I think if your just running into the shops, it shouldnt be a huge deal- a window thats open a little bit does give enough air for them to breath. You dont even need windows open technically. There's enough air in the car. How often do you ride in a car with the windows up? Aslong as they're not in direct sunlight, and they're not in the car for a long period of time- i think it's okay.. I wouldnt tell everyone out there to go and do it. But i have done it before with Cargo. Id hate for someone to call the rspca on me, it's not illegal.. My dog gets treated like a king, he doesnt mind being left in the car for 10 minutes while I run into the shops. Ive only ever done it when on the way to the vet, and when we were going to the beach and i went to the shops to get some balls and stuff for him at the beach.. I dont think its as big of an issue as people make out it too be..

It's more of a concern in summer as the temperature inside the car can rise quite high, even with the windows down.
I have left my dog in the car before but only if I am going to be no longer than 15 minutes, and especially not on a hot day. Any longer than 15 or so minutes then I think that it's cruel.
But yeah leaving your dog in the car is only really bad on hot days, or if you are going to be gone a while. If people are going to take their dog and leave them in the car for an hour while they go somewhere then they should have just left them at home.

EDIT: I think leaving your dog inside a car is only illegal on hot days? Though I'm not sure.

Oh no i agree, if it's hot, totally not cool.. The only times ive ever had cargo in the car he's been in like, under ground car parks.. and it's never been longer than 15 minutes.. I wouldnt leave him there for a long time, cos as you said- shouldve just left them at home.. He doesn't go in the car very often anyway, so it's not a big deal. But as someone mentioned, id probably watch the car to see when the owner came back.. I dont think id say anything, cos as ive said, ive done it myself.. Id just make sure the dog was okay.. happy

What you should do is call the NRMA! 13 11 11. I work for them and we come out usually within 5mins to get the dog out of the car without causing damage to the car. If there is trouble we smash the window. In this situation (usually they'd say its not their car but there are no windows down etc) we would also call the police to attend the scene to confront the angry car driver and so the police and discuss with him/her the punishment for animal cruelty. happy

EDIT: If you are ever in this situation, and for some reason you are unable to get on the phone and if your judgement you feel its right to smash the window; make sure you don't just smash it as glass may hit the animal in the car and actually harm them. Plus, you may hurt yourself. Also, you may then be held legally responsible to fix damages done to the drivers car. I assume this will go down in court, but yea, its entirely possible.

Yea, it's not about running out of air. The temperature in a car on a hot day rises VERY fast where there is no AC running or air flow.

I remember sitting in my bf's car whilst he got out to wash it during one summer. It got so hot I started feeling ill.

There used to be a tv commercial about leaving dogs in cars on a hot day!! Maybe they will bring it back for summer. happy

yeah, if your parked right outside the shop, just to go grab something if its not too hot thats okay. i only wish i could drive. i have to walk everywhere and take the dogs or they jump the fence and follow me. lol

when i have to post stuff its a nightmare trying to hold them and open the box and put the big envelope in :/ omg i had to go to centrelink. i just tied them to these posts things for 2 mins my heart was beating .......

BUT remember in the news that person left two dogs in the car, it was so hot ones face & teeth were competely smashed from ramming the windows and the other had suffocated.

THIS is why it is so discouraged.

I dont drive.. Generally speaking in all the events i mentioned it wouldve been my boyfriends car and him driving.. I took cargo to the shops with me today, first time I tied him up infront of shops i FREAKED OUT! Now, im not to bad, there's a spot i always put him that is tied to a chair in the shade and he doesn't mind.. Today a bunch of little girls came up and was like "CAN WE PAT YOUR DOG!?!" and they wouldnt go away, haha.

Dudddee the time i mentioned that he was in an under ground car park for 15 minutes, i was in centerlink too hahahaahh... Me and mum had to go to centerlink for me, and we had to go get cargo's "balls" checked cosh e just got dexesed..
