sorry, but no, your wrong. It is essential for a pregnant woman to have plenty of calcium, iron etc. But if your happy to feed your pride and joy hommus and water I guess that's your choice. Poor bubby
Animal products are not the only sources of calcium and iron. Most nutritionists would agree that these minerals are absorbed more efficiently by our bodies when consumed from plant foods.
If you really had studied nutrition you would know more than you seem too, or more likely, you have only briefly studied the basics based on an omni diet which is equivalent to being acquainted with the healthy food pyramid. There's more to nutrition that 'what most people do.'
My mum's been a dietitian for 20 years, she's omnivore, my sister is veg and I'm vegan. We're all super healthy.
Kirrilly, no, I'm not a dietician. But I am a mother, which I assume your not...? As I said, I wasn't being nasty in that msg. I think you just seek out my name and pounce to attack anything I say And yes, I suppose encouraging a child to eat meat until they're old enough to choose could be seen as 'force', but at least its in the child's best interests. FYI, while I'm not a dietician, I have studied Child Nutrition. So yeah, in answer to your sarcastic question, I do know what I'm talking about.
Roll your eyes all you like, I wasn't being sarcastic. As Jamie said, calcium and iron do not just come from animal products. Sure, a vegan mother may need to eat a little more calorie-wise, but so what? If she and her child can live happy and healthy without meat/dairy, why shouldn't they?
JamieCS, I actually didn't say that dairy/iron only comes from dairy and meat. I said it would be insane to cut them out of your diet during pregnancy, and to deny a baby child those things. And its absolutely true.

But why would any mother cut iron and calcium out of her diet? I agree, that is insane.

Sorry, but no, you're wrong.
Lets have a look at foods you should avoid when pregnant shall we?
Yoghurt
Milk
Cheese
Sushi
Seafood
Now lets have a look at what dieticians say an omni should eat during pregnancy during a day:
4-6 servings of breads and cereals (preferrably wholegrain or wholemeal
5-6 servings of vegetables and legumes
4 servings of fruit
things like 'calcium and meat protein' is something which is down to 1 serving
Both of which you can get from other sources than animals.
JamieCS, 'if I really had studied'..... Haha! Unbelievable. So once again, the vegan way is the only way. Haha. Funny. If your mum ''really has'' been a dietician for 20 years, ask her what she thinks of a pregnant woman/infant being on a vegan diet.

...so -you- say.
Of course it would be insane to cut out iron and calcium during pregnancy. We didn't do it and our vegan pregnancy was spot on I have a blog in which I wrote about our experiences if you desire to read it. It's mostly about pregnancy stuff than vegan stuff, however.
I have far greater concerns for the children being raised by the type of person who makes an account on a vegetarian/vegan forum and sets their display pic as a photo of meat for the sole purpose of arguing with people. I know people who have been raised vegetarian and vegan and from what I've read here they seem to be far more mature and well adjusted than yourself
