I love what this site is doing and how it's promoting awareness, and even better to see so many people that support it all happy

Anyway, many things factored into how I became vegetarian.
My mum's been the inspiration from the start; she's been vegetarian for about 8+ years.
I used to have a lovely dog, Rufus – who unfortunately could no longer be looked after so he was adopted into one of my dad's work-mate's family – and I loved him dearly; he was a constant reminder every single time I used to eat meat.
His leaving my household made me take the sudden change into vegetarianism, along with my choice of using only natural & organic cosmetics and skin-care. It seemed to me to go hand-in-hand; looking after myself inside and out.

Furthermore, with all those factors and even more reading done about ethics and being healthy, truly healthy, I'm in the process of becoming vegan happy

As a teenager I always loved animals and wanted to become a vegetarian, which I tried to do a number of times, it was always hard when you're young and dont really know how to cook very well and your parents still have meat as the main ingredient fro every meal!
When I was about 17 I decided that I was old enough to do it properly so I went vegetarian with my boyfriend, I dont really think there was a lightbulb moment at this point.
I have been vegan since the beginning of the year (being vegetarian for 7 years). The though had been in the back of my mind for years, but I thought I would wait until I had had kids etc, but then I went to melbourne and was having breakfast next to a girl who was eating a vegan meal and I suddenly thought 'why cant I do that? it looks delicious!'
When I got home I started researching it and came accross this site, and also saw a segment on the 7pm project about bobby calves which really cemented the idea for me.
I dont think I could ever go back.

My change was kinda random. I was looking up bands/music, and came across Kisschasy (who i am now obsessed with), and it linked me to Unleashed. So i started watching the videos, and reading up about it. And yeah, stopped eating meat. Since then I've stopped using animal tested products, wearing animal fur (mainly leather - not that i was a fan of it in the first place), and about a month or two ago i went vegan ecstatic

It has been the best decision I've ever made. if i could change anything, it would to have been vegan since birth ... but yeah. Ah well, too late for that now. Hahaha

So, thank you Darren Cordeux, and the other members of Kisschasy for helping me understand the more important things in life thumb wink
Ahhhh Kisschasy... monkey love love love beaverhug

well i was born into a family with a long and large history of dairying , butchering, slaughtering and farming large numbers of cattle, sheep and pigs. I lived, and still live on 300 acars on a ilsand located 20 mins inland from the nsw mid north coast. when my pop was still around he use to farm beef cattle, he even did his own slaughtering, 30 years ago he ran and owned the largest slaughterhouse on the mid north coast. and he suppled majoirty of the meat. he even owned all the local butcher shops and he used to have a large dairy. so bascially he had every thing. when i was 11 i remeber i use to go out and watch the sheep been slaughter, same as the chickens, and a cow or 2. i never thought about it in a bad way b4. i was always told it was normal n animals dont mind, i had a pet cow my pop gave me when i was 3, my pop was such a beautiful person ( besides his veiws on meat and animals ) but he gave all his grand children a pet and i was the only 1 to recive a cow. anyway. he gave me his fave calf and i named her moo-moo. she is a pure angus. and he said everytime she has a calf i would have to sell it. that soon changed tongue

when the first calf redstar was born he was a lil bull calf, half angus and half hereford. he was red all over and had a white face with a red star on his forhead - hence the name happy . once he reached 6 months of age it was time to sell him, but i couldnt part with him - i was 4 at the time, so my pop said i could keep him but the next calf has to go, and yet again i fell in love with the next calf , a lil bull calf , angus cross murrey grey, named bully. no-way was i going to let him go , i loved him so much . and my pop said i had to sell him but he is still here today, this story happened 3 more times and i still have all the calfs. redstar is now 12, bully is now 10, charcole ( 3rd calf ) is now 8, lola ( 4th calf ) is 5 and wedg ( 5th calf ) is now 3. and moo is 15. and farmers still think she looks like she is 3-4 , she looks amazing for her age

