that sounds like a really, really bad idea (unless you're a tattoo artist)

if you do go ahead, good luck though!  will be interested to see the results

Everyone has to begin / practise somehow. Isnt it better to do it to yourself than some other person?

In a sterile environment, under the watch of a trained professional, yes.

Agreed. There are a lot of things, medically speaking, that can go wrong with a tattoo (resulting in cosmetic imperfections, to more serious effects), and a lot of people who do it themselves are hardly going to have the necessary equipment, or be terribly vigilant about safety.

Also, it isn't as though you need to tattoo on humans to practice prior to becoming a full-time tattooist. Tattoo apprentices often practice on the skin of fruit, for example.

No tatts, piercings or breast implants (lol)... not even hair dye - I'm working hard on developing the salt'n pepper naturally through life-induced stress.

Maybe that makes me a radical, since everyone else in my gen seems to be into body mod... each to their own. Still, some people look super beautiful with ink art and metal sculpture adorning random parts of their body, including folks on this forum.

I think it is 16, with parents permission, but i am not sure, it may be 18 because of the area.

"Unlike tattooing, there is no minimum age for body piercing and no legal requirement for parental consent for children under 18 years in South Australia."

As far as I'm aware, the above is up to date. Despite the lack of laws around this, however, basically all reputable places that perform piercings will have their own rules around age. Most will not do piercings without parental permission under 16, and, if they're at all legitimate, they probably will refuse to do nipple and genital piercings for those under 18. Please do not go to a place that does not have these type of restrictions in place; chances are they won't really be terribly interested in upholding strict standards of safety.

You should be doing this anyway, but have a discussion with your piercer about how they sterilize the equipment. Be sure they know their stuff before they stick a needle through you. Viruses like HIV are often caught through improper needle use (not necessarily piercings, of course, but it is a possibility).
