Hey does anyone know of any brands of hard soy cheeses (kind of like tasty cheese etc) that are suitable for vegans?
I use nutritional yeast for stuff like pasta and tofutti slices for sandwhiches and cheezly for pizza but I'm REALLY craving a nice hard cheese (I can't even remember what they taste like but I'm craving it. ROFL what's that about?!) and I'm not prepared today or any day to have a "one off" as some of my friends (vegan and otherwise) have suggested.
Any brands people know of?

I'm not sure if it's vegan, but there's a soy cheese made by a mob who does soy yoghurt and soy cream cheese, It's with the vegetarian meats in coles and woolies in a yellow packaging kingsland or something like that. My boyfriends had it and said it tastes exactly like cheddar cheese, it comes in the same sort of block as cheezly does, only it doesn't melt well.

Also, youtube vegan cheese, I know that that uncheese cookbook has a few recipes for block cheese, and found a few vids on youtube for how to make it.

Good luck!

Radical Grocery Store in melbourne sell Sheese which is a hard 'cheese'.  I think they're the only place in Australia that sell it (she does mail order if you email her but I'm not sure whether she posts to ACT).  It comes in a variety of flavours, but strong cheddar is my definite favourite.  IMO it's much better than Cheezly - grated on a baked potato, nachos and pizzas its amazing!  It obviously doesn't taste just like cheese, but it's pretty good.  I've even had it in a sandwich with vegan mayo and salad and enjoyed it, and I have never been able to do that with any other vegan cheese.

Monster, that may be the Mainland Vegetarian Cheese. Not vegan... is rennet free but contains dairy but I used to eat that when I was vegetarian and tasted like hard dairy cheese.

I tried Sheese Edam the other day on pizza. Didn't melt well (but similiar to Cheezly). But my omni man said it was nice by itself so that's something!

Does anyone know where Sheese is sold? I bought it at Green Gourmet grocers but haven't seen it anywhere else. Don't mind if it's online either...

Thanks I might give that a go.
I definitely don't want Cheezly as I can't stand it solid only melted; unfortunate that but I find the texture all wrong.
I've got a suspicion of a place that might sell it in the ACT (they sell other things like vegan whipped cream in a can etc) and will try there before going online.

Not vegan. It has something animal derived in it. I can't remember right now but I was so pissed when I found out (of course after I had eaten a tube and obviously missing that one ingredient!)

Sheese or Cheezly are probably your best bets.

Hi guys I just got an email from Eric at Kingsland who advised the soy cheese and creme cheese is both vegan, no dairy and no animal products or bi products! Yay!

Kingsland has always been vegan, your probably thinking of soy life which has vitamin d3 from wool.

Eww. People have been telling you to have a 'one off'? How committed to reducing your ethical impact can you be if you do that?

Veganonline.com and theveganstore have a great range of cheeses available.
