Hi all, I see B&S has continued to be unnecessarily antagonistic towards others on the forum. I've banned her now. So you shouldn't have to deal with any more of that. Thanks to everyone who reported her for forum abuse.

Amazing how when someone begins to lose an argument they begin to resort to bullying and personal abuse

WOW! How did I miss THAT debate?
I have to say, I thought of compostkitty the moment I read her first anti-vegan parents post. D: That was rather horrid and rude, especially considering that most vegan parents put more thought into their childrens' health than anyone else! I know all you vegan parents on here (and parents-to-be! Congrats, EJay!) are doing/will do an amazing job of raising healthy, well-rounded, intelligent kids. happy

Other than that, isn't it amazing how much she contradicted herself- admitting that you can get iron and calcium from plant sources then saying vegan parents were stupid for causing their children deficiency in just those things! -sigh-

Well, I know all you guys are doing a fabulous job! If I ever have kids, I aspire to be like you all (although it's more likely I'd adopt).

Can't believe I missed it too! My favourite from B&S was "We really are good people".
No, you are not.

Just remember that as a result of B&B's admission, everything said previously was meant to provoke and did not truly reflect their views (if that is to be believed). So as despicable as it was to tell people to get effed, it was all talk and no substance.

ie don't waste anymore time on this.

I'm so glad B&S got banned. I can't believe people like that who join a site they disagree with for the sake of bullying, I hope that their children don't turn out that way!! I hope that one day they will realise how wrong they were and actually feel REAL remorse. As for what the actual discussion is meant to be about... I hope one day to raise healthy and happy vegan children and I applaud all those already doing it =)

Hi all  happy

I'm new here. Thought I'd post here to get this thread back on topic after all that nasty troll business and post some links for zoolnerd regarding vegetarian and vegan pregnancy and raising vegan children.

FYI: I am a mum and I was vegan throughout my pregnancy. My health was excellent the whole time, baby was born at exactly 50th percentile and now she is a chubby little monkey at 90th percentile for weight, 97th percentile for height and very healthy.  Having said that, all good scientists know that anecdotal evidence is not enough to draw conclusions from, so here are a few links  that appear to be supported by research studies.

American dietetic association position paper on vegetarian diets http://www.eatright.org/about/content.aspx?id=8357 (click on the pdf for the full paper)

PCRM Vegetarian pregnancy info sheet: http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/pregnancy.html
Raising vegetarian kids info sheets:
http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/veg_diets_for_children.html
http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vegetarian_kids.html

In my opinion the ADA paper doesn't provide particularly overwhelming evidence on the safety of vegetarian/vegan diets in children, mainly due to a lack of substantial research in the area. However, their position is that vegetarian and vegan diets are healthy and adequate for all stages of life.

Just because what you read was in a text book doesn't necessarily make it fact. Anyone can write a text book, or any book for that matter. The most reliable sources of this sort of information come from research papers in reputable peer reviewed journals. So much research is dodgy and many studies have poor research methodolgy. I can't vouch for the links above as I haven't gone through and read the articles they reference, but at least they generally come from peer reviewed journals which is better than a lot of the "research" publicised by general media.

Hope that helps
happy

I realise I'm not the most popular person on this forum, but please- only a total twit would be vegan during pregnancy, and force ''veganism'' onto an infant. Seriously, I have two small children, who are the centre of my life, and it is so risky/dangerous to go without dairy/meat (AT LEAST white meat- fish etc) when your carrying a bubby. Its the one time you really have to step up and put the best interests of your bubby ahead of your own ''Urgh, I could never eat that'' way of thinking. I'm not being horrible, but that would just be bonkers.
?
my mother was vegan during and after having me and everything was fine. its just scare tactics thats all.
