Im religious and have always been a massive fan of studying all religions. Muslims, jews, christian, catholic, even scientology.. It's all hugely interesting to me, and id love to go to uni for religious studies..
I'm the same as you, except I am not religious. I was raised a Catholic but the rules of the church turned me away from everything, so I am a Secular Humanist now.

I still find other religions fascinating and I do a lot of reading. That is why I said the things I said in the "Halal Meat" thread, because I like to be aware of everyone's point of view.

Another thing I have been told, as to why some people call themselves vegetarian, but still eat fish, is because Jesus ate fish. If Jesus ate it, it makes everything ok. I knew someone like that.

There's no clear interpretation of anything in the bible, that's how christians get away with anything they like.

not only bible bashers dislike homosexuality. i dont think that people base those thoughts on the bible, it's a personal choice whether people agree with it or not. i believe in the bible, and also agree that homosexuality isnt wrong.. i agree in marriage rights for all, but still believe in god.. so it's not only people that believe in god that believe it. and it's a stereo type to think that all religious people believe gay is wrong..

I'm guessing what psychokitten means is that a lot of people use the bible as an argument or an excuse for something.
I really hate it when people bring religion or the bible into a discussion. I can honestly say that I've had discussions with people that go like this:

Talking about marriage equality and gay rights: GOD HATES HOMOSEXUALS AND THEY SHOULD GO ROT IN HELL BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about Veganism: GOD PUT ANIMALS ON THE EARTH FOR US TO EAT AND IT'S OKAY TO EAT ANOTHER LIVING BEING BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about abortion: GOD IS AGAINST ABORTION AND ABORTION IS WRONG BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about racism and sexism: BUT GOD HATES BLACK PEOPLE/WOMEN (yes, I've actually heard that. How stupid!) AND IT'S OKAY TO TREAT THEM AS LESSER PEOPLE BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO.

Basically, a lot of people (not all) like to use religion to justify their actions. You disagree with them? THEN YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!

It can be argued that the Bible says it's OK to eat meat. I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but what does it matter what the Bible says about eating meat (and does it matter if it alludes to the fact that meat is OK?). The Bible also says:

Homosexuals should be killed - ""If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives."  (Leviticus 20:13)

Girls not virgins on their wedding nights should be killed - "But if this charge is true, and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death".  (Deuteronomy  22:20-21)

That God is a jealous ass that often kills people and animals (even though murder is wrong) - ""I will sweep away everything in all your land," says the LORD.  "I will sweep away both people and animals alike. Even the birds of the air and the fish in the sea will die." (Zephaniah 1).

Do what you think is right (i.e. not eating animals) not what an outdated, contradictory, murderous book tells you to do.

I don't have a problem with people having faith in a god, though I really hate the fact that so many people to this day still refer to the bible confused
The book it so horrible, and I don't see how most of the verses can be interpreted in a positive way which is relevant to today's society.

I think you just need to make a decision based on how you feel. If you feel that eating animals is wrong, then you shouldn't eat them =)

Literally anything, the bible contradicts itself on every issue.
Anything you, or anyone, consider morally wrong is okay in at least some of the bible.
My mum is uniting, dad was raised presbyterian, I went to catholic high school, my in-laws are super christian. I dont have anything against religious people, just those who justify stupid things with ridiculous means. That isn't just religious folk either.
