I think that we are already pretty over-populated and personally, what happened was horrible but I don't nessecarily agree with all of them coming in here.
I mean sure, most of us did too - But they're going to come here and probaly get a home, money from the government and a good job, a big upgrade from their country while people like us are still trying to pay off houses after many years, etc.

My opinion.
Being over-populated is not a matter of opinion, we are or we aren't. And we aren't.
Why would the government just give them a house? They aren't suddenly rich when they come here, they're just safer.. And I wouldn't consider driving a taxi or running a 7-11 as a good job, they have to take what they can get which usually isn't much..

Sarah, a boat on the way to Australia violently crashed into rocks off Christmas Island, there's footage of it and it's horrific.. 30 people died including kids and women with their babies.

We are definitely not over-populated.

Oh my... That's awful. Do they know what caused the crash?

Just really really bad weather, the waves were so high the boat didn't stand a chance and was just repeatedly smashed against a cliff face.

I thought it was ridiculous when the Rudd government, I think it was, wanted a bigger population in Australia, but then at the same time didn't want 'boat people'.

If you're concerned about 'over-population' in Australia, then don't have children.

Oh no. :| That's so, so tragic.

Has anyone seen the ads defending asylum seekers and "boat people" (that term is so discriminating...)?
I remember seeing it just before I left for the aeroport a few weeks ago. Where the Australian mum and the Indian mum are talking about saving their child by sending him away on a boat. I thought it was excellent, but my dad got all defensive.
What do you guys think?

-_-
The roads, the traffic - They are always packed with people, escipally where I live and if we continue to let people come in the country like this, the problem is going to get worse. Besides, houses are being built everywhere in Whittelsea, which was all country - It's destroying the land, environment and a place for where the kangaroos live.
And it's funny because most people that come into my school who lived overseas have more money than anyone here would have. The government gives them money.

The traffic problem isn't due to asylum seekers though. We have a traffic problem because we're idiots. We didn't plan our roads properly, and no one understands what car-pooling, or 'taking public transport' means. Instead of buying your child a car, get them a bike. If you work in the city, take public transport. It's quite simple, but we are so spoiled that we need to drive to the city with the air con blasting and music blaring.

Its a tough one.

We might have the lowest density of population but it just plain ignorant to forget that Australia is the driest most arid country on earth. Australia can only sustain populations around the coast, thus making our infrastructure so small and the cities over populated.

I think having them in "camps" and places like Christmas Island is the best option, but something needs to be done about the quality of life there.

in the past ( 70's i think) we had an extremely low population and allowed migrants from all walks of earth and now Australia is one of the multicultural countries around. This cannot happen now as we just dont have the  infrastructure to support populations. If you live in the cities you will understand.

I wish we could let everyone who was worse off in but I think the best possible thing to do now is to have them in SAFE AND COMFORTABLE camps. Possibly with schooling.

The only other I see is sending bogans OUT of Australia and letting in the needy. I would vote for that. Personally, Im sick of seeing horrible, unintelligent people breeding and abusing their children
