Can you help these laying hens find homes near Melbourne?
by Animals Australia on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 6:02pm

Early next month Gippsland Chook Rescue will be saving as many 18 month old chickens from slaughter as they can.

Please read the important message from Nathan below, and contact him (on the number below) or GCR (please join their Facebook page too) if you can help in any way (as well as safe homes, they are looking for trailers, vans, extra man (or woman) power and need to have details finalised by August 27th).

And please forward to as many people as possible - Facebook is a powerful tool - let's save these chickens!!

"I am helping out with a huge chicken rescue. I have organised a trailer and carry boxes to help out with this rescue. As i already have a number of people wanting to take some.

52 thousand laying hens are going to be sent for slaughter for pet food. They are 18 months old.

An animal activist has been able to legally arrange for us to meet the truck that is shipping them off to slaughter. We will be able to take as many of the chickens as we can to rehome.

I am currently taking orders of anyone that can provide a loving home.

If you have a room for some chickens and want your own cruelty free eggs this is your opportunity to do so and save some lives.

The only requirements for you to be able to get these hens is that they will not be killed for food and you must have an enclosure or aviary or shed etc to lock them up at night to protect them from foxes and feral cats.

I will be delivering to the Western Suburbs of Melbourne however i can deliver else where if need be.

The chickens are free so the only cost will be a donation of petrol money this cost will depend on where you live however should only be a nominal amount of around $20 or less for most people. I am only going to charge the petrol costs i am doing this for the animals!!!

I need to finalise the numbers within a short period of time so please forward this email to your lists and if you are able to save some hens please please let me know.

Kind Regards

Nathan

What a fantastic initiative! Unfortunately if I brought a hen home both me and the hen would find ourselves looking for a new home lol

It just breaks your heart to think who all the 'unlucky' ones will be that will be on the other side of the line...
18 months , they could have another 9 or so years of life left in them & they will never get to scratch in the dirt or bathe in the sun sad

I've been wanting to adopt some rescued chickens for a while now. I might be able to take some but I don't have a chicken coop yet so I would have to get one first. I don't know when I could take them. I'll work it out.  happy
