Your title has the answer.

The fact that it says 'pitbulls' and not any other bread of dog reveals the temperament/tendency for this dog to be aggressive. If only notoriously aggressive or of the tendency to be threatening. When a dog owner is looking for a dog, they are looking for something to fill a gap in their lives. Most people with children would steer away from pitbulls, rightly or wrongly... but... owners who are looking for a security option... would seek out these traits in their dog, esp. that it is easily trained to one own and to be protective of one owner.

Most people seeking a dog like this, will put it through training and there are specific methods and things a dog will respond to and the dog owner has to take on a temperament or an assertive manner of dominance to command the dog properly. You will notice some dogs will always be watching situations to see who is the dominant person... maybe in the way of 'ok so who will be giving me my next meal as the omega tonight?'. My dog does it because he is descendant from pack dogs I think, Japanese Spitz looks like a mini husky... but he is always keeping an eye out on who is the alpha in our house... which for humans isn't relative... and he will draw conclusions from situations... like if I am annoyed at someone... he will be figuring out the situation. Though if I am sad he will often walk up kind of hesitantly with his ears down just to see if i'm ok, my last dog did that much more obviously, kind of half wagging his tail half coming over to say hi.

But anyways, so call it selective breeding, but pitbulls being bad is in proportion of it being a tendency of the dog to be expressed or observed as looking mean... which is what those owners want... so it is in part the owners lack of cautions that can cause the animals to be a dog and not play the role as lawfully as the owner would hope. But you're right to think of this dog was always thought of as cute and children grew up with it, you'd have a really lovely pitbull, always happy and not much aggression towards anything.

And you could argue if it did snap in a situation and or... it became very protective of its owner/people it knows... this would be result of the traits of owners in its heritage... maybe their training or provoking other tendencies in the animal to be its disposition.

But still... it is a co-evolution thing... the pitbulls are bad and the owners are bad to the bone  ~ p~

IT was a cross breed, not a pit bull. There is no pit bull association in Australia as people who own them don't want to show them, which is why the government amongst other people go after that breed.
Pit bulls are known as nanny dogs, really good with children... this savage attacking stuff is a load of bullsh*t. Sure there may be a pit bull or two who have attacked but it's just how they've been brought up as to how they react socially.

And that guy they sent in to check the breed does not know what he's doing. "It's too tall to be a staffy so it must be a pitbull" what a load of cobswallop.

It's the owner.

I have a staffy. He's been with my family since my youngest brother (now in high school) was one. His name is Chew, and in the past thirteen years he has been sat on, had his tail pulled, been trodden on and even had a little boy stick his finger up poor Chew's bum! In short, he has been exposed to children. Not once has he EVER attacked or even growled aggressively at a human- not even that little brat with the wandering finger.

He is the most harmless creature I've ever encountered. Treat your companion animal with love and respect, and not even the awful antics of children will make them attack.

The RSPCA Hobart has Pitbull X puppies available. If I didn't have two dogs already, I'd go and adopt one.
