You will need to check with your local council if you can have one because most councils will not allow pigs as pets.
As pigs have a lot of diseases they can catch that we can catch from them or give to them, you should go and talk to a farm veterinarian about vaccination, worming, lice control, etc.

If you do get to get one make sure you provide a nice dirt area for it to roll in and even muddy areas for it bath in to protect its skin.

I'm not sure about desexing protocol for pigs but females can get rather nasty after all the hormones kick in.

I recently brought a miniture piglet. I did all my research and where others charged $450 - 650 I got mine for $100. I went out to see the parents so I knew how big mine would get and I seeked council approval to make sure all was ok. Eutopia is now 6 weeks old on Saturday 5th Feb 2011 and is learning how to do tricks, loves to play games and talks to me when he wants something. I recommend getting a miniture piglet if your in Australia their the funnest animals. If your over seas then you have a choice of a Pot belly or a tea cup but Australia we just have minitures.

The person I got mine off was:

$100, r u sure its a mini pig? r u sure they were the perents? thats way to cheap to belive. i bought a ""mini"" pig about a year ago. his name is Shilo - black and white spotted - i bought him for $1000 . the breeder said he would grow to 42 cm well i measured him yester day and he is 72 cm. just becouse the perents are small doesnt mean the offspring will be , im sorry to say there are no such things as mini pigs. and thats a FACT. i love my shilo , he is my world but i just thought i would share that with u guys, i did years of reserch and i came across him, and thought omg finally a actual mini pig. but i was wrong. although i dont mind if he grows as long as he is healthy and happy i dont care tongue . also be care full with pigs around dogs, while the pig is a piglet it will be fine but later on pigs will try to kill dogs so be super careful - if a pig doent like something it will attack.

on a positive note , pigs are good animals, social, loving , joyful creatures . if u want a pig i would suggest to have alot of land and if u live in town please dont get a pig at all even if its a " mini " pig. pigs love to dig so u need a fare bit of land to mange the damage they do, shilo is in a 11 acar paddock with 3 lambs and he digs ALOT. i wouldnt have him in a smaller paddock as it is hard to manage the holes he digs happy . pigs dont like to be alone, they like to have a herd, hence why i have 3 lambs lol happy . Shilo and the lambs all get along well and he protects them from any dangour. if u get a pig make sure u have a vet remove his tusks, as they can grow large and can hurt you or other animals. pigs need alot of care when it comes to there diet, as long as they have fresh, lush grass they should be ok, but they love pumkin and fruit never feed them corn! or any dairy products or pig grower foods as they can get super fat and have cloged arteries and have a stroke or heart attack.

Make sure they pig has shade happy and mud to roll around in becouse they can get sunburnt esp, if they are white.

they have to have a few vaccinations a year -sorry i cant remember the names tho - but ask ur vet and they will know. tongue

rescuing a pig would be awsum! but i would sujest, even tho minis are cute when there little, alot are inbred and bred to young and this can cause alot of health probs, even tho i love shilo to bits i wouldnt ever suggest to buy a mini pig. a large pig is just as loverble and they are a few hundred dollars cheaper lol .

if u would like to know anything about pigs or any other animal dont hesitate to ask ecstatic

sorry for the super long comment, im waiting on a reply from the breeder of shilo ,i aksed about why he seemed to grow larger then she said he would. i will tell ypu her responce ecstatic

Your exactly right there is no such thing as a mini pig the way they get them small is keeping them on a strict diet and such stunting there growth thats why so many people who buy them get shown the parents then when they get theres they feed it well and it just keeps growing.

Why is everyone buying pigs on a whim?

Haven't we learnt to adopt or rescue yet? I can't imagine that there would be a lot of vegetarian/vegan pig breeders out there and why breed pigs anyway? It just sounds like a selfish money making scheme.

you can buy mini pigs every were, they usally come desexed so you cant breed them because they are soo expensive, but warning! they are very intelligent and demanding pets.

The way they are bred is cruel apparently., they chose the runts of each litter and malnourish them and then keep breeding etc...

Also they will dig up your lawn unless you get them a nose ring and I think that's cruel so just be prepared for them to destroy your lawn wink

As far as I know (and I've researched a lot), there's no such thing as a miniature pig. Seeing their parents is no indication, as it can take a few years for a pig to grow to its full size. There are definitely smaller pigs, but miniature is not the word to describe them. Pigs sold as ''miniature" are often malnourished, underfed and unhealthy. The fact that people buy "miniature" pigs thinking they will stay small, is a big reason why so many pigs are abandoned when they grow older and larger.
