It really annoys me how bitchy vegetarians/vegans can be. Its not a competion, if you stop eating a certain meat then good for you!
Don't become a vego/vegan for the glory of it. Do it for the animals!
WOO!
I hate some vegans. For some reason they think their superior and better than the rest. Bleaugh drives me nuts, and makes me not want to associate myself with it
I can see both sides of the story, but it ultimately depends on your personal reasons for your diet.
I was a vegetarian for years, not wanting to eat the flesh of a dead animal is reason enough. Vegetarians should not be criticised for the choice not to eat something that was directly killed for them. It can be a very tough choice for some to make in our 'meat hungry' society.
Veganism (IMO) is about being cruelty free, in diet and lifestyle. Obviously we all know that eating dairy is cruel but the animal has not been killed for the single reason for food, it can only be food once. a dairy cow can live a lot longer and provide much more 'food' than one beef cow. so making it more efficient. I know that sounds awful, just trying to justify what I thought as a vege before the research and making the change.
Its interesting to know why people are vegetarian, but not vegan. Is it a taste thing? or not eating flesh?
The good thing is you don't need or have to understand it. People make their own choices for their own reasons, suited to their own circumstances. For some it may be being vegan, some vegetarian, some pesco. Each does their bit in reducing their impact on the planet and minimising their support of animal cruelty.
I really detest the veg*n competition ie I'm more veg*n than you. It serves no purpose other than turning people off the cause or at least turns them off you. Just be happy with the decisions you've made, lead by example and leave the rest well enough alone.
My pet hate is 'animal lovers' who love to also eat meat...but only 'humane' slaughter ofcourse. SOMEONE PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEE explain to me what the $%$#@#& 'HUMANE' slaughter is?
How can something being 'humanely' killed? 'humanely' slaughtered?
Just as I thought it would, this thread has been completely derailed.
Everyone should take a deep breath and re-read the OP and the title of this thread. 'I don't get vegetarianism' does not translate (even loosely) into any of the following:
-I hate vegetarians
-Vegetarianism does nothing for animals and is entirely pointless
-I'm a better person than you are because I'm a vegan - so let's turn this into a me vs you debate
Arguing semantics won't change that.
I simply pointed out that vegetarians consume animal products from industries that are arguably more cruel than the meat industry which they shun, so the discussion should have been about why is there this blatant contradiction in the reasoning of vegetarians? They oppose one form of cruelty (meat) yet condone others (eggs, dairy)... so why?
I understand people trying to dissociate the meat from the dairy/egg industries, but the end results are always the same: cruelty.
On top of the questions I've asked above, I'd simply like to ask vegetarians why they need calf milk or a hens egg? Rather relevant questions I feel (on topic, in other words :p ).

Im vegetarian, not vegan. And I drink soy, and don't eat cheese.. So i don't consume dairy in it's own form. If i go out to a resteraunt and it has dairy in it, i probably won't avoid it.. But i wont cook it in my food.. I have no excuse for it, because i dont have a family against it or anything. At the moment, i'm just still getting used to being veg.
