I became vegetarian at 15 and got criticised all the time too. My folks thought it was a phase and I sure got used to some words like unhealthy, abnormal, stupid rah, rah rah... I was vegetarian for 12 years (before becoming vegan 5 years ago) and have to say since becoming vegan, they're not as bad. I think they have realised it's not a phase!
So long as you do your research in regards to nutrients etc, you just need to ignore ppl like this. Just remember that ppl have been brainwashed for generations that eating meat & dairy is healthy and considered "the norm" and parents, in particular, will be insulted that you are disagreeing with the way they brought you up.
Unfortunately, you will encounter ppl like this your whole life. But as time passes, it does get easier
My younger sister was a vegetarian and now she eats meat again, my other sister doesn't eat beef, my dad eats meat but not as often as he used to and my mum and I are both vegan. We all eat different foods and have different views on things. I am a much more stricter vegan then my mum. Even from my mum I get sh*t about that when I talk to someone about my views of veganism and meat eating she says that I'm 'preaching' and making it sound like a religion, so even from my mum I don't get cut much slack. One of my sister's always complain that I can't raise my children vegan if I had them because a vegan diet isn't healthy and she's saying that I don't get enough iron and things from being on a vegan diet. Atleast every second day I get into an argrument with someone in my family and I get so angry and frustrated because they don't say calm when they're talking and they don't ever listen to me explain my views. They think they're right all the time and that really bugs me.
But besides the fact, I get things from my family about my vegan diet (they support me but they don't think I get what I need from it) so really you just have to make sure that you know what you're talking about when your discussing with someone about being vego and if someone seems to get on your nerves about it, then just say 'You know what? You're not even listening to my opinion and you're not giving what I have to say a chance' and just leave it at that until they decide to bring it up or you do again when both of you are willing to listen and try not to let it get to you like I let it get to me.
You have us that understand or are on your side (if we arn't vegan), we are here to support you.
Some people dont understand unfortunatly or perhaps they may get worried your making the wrong choice (although you know your making the right one by you). Your parents will love you no matter your choice, they are probably just concerned.
Be yourself, i know it seems tough now, but you will be so happy to be your own person in the end.
Please talk to us if you still feel distressed about this, you can pm me if you like, some other people may say the same thing
yeaa thankyou (:
i know what you mean, its just stupid how my dad thinks its kool to try make me eat meat -__-
thankyou tho (: i will do (Y)