woops got  bit off the story tongue . so when i was 11 i saw that some 1 posted in DOLLY that there was a website for animal lovers called unleshed, so i cheacked it out and this is were i relised that animals do feel pain, fear, love, compassion, joy, sadness and every other emotion JUST LIKE US! so i decied to try bee veg, and i felt alot better, even my lil sis tryed and she is still veg happy . so this is were i talked to my pop about farming, and he said to me " shannon, dont tell any1 but u are my fav grandchild, i love you more then anything in the world, if this is how u truely feel about animals, i will help you and give u support all along the way, from today i will stop farming animals" i dont remember what  said to him but i will never forget what he said to me. So with that been said, i was so excited, i had been rescuing rabbits, guinea pigs and rats and rehoming them since i was 8 with my parents help of course happy . and i always loved pigs, sheep and cows more then anything in the world so i asked pop if he would help set up a santuary for farm animals and to my amazment he said yes.

ever since i was 11 i have been veg, working on vegan and rescueing livestock from slaughter and abuse around my local area, sadley my world came to a end this year when my pop passed away, but his kind change of mind for his grand daughter wil always be remebered. ever since " oink-moo rescue" has been established we have rescued over 265 animals and rehomed some, but we have currenlty around 110 animals in care atm. with the most recent to been 2 , 12 and 11 year old cows who were skin and bone when i got them and now they have put on weight and are running freely with the other cows and enjoying life to the fullest.

sorry my post is so long happy

i guess my reason for change was i loved animals more then anything in the world, and even the hardest people can change there ways. thanks.
That is such a heart-wrenching, amazing, inspiring story! Thanks for sharing it with us, Shanii! beaverhug Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

I love how different everyones stories are!
My Hubby was Vegetarian for about 10 years before he went vegan, and I stayed an idiot! I closed my mind to it all for many many years.... Then he told me about dairy farming and the bobby calves and that was it! In ONE DAY I converted! I researched lots of things and watched Earthlings sad and now our children (2 and 4) are vegan at home and I have never felt better!
I could never go back.... its just not right!

I was reading a post by Jesse in which he mentioned going vegetarian after having an informed conversation with a patient friend. This made me curious as to what motivates people to make a kinder change in their life. Maybe there is a common thread that can help when discussing the topic with others, or at the least, it might make for some interesting stories.
I remember clearly when & why I went vegetarian. I grew up in a house full of animal lovers, and have been head-over-heels in love with them for as long as I can remember. At age 20 I stopped using any products that are tested on animals, or are owned by parent companies who test on animals (darn Unilever seem to own everything).
I'd tried going vegetarian (unsuccessfully) when I was 13, but by the time I'd turned 22 I'd started eating & enjoying meat less & less every day. Then at Big Day Out 2005 I went to the RSPCA stall & saw a sticker stating "Meat is Murder", & that was it for me... I completely agreed with the statement, loved everything about it, & haven't consumed any meat since that day. More recently I went vegan after seeing the Bobby Calf report on the 7pm show, & I don't think I'll ever look back.
Anybody else interested in sharing the how, when & why of why they changed? Even the smallest of changes like not using products tested on animals or eating free-range meat make a huge impact, & I'd love to hear some other's stories.
Congrats on going vegan!

I actually started being a vegetarian at 10, I just naturally thought it weird and wrong to be eating an innocent animal..and then a few years ago I was driven to stay a vegetarian when I found out about factory farming. No way I could EVER eat flesh. And I recently went vegan too, for the same stories about bobby calves. I became completely aware and thats it, I automatically became a vegan! And its been a lot easier than what people say!! I just feels good knowing that you're not consuming cruelty stuff...inc products, shampoos etc. I always check labels and research what is good or not.

Darren Cordeux's hotness led me to google which led me to his expose which led me to my horrific discovery about how animals are treated which led to my decision to deprive my diet of animal products as soon as possible. Will be vegan by next year hopefully.
