Some more Australian greyhound racing facts:

The killing of Australian Greyhounds

-Up to 20,000 greyhounds are killed in Australia annually

- Many greyhounds are disposed of by extremely cruel methods as the cheapest way is the best way for many people involved in the industry. Beating, drowning and shooting are common methods of disposal. The cutting of throats has also been reported. In some countries hanging is a preferred method.

-Many Greyhounds are used as an ingredient of blood and bone.

- Greyhounds have been found shot and still alive in dumps and even buried alive with their ears removed to avoid identification as was the case in Tasmania is September 2004 where the unfortunate dog was still alive; her ears hacked off to avoid identification from the tattoos. She was destroyed to end her terrible suffering.

- There have been many cases of greyhounds found starving and in less than adequate housing

- A example of how many greyhounds die : Kamaksan, an Australian greyhound who collapsed after a race and was left to die - this happens a fair bit, i have herd this and seen this for my own eyes.

Some facts of Australia's greyhound exports to Asia.

- Australia is the main player in creating, promoting and encouraging greyhound racing in Asia. Countries such as Korea, China, Vietnam and Macau. It is of great concern that Australia is exporting greyhounds to these countries. There are no provisions made for these dogs when they finish racing in Asia and no chance of re homing. Countries such as Korea and China are notorious for their barbaric illegal thriving trade in dog meat for human consumption.

- These dogs are killed in the cruellest possible ways as many Koreans believe that the rush of adrenalin through the dogs body as it dies in agony will increase human virility. Hundreds/Thousands of greyhounds  each year are electrocuted, strangled, skinned alive or bludgeoned to death in Korea. This is the fate of some Australian greyhounds. Others have been found terrorised and wandering the streets starving in South Korea. Dogs that started their lives in Australia, and were betrayed by individuals involved in the racing industry because they were not quite fast enough for our tracks.

So whats wrong with greyhound racing?

Please no name calling or nasty words on the forum.  sad
Can't we be a friendly, peaceful, informative group of veg*ns?
happy

Members here have clearly pointed out why greyhound racing is wrong. In my personal opinion, exploiting any animal is wrong. Whether it be for entertainment, food, clothes, etc.

Humans should appreciate animals for what they are and not what they can get from them.

Thank you! Yes, name calling and abusive comments are against our house rules. Please be nice. Telling someone they are 'wrong', 'cruel' or a 'moron' is not going to help them understand your point of view. In fact it is more likely to make them want to reject anything constructive you might have to say.

If we want to win people over to a more compassionate way of living, then being angry, insulting and confrontational in our advocacy is never going to work. All that does is create a divide between veg*ns and the rest of the public and makes it easier for people to dismiss veg*ns as angry and unreasonable.

If you have, or are considering calling someone a 'moron', please read this post: http://www.unleashed.org.au/community/forum/topic.php?t=4279 And then, instead of insulting people, why not use this as an opportunity to practice your advocacy skills.

I was talking to the security guard at a jumps race I was filming one day and he asked my "Why jumps racing and not the trots or greyhound racing?". After I answered he told me "I train greyhounds and if the dogs no good I just shoot it, that's just the way it is." He wasn't trying to get me angry or annoyed or anything. We were just having a conversation.

Greyhound racing is clearly full of animal lovers...

That last sentence was so unintelligent  laugh
What I would say to the person:
Do you actually believe that? If you shoot any animal because it's not entertaining you enough anymore, even when it is a perfectly healthy animal, that you not only are not an animal lover, and if the whole greyhound racing industry thinks like that, and believes that it is okay, than they clearly have no interest for the animal, and so are not animal lovers, and so the whole industry is a cruel community, simply getting together to compare the speed of dogs (by the way stupid and pointless in itself), but you also insult ACTUAL animal lovers by considering yourself one of us. furious rolleyes rolleyes yawn  ninja

AndrewF was being sarcastic with the last sentence. I don't think the greyhound racer actually claimed to be an animal lover

Did these animals tell you they like racing? ......
Anyway, your original question - "What's wrong with greyhound racing?"
Answer - everything.

Just because you feed your animals does not make you the dog whisperer or a saint, animals have RIGHT to food and water.

Desexing is not a cruel act. It's a sensible one. I think i'd rather desex a dog then put one down because its not cute enough for adoption.
