It didn't work..It said the page could not be found.

What is your profile pic? I did a search of your name and it came up with 3 but I can't figure out which one it is cause the photo's aren't of faces.

I feel so angry and sad..I have received two emails asking if I want to join in with the sweeps, I received a "Lucky pick" sweep ticket to pass on to my boss, and right now all the staff in my hall are in the Board Room having a Melbourne Cup Luncheon with the TV blaring..They were wise enough to not even invite me though!

My DP is a cat with a hat on saying 'You don't have to like horse racing to wear a silly hat, but you have to be silly to like horse racing'

Yeah I sent a group email out at work today about horse racing cruelty... only got 1 reply lol (but it was a good one) but she did end it with she couldn't wait for the lunch BBQ (eek!) I'm lucky I work from home and not in the office........

Haha, good old AA, I had that as my DP but I ended up changing it back and just putting the statistics as a post, more people would read it anyway.

I got one good reply in the notices as well, the lady congratulated me for posting it and said she is glad I'm getting awareness out there.

Ok, I'm going to put another spin on this issue.

Horse racing, horse riding in general, is unnatural to the horse. But of the 18,000 or so horses sent to slaughter there are at least that number in work ready to be raced. So if horse racing was banned what would happen to the now 36,000 odd horses? Let alone broodmares, breeding stallions, weanlings and yearlings?

You have to look at the whole picture. Instead of banning racing completely look at trying to change the practices. For example, the barefoot movement. Lets try and get that pushed through and accepted by the industry. Then we can look at diet, equipment (bits) and the issue of the horses not making the grade.

And there has been some improvement. Jockeys are only allowed to hit a horse with a whip so many times during a race (and this is very heavily monitored), the horse only has to be shod in a quarter aluminum shoe now and not the whole shoe and ex racehorses are highly sort after as mounts for other discplines. Especially showing, eventing, Pony Club and ARC. Just have a look at Horse Deals. They're fetching upwards of $3000! Not bad for horses that otherwise would only fetch a few hundred $$ in the sales ring a few years ago.

Yes, its all good to go out protesting against the 'cruelty' of horse racing, but there are so many supporters of it, they will just see it all as troublemaking. So use some people skills, protest for some better changes instead and believe me you will get a lot further.

I have worked in a few race stables and its not as bad as it has been made out to be. The stablehands get first pick of the horses that are no good before they are moved on. They do get turned out on weekends or spelled for a few months. Yeah, the diets could be better, but they have improved somewhat in the few years that I have been around them. And a lot of these horses genuinely love to run. It's what they have been born and bred to do.

Don't condone an industry entirely before you have had experience in it. Anyone can write something on a website and make it seem the worst thing in the world. Just keep that in mind happy

I wondered why they saved their whips til the last 30 seconds....

If these horses genuninely love to run, why is the use of bits & whips neccessary?

Well bits are for stearing and stopping happy and whips are meant to get them to jump ahead or keep their mind on their job. Believe me I don't support their use, I ride my own horses bitless and will never use a whip, but this is what I mean about getting some things changed.

Do you support the racing industry?
Do you think its fair a horse runs the risk of being injured and killed in the name of human entertainment?

You argue that the ~36,000 horses will be slaughtered if horse racing was banned..but I don't think anyone is talking about a sudden ban where theres no notice..
It would be more of a phase out approach and therefore, the horses could stop being bred for this purpose.

In fact, I really don't even think there is a possibility of it being banned (in the near furture at least), and thats not even what I'm aiming for..The less people who support this horrible "sport", the better and if I can change even one persons opinion then I think its all worth while.

Arguing that the practices should change to make things more bearable for the horses is quite similar to encouraging people to eat free-range beef (rather than go veg) in my opinion. Sure, it may be better than what is going on at the moment but we still shouldn't be using them at all.

And no matter how well the horses who race are treated, it still doesn't change the fact that thousands of less fortunate horses will be slaughtered in order to pick out the winners.
