We wont address it because there's no need. There is no logical answer to this, this is an ethic and moral opinion. We choose to donate because we can, because we feel it is right. As I stated I think there is a limit. I don't want all meat eaters to die, I don't try to turn everyone I know Veg*n, it is my choice thus they can live how they would like. My main issue isn't with animals in the meat industry- I know it is a problem and yes I do help with campaigning but my passion is with companion animals and our legislative issues with backyard breeders, puppy mills and the over population of dogs and cats we have.
What examples can we give you when our answers are in our hearts, its how we feel? I know I will be setting up a fund when I pass for my views- that will concern everyone who knew me and maybe others- hopefully teaching them the causes. But I'm proud of being a blood donor, I'm proud that I have signed up for organ donations because in my heart I would be so frustrated if a family member of mine was refused an organ because they eat meat.
But there is a logical answer, as it's a logical question in a logical field. If all ethics and morals are subjective opinions, then veganism is just as moral or immoral as a carnivorous life. Meat eaters feel it's right to eat meat, but that alone doesn't make it right.
No I don't feel that it does make it right, however to some who knows what happens, what cruelty goes into the meat industry, its still not important enough for them to stop eating meat. Thats their balance of thought while ours is different- same with this discussion.
Exactly. And while their balance of thought perhaps is different to ours, it doesn't mean that they deserve to die, or that we are better people than them. All my friends, family and my partner eat meat and I'd hate for them to die because a vegan decided not to donate an organ on account of them eating meat.
I dont think that is a balance of thoughts at all, I think it is a very unbalanced way to think. Unbalanced by upbringing, brainwashed by huge multinational corporations and their insidious marketing campaigns. I undestand that people still love their families no matter what atrocities their lifestyles lead to but for the same reason I chose this diet and why animal rights is so important to me. Its time we started putting the animals before humans. If your family have animals killed for them, stop them doing it. Its not a matter of personal choice, the animals dont have a choice if they will be killed. I do not respect their "right" to eat death. It is not an acceptable lifestyle in my eyes.
so i guess I've worked out my answer I will not support meat eaters with my words, actions or my organs its just unacceptable.
Your organs or blood donations could go to a rapist or pedophile as well. They could go to people far worse than just meat eaters... But I don't see why the potential negative should stop someone from doing good. Besides, unless you were brought up vegan or vegetarian, every vegan/vegetarian was once a meat eater too. You're not a higher person than a meat eater for not eating meat, and the life of a meat eater is not less important. I can't believe I'm actually having this conversation to be honest. Unless the person is a hunter/fisherman, the same amount of animals are still going to be killed if one meat eater dies. I'm glad I'm healthy and in a position to be able to give blood frequently, and I'm glad I'm helping people (not just animals) while alive... And I'm glad I can help people when I'm dead as well.

that is not true, there is a little counter beside your profile that shows how many animals we each save by our time not eating meat. every single person counts, every action counts. Market forces work of supply and demand, if you dont eat meat it shows up on a graph somewhere. Everything counts. I dont think i"m higher, I just think eating meat is wrong. I think its just normal to not eat meat, like its normal to not murder humans. I'm not higher for not doing it, its just right. and I also would not like my blood or organs to go to paedophiles, or rapists or murderers. I'm obliged by my heart to not support any of those actions so thats just more reason to not donate
Chewy, let me ask it from a different perspective. If the little pig in your photo came to you to beg for its life, which it definately would if it could speak human and said "if you donate your organs to your dad he will live and in a months time I will be killed to feed him, please let me live dont donate your organs" how would you respond to that cute little guy?
There are some very good points raised on this discussion.
I've now decided I don't want to be an organ donor. Even before going veg I was very unsure about it.
Is there a way to register as a non-organ donor? Or do we just make it clear to our close family members?
There was a discussion on the counter a while ago, and a lot of people concluded that they didn't think it necessarily means they've saved x amount of animals. I tend to agree with this in the short term. In many instances, me being vegan has meant more meat has gone to waste (e.g. being accidentally served a meat dish at a restaurant when I asked for a veg one, taking one bite and realising and them throwing it out). The amount of meat being thrown out at Woolworths and Coles doesn't appear to be slowing down either unfortunately. But nothing would ever change if we didn't think we could make a difference, so I agree that collectively, in the long-term, a huge increase in the amount of vegetarians will slow demand. I believe that even meat eaters can make a difference by reducing the amount of meat they eat, and by having meat free days, which many meat eaters are doing nowadays.
I just don't think allowing one person to die will make a huge difference to this demand at all, and I think it's completely unfair to not give them the opportunity at life (to which they could actually be an amazing person and a vegan anyway, or become one) on the account that they may eat meat.
"I think its just normal to not eat meat, like its normal to not murder humans."
Actually, evolution will say that eating meat IS normal. That of course doesn't mean it's right these days, but the normality of it is the reason why many people find it hard to turn vegetarian.

It wouldn't have been killed solely to feed him -- it would have been killed anyway if it was at a factory farm and I wouldn't have been able to save its life (but I could have saved my dad's life if I gave him an organ -- therein lies the difference).
But regardless, to answer your question, I would respond like this: I don't have the opportunity to donate my organs to my dad because he's already dead. But if I could have donated an organ to him while alive (i.e. a kidney) I would have done so, so I could have been given the opportunity to not grow up without a father, which was INCREDIBLY hard for myself and my family.

talk to the people that you organise your drivers licence with. you can also verify at the Organ donars registry.

I don't have a drivers licence (we walk everywhere) so I'll verify it with the donor registry then.
Thank you!

I'm not going to force everyone I know to stop eating meat, getting them angry at me isn't going to prove anything, its like forcing a religion on someone and hell I get pissed when someone tells me to go Christian- it just makes me dislike the religion even more. I'm not vegan either I'm a vegetarian so does that mean I'm not good enough to apply for an organ donation in your eyes?
