There's no clear interpretation of anything in the bible, that's how christians get away with anything they like.
Get away with anything? Like what, and how?
I'm guessing what psychokitten means is that a lot of people use the bible as an argument or an excuse for something.
I really hate it when people bring religion or the bible into a discussion. I can honestly say that I've had discussions with people that go like this:

Talking about marriage equality and gay rights: GOD HATES HOMOSEXUALS AND THEY SHOULD GO ROT IN HELL BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about Veganism: GOD PUT ANIMALS ON THE EARTH FOR US TO EAT AND IT'S OKAY TO EAT ANOTHER LIVING BEING BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about abortion: GOD IS AGAINST ABORTION AND ABORTION IS WRONG BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO

Talking about racism and sexism: BUT GOD HATES BLACK PEOPLE/WOMEN (yes, I've actually heard that. How stupid!) AND IT'S OKAY TO TREAT THEM AS LESSER PEOPLE BECAUSE GOD SAYS SO.

Basically, a lot of people (not all) like to use religion to justify their actions. You disagree with them? THEN YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!
Sure, yes, all of this and more

Im the first to say the bible has contradictions, I said that. And the women in the Catholic church (that I believe in) and animals arnt treated lesser. The women are respected. Yes, some religions treat women badly and say that it's because of their religion. But, i think everyone can agree that this is all stereo types.. Not every religious group believes everything. Like the Christians shouldnt drink alcohol at all, but I only know 2 Christians that follow that. I think religion is what alot of people live by, yes.. Excuses, I know people think they use it as an excuse. But i dont think its to bold to say that to them its not an excuse, to the people that believe in it its not an excuse, to them- it's just going with what they've brought up with and what they believe in. People are brought up certain ways and they dont want to go against it because it's what they've been taught their whole life, they dont know anything else. So I don't think that people following what they've just been brought up in should have their finger pointed at, because they dont think theyre doing anything wrong. It's how they were brought up young, thats how they were raised.. Whether it is right or wrong in our eyes, to them- thats their religion, and their life. I dont think it's right, but I can respect feeling strongly about a 'religion' because animal rights is majority of our 'religion' so to them, it's a very similar belief and they look at it in the same way we look at helping animals.. Im not here to argue, just to see if you can see their point of view.. They dont know what they're doing is neceserally wrong, because theyre surrounded by people that act and do the exact same things..

So... If you've been brought up doing horrible things, and everyone around you is doing the same things, that's okay?
Really?
Where does change start if not with people going against how they were raised?
I'm the only vegan/vegetarian in my family, my husband is the first atheist in his, does thatmake either of us bad people?
I understand where youre coming from, but I personally am not trying to attack religions of any kind, but have seen from experience, people using the christian bible or other relevant book as an excuse or justification to do stupid things and claim some kind of immunity. Non religious people do it too, sure, but the original post was about the bible.

what an interesting discussion. My point on the Bible is that I dont actually think its as bad as we think, I actually have reverence for the Bible. I believe you need to read the Bible under the influence of the right spirit. Though I must say sometimes it does come across as quite condemning , the parts filled with love personally show me that the fear of God is actually respect in that we know he does not like what causes us and others harm. For instance on the homosexuality issue...I believe God is trying to convey protection about the topic so that people dont do it. I personally dont have anything against gay people, but I dont however think its natural. If it were they would be able to procreate and reproduce the way nature intended. I suppose what I have come to realize from this conversation is that God is nature and with this I think you need to work within the laws of nature. Ive come to the conclusion that if meat and animal products arent good for you physically and endanger the planet then its likely to be that God does not want people to consume meat the way this is happening at this point in time.

If that is the case, why can't some couples have children and they have to resort to IVF? That isn't natural.

I think some people weren't meant to have children, if that is God's will.

Just saying happy

Just pointing out there is homosexuality within the animal kingdom, animals live about as naturally as you can get so I don't see how the "gay is unnatural" argument works. I know you're not trying to offend or anything I'm just putting it out there.  peace_out

Exactly! Homosexuality is found in something like 450+ species. Homophobia is found in only one - human. Which is unnatural now?

Love and sex are the most natural things imaginable - it does not matter whether that love or sexual desire is for the opposite sex or not. Gay or straight love - it's all the same, i.e. natural.
