the caramel was a little runny so next time ill add cornflour to stiffen it a little

What did you use in place of the sweetened condensed milk?
soy condensed milk you can get it online at cruelty free shop
You can also make if if you can find powdered soy milk. You just mix a very thick mixture, using about 1/4 - 1/3rd of the water called for in the instructions, mixing well until you get the right consistency.
It's possible to condense soy milk yourself on the stove. I've never tried it myself though
