I'll start by saying sorry, I know this has been asked before, but I have literally been searching for the thread for about half an hour so I gave up!
Anyway, could someone (AA admin?) tell me how the "lives saved" calculator works. As I am wanting to explain the statement that, on average, a vegetarian saves around 100 lives per year. Ie, is it based on the average person eating meat 100 times per year? or 100 entire animals? (seems a lot)? Or does it include by-products of the industry such as male chicks?
I dont know but the term " Lives Saved" implies something was saved from death. It's not like 100 animals are released into the wild or aren't breed because I'm vegan. It's much more complicated than that
As a rule I disregard all vegan spastistics. I've been embarrassed too many times by quoting shotty statistics that have been proven wrong or misleading

It's based upon the rules of supply and demand.
If you don't want to be embarrassed by quoting statistics, do a quick Google search to see if they're actually backed up by valid studies. Simple.
Also, was the term 'spastistics' supposed to be humorous? It comes off as incredibly offensive.

What are the RULES of supply demand? I didnt know there were "RULES"
I HAVE learnt to always check statistics now and I've found that almost all statistics we use are misleading (such as the one about livestock emissions equaling transport emissions).

Aha. Is 'laws' a better term? To me, the two terms are interchangeable. A lot of economists use the term 'rules' also.
If you can't find legitimate vegan-friendly statistics, then you're using search engines incorrectly. Sure, I'm certain most stats people churn out are incorrect, but if you're being 'embarrassed' by being caught out (as you said you were), then you should do your research first. That seems fairly basic to me. It's good that you've learnt to do it; good for you.
im curious in knowing as well! now does it work? and how by not eating meat or by products of the meat and dairy industry does that save lives? lil confussed
