I went with my friend to donate blood today- and I was told I couldn't because my blood pressure was too low to donate- and if I did I would most likely faint. It scared me a bit because I didnt really know much about blood pressure at all- and so came home to research it. Apparently its not terribly bad to have low blood pressure anyway and only matters if it is affecting your everyday activity- dizziness, fainting etc. I feel fine and healthy- so obviously its not affecting me- But I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experince? Or if anyone else has low blood pressure and could give me more info or point me in a particular direction?
My friend of course laughed and said it was because 'I was vegan' >_<
I don't want my friends or people to think being Vegan is unhealthy!
Yeah I got low BP as well, I don't know much about it, but there is nothing that can be taken or done for it, a vet I worked with said that peeps with low BP should increase their water/fluid intake. When I get low BP I just need to lay down for a few mins then I'm fine. It has nothing to do with being vegan, as my friends like to keep saying as well, I had low BP long before I went vegan.
Oh ok! Thanks for the reply!
Yeah- From memory I think I remember doctors saying I had low BP before being vegan as well! I feel a little less scared now knowing that it can be normal! But I am a bit disappointed that I couldn’t donate blood!
I work in this field, having low blood pressure is not a bad thing (obviously bad if its too low) but if its above 100/60 ish you will be fine. Probably the reason they turned you away was because giving blood makes you (well me anyway!) a bit light headed, thats why you already need to be hydrated and they make you have some sugar after. And low BP can cause this also. If you combine the two then they're at risk of having a passed out vegan on their floor!
What is your BP? if you dont mind me asking!

really? I gave today, my interviewer told me my blood pressure of perfect (i always thought i had low blood pressure) and i feel like i have been hit by a truck. I was mega strung out during as well. is that normal?
I've always had low blood pressure even before I was vege. Which is odd, because I come from a family where HBP is common. I do get dizzy sometimes but that only really happens when I haven't drunk enough. My doctor has checked me out a few times and just thinks its me and how I'll always be. She's happier me being this way rather than the rest of my family haha.

Many people consider low blood pressure perfect, especially for a young girl. eg approx. 110/70 would be normal (it is for me anyway). When i was vegetarian (vegan now) I gave bood, my bp and hb wee fine and i still felt like crap after and slept for hours and hours! It just affects some people more than others and particularly for all of us (esp girls) because the iron stores in our blood take longer to get back to 'normal'. Have a baked potato with lentils and spinach for dinner tomorrow
