I'm relatively new here but I don't have anywhere else to go so I thought I'd put it here.
I'm writing a story right now called "Coconut Freak" (it SOUNDS ridiculous but it's actually really sad) and even though I like the story I feel that the actual writing is boring. Does anyone else here write at all? If so do you have any tips that might help me improve my writing?
P.S. I often get writers block too. Any tips for THAT would be 1 + 1 where 1 = OUTRIGHT OUTSTANDINGLY AWESOME!
If you've got a good story, stick with it!
If you're worried that your actual writing isn't engaging enough, try taking a look at your sentences. it's good to mix it up with a combination of short and long sentences so you're in control to build drama (if that's what you need to do) or drop a bombshell. Short sentences with just a few words can really draw the reader in and this is especially important with your opening paragraph, and even your first line. This is where the reader decides to keep reading or to give it a miss. Make that first line a killer!
Another good thing to do to keep your sentences interesting is to put the strongest point of the sentence at the end of it. For example:
-"Bob's dog had died, so he was here for grief counselling"
-"Bob was here for grief counselling, his dog had died."
It might seem subtle but the second sentence will have more impact and interest because it ends on a strong point. Obviously it won't be possible to manipulate every sentence this way but for lines that give us good information about a character or advance the story, it's really a good idea.
The title is actually interesting, I'd love to know what it's all about!
Aaaaand just realised I've been rambling on. Sorry!
I hope that's all clear. Good luck!
p.s. if you get the story to a point you are comfortable with, I'm sure a lot of us would love to read it! ;D
