiple cats were involved.
Why wasn't he prosecuted for eight seperate cruelty charges if eight cats died?
Exactly. Would it have made a difference though? Obviously melbourne courts/ australian courts don't take animal cruelty very seriously. The police officer that was prosecuting against the man was very upset he got off jail though. Which is good to see i guess..
There's something wrong in some peoples heads, seriously.
If they brought in serious time for this sort of abuse, maybe people would think twice before hurting an animal... as sad as that sounds.
IF you neglected your cihld, you would have to face court and usually have them taken off you, if you killed your child, or ANYONE, you would have to face court and jail time.
Murder is murder whether it's commited against an animal or human, the charges should be the same.
