Also the pure fact that she said "When my dogs can no longer run I find good homes for them" Suggest it is alllll business, no real love of the animal.
Its not business, its fun, and for the love of the dog. If I can't find a suitable home, I hold onto that dog for a while. and if I can;t, it either stays with me, or is HUMANELY EUTHANISED!
"LOVE FOR THE DOG"
and humanely euthanised.. do not GO TOGETHER!! You cannot LOVE AN ANIMAL, AND JUST SAY 'OH IT'LL GET EUTHANISED'

Gee, I wish someone could just bash some sense into you. Killing a perfectly healthy dog is NOT humane. I wish I can just take the dogs from you.
*sits here waiting for Kunnigan to leave, because it's obvious they will. People like him/her have been on Unleashed before. They make an account, post a thread, make some posts to cause a reaction and then in the next 24 hours they're gone. Just gotta wait it out, sit back and laugh at all the ignorant posts*
No joke. You need to be shot. I don't care if admin boots me off of here. Killing a perfectly good animal is the cruelest thing you could say on a forum full of avid animal lovers :S I don't know what you think your doing for your animals, imagine saying to a kid of yours "IM GONNA MAKE YOU RACE UNTIL YOUR NO GOOD THEN IM GONNA KILL YOU"
No human should go through it, so no animal should either.
Well, if one of my greyhounds can't run anymore, I find a good home for them.
Hi Kunnigan, and welcome to Unleashed
The above quote is problematic in itself- you are using an animal for profit and then abandoning him/her when they can no longer earn you money. The people on this forum take the psychological and physiological welfare of animals very seriously, and that's where our views may differ. To you maybe they are 'just dogs' who 'love running' like horses who 'love racing'. The similarity lies in the conditions of a race horse and race dog- are they mentally stimulated (off track)? Are they loved? Are they permitted social interaction? Do they have a secure pack?
No.
It's good to see you care enough to come on here and ponder about differing perspectives of an industry you are a part of.
I'd like to quote another Unleashed member from another thread on Greyhound Racing

We all know the horror behind horse racing but don't forget about the dogs too.
Greyhounds bred for racing usually don't have a great life to begin with. They are kept with their siblings & mother at birth but once weaned, usually kept next to their siblings in seperate cages to get used to the kennel life. When they're older, greyhounds live in these kennels. Usually taken out twice a day to do their business and then placed back in (unless its training day on the track)
If a greyhound isn't suitable for the track they are killed- just like slow race horses. Though they should be euthanaised humanely, many breeders do not want to waste the money and instead shoot them, beat them over the head or just leave them to starve. Retired racing greyhounds could come to the same end too.
Last year I met a wonderful organisation called "Greyhound as Pets" who are willing to take unwanted greyhounds from breeders at a cheaper price than the price of euthanasia. They are also there to educate the public that greyhounds aren't aggressive animals- though they're trained to chase a rabbit, some are friendly to smaller animals and many are compatible with cats. Greyhounds also don't need to be exercised like on the tracks, usually they're quite happy to sleep and go for a gentle walk just like any other breed of dog.
If you know someone who is looking for a gentle, bigger dog who is loyal and affectionate and doesn't come with the "dog" smell (due to no undercoat) then I suggest you tell them about the lovely greyhound groups there are around Australia. Tell them about the cruelty behind greyhound racing and how greyhounds CAN and SHOULD be pets, not race dogs.
Animal welfare resources are used up all over Australia on rehoming unwanted and 'non-profitable' greyhounds, aswell. This isn't fair on anyone, least of all the abandoned dog.
whats wrong with greyhound racing?! omg your serious?
here are a few facts:
-Tens of thousands of greyhounds are disposed of by the racing industry in Australia some 25,000 are born each year
-Of these dogs only about half reach naming and training age. Thousands of puppies and young dogs are routinely killed.
-Many thousands more will fail to chase, will not be fast enough or will be injured while racing and will also be destroyed.
-Those that go on to race will have short careers. They will finish racing between the ages of 2 and 4.
-The average life span for a greyhound is 12 years although only a handful see out their natural lives. Less than 500 a year go through the adoption programme.
-The industry has no accountability for the countless thousands of dogs that disappear each year; no one knows what happens to them
-Up to 1000 a year are exported to Asia for racing, countries such as Korea and China. These are countries known for their huge illegal trade in dog meat for human consumption
-Many greyhounds are seeing out their days in the confinement of Laboratories and Universities and are being subjected to cruel experiments
-Many greyhounds are trained using live animals (baiting) such as rabbits and possums even though this practice is illegal.
-There is no accountability for these dogs .All greyhound pups are recorded and ear tattooed at birth and yet after this there is no record of them or where they go.
How do i Know of this you might ask? well my grandparents use to be big in the greyhound racing industry, they use to compete and win in the national race's, breed champion dogs for the oversea's markets and compete all over the world with there dogs. I have seen videos and photo's of them and there dogs. and when my pop was alive he use to tell me of everything that happened in the greyhound industry.
