congratulations!
I had this same dilemma with my mother when I decided to become a vegetarian. Although I hated that she had a problem with it (especially when I became a vegan) it's because our parents grew up learning that you had to eat meat to be healthy, and drink milk for strong teeth and bones. Maybe it might help your cause to talk to a dietitian (Who supports vegetarianism/veganism) with your mother, because I think the main reason parents have such a problem with it is because they want your body to get everything it needs.

Do your research, tell your parents why you feel you need to do this, and how important it is to you. It won't hurt their pocket, and it would be healthy for them to eat a few meatless meals every week anyway. Parents are always supportive if things are put the right way, once they learn that it's actually benefitial to your health (if you do it properly) then I don't see why they would have a problem with it.

Good luck!

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I am quite interested. Just the trailer on the website was powerful enough. I watched it quite a few times. You kinda pick up on more and more detail as you go. The last time I watched it I noticed that the SKINNED wolf? head that they zoomed in on... blinked. I had to take a break it upset/distressed/disturbed/disgusted me so much. So horrible.

I wish wish wish people would watch this. I posted the link on my fb but I don't think anyone looked at all. sad

Ignorance is bliss. Blah.

Oh congrats so much on vegetarianism! Great choice. happy Good on you for taking responsibility and watching the movie too. I think some things to help with your parents would be to show them you've done your research.
Maybe make a list of good veggie food so they see it isn't quite so alien, deprived and weird.
I started making my lasagnes vegetarian before I made the change, purely for health reasons and because roasted vegetable is delish.
As for health issues, you can maybe make a little fact sheet with a list of what food gives you what what nutrients. It might help them see that a diet full of multicoloured veg, nuts, wholegrains etc is really a benefit and nothing to be worried about.

Good luck. ecstatic

Yes. The movie was horrific. It really did open my eyes as they showed EVERYTHING! I never really had a problem with eating meat but now i see how horribly the animals are treated just to cut costs ECT.  during the movie i was crying and i had to keep taking breaks as at times it was just too much to watch.

thanks for the help by the way happy

Ah, good old Earthlings. I've heard it described as a vegan magic bullet before, and so far it seems fairly accurate! I recently suggested it to 2 of my friends that had recently gone vegetarian, and are now vegan.

I dont think it's a bad idea to show them at all. Just keep in mind that we don't all think the same, so don't be disappointed if nothing changes.

Congrats on the change too. love

I definitely recommend showing them all the things you'll be able to eat, and also recommend you cooking maybe one or two meals a week - this show's your serious about it, and you're willing to make effort... not just leaving it for your parents.

Maybe even go get a vegetarian cookbook this weekend? You'll find heaps of ideas, and the whole thing will seem a lot easier to your parents.

Anyway, you've come to the right place! happy

Good luck with it, it really is a fantastic thing to do. One vegetarians saves 100 animals a year. It's pretty amazing stuff.

Let me know if you need any help at all. Again, good luck!! happy

im going to be brutally honest here, who cares what your parents think? i understand that you want support, but seriously, if your parents dont support you in something you are so passionate about (eg vegetarianism) then it shouldnt really stop you. becoming vegetarian you will find that you will most likely be cooking all your own meals because you know what is in the food. I know it makes it easier if you have support behind you (especially your parents) but dont let that determine your actions. i dont know you or your parents, but ive never heard anyones parents going nuts over them about going vegetarian, so you will be fine. do your research so you arent blindly following. i guess one tip is to not go cold turkey (lol), GRADUALLY cut out your meat intake over say, the course of a month or a few weeks, or else your body will not tolerate the change. i guess the only repercussion is that they'll make you cook your own food!

p.s. PICK UP A COOK BOOK. it will literally save your life. hahaha

p.p.s. congrats on making the change

Earthlings is such a powerful and confronting movie, though if showing it to friends or family I'd recommend warning them first that it's extremely graphic. Seriously. It could really traumatise people - and so it should, I suppose. I wish the world would open its eyes and see the cruelty that is perpetrated on such a mass scale just to satisfy human selfishness.

I've watched it three times, but only once shown it to friends - it made me sad that despite getting their agreement that animals shouldn't be treated like that, they continue to wear leather, eat meat, go to the zoo...
