Rav, thanks so much for that link. I've wanted a rabbit for as long as I could remember (couldn't have one in QLD though) and have really been wanting one, Getting one from a shelter would be so much more rewarding xD Now to beg the landlord...
I was the same (coming from QLD). I fell in love with a little fella on there over a year ago - some bastard had cut his ears off!!!!!! I went away on hols and when I came back I bunny-sat my bosses big boy... and that's when I learnt I can't get another boy as Baz went nuts. So for now I will keep my 2 little darlings.
As for the question about dogs and buns - they definitely need to be monitored while they are out until both parties are ok with it all. It took me about 6mths to train my dogs. My buns now get kicked out at 7am with the dogs and they frolic all day together.
Another great vet for bunnies is the Lort Smith animal hospital in North Melbourne. They have a couple of awesome vets for "exotic" animals but you usually need to book in advance to see them. Our pets seem to actually enjoy their visits when they get one in particular!
You need a bunny vet though! Not all vets can look after rabbits.
MondaysChild (and any other Perthites) - if you DO get bunnies, I'm not sure where you are in Perth but I recommend Vetcentre in Morley (just near Galleria). One of the nurses there is a bunny breeder (ugh I know!) and their vet is a specialist in small animals. They desexed both my buns.
I was looking at bunnies online all day yesterday lol. I didn't want to sidetrack the thread so havn't posted anything but I do have one question, how are bunnies around dogs? Not that I would be letting them run alone together, but my smallest dog is 1.2 kilos which by the sounds of things is around the same size as some bunnies. Is this a conncern?
My cats, rabbits and guinea pigs......all great together. I even have one cat who likes to sit next to them and chow down on the grass together!
ETA: Guinea pigs are in a separate open top playpen which the cat can get into, but the piggies don't even flinch when she jumps in.
So much bunny talk! Love that there are bunny lovers on here.
Whatever enclosure you decide to get, make sure that it's insect proofed if outside. You just can't be too careful against myxo, calici & flystrike. And, make it BIG, fox/dog proof and weather proof.
I've heard good & bad stories about rabbits & dogs. Some are really great friends but then I've heard of other bunnies being killed by the family dog. They just need supervision at all times. Rabbits will always come off second best in a fight with a dog.
I had an elderly cat when I got my first bun. Dingleberry the rabbit used to torpedo Puddy the cat in the side. We had to supervise Dingy not attacking the cat!
The Melbourne Rabbit Clinic are excellent! They also sell heaps of bunny food and toys so if anyone's looking for small amounts of oaten hay, grass hay, chaff, imported rabbit specific foods and first aid information for their bun, they have it all.
The first pet my fiance and I got when we got together was a beautiful black mini rex named Jezebel - it was instant bunny love so shortly after we got another rex, this time a standard (as in size - he was STUNNING ) white boy named Gene. We then got a deaf kitten who the bunnies (with a little help from us) basically brought up. Now we have 3 bunnies (Gene & Jezebel are no longer with us unfortunately - R.I.P) and 3 cats - all living happily together. Animals absolutely rule!
Oh and my point is...Take Radical Rabbits advice - adopt a bun!
