VegePooch is an independent AU-based supplier of vegan and vegetarian foods, treats and accessories for companion animals. Because we have a passion to create healthier lifestyles for our own animal companions, we started the VegePooch website with the desire to make healthy alternative products readily available to all pet guardians.

We pride ourselves on offering nutritious, cruelty-free, plant-based food items that have been proven safe and nutritious over the past two decades. NONE of our products are tested on animals, and NONE of our products contain any slaughterhouse ingredients, dairy or eggs. We have scrutinized the ingredients to determine their specific function and health benefits. No bi-products or other scary and unnecessary ingredients allowed!

We have gone to great lengths to research a variety of vegan and vegetarian foods and have selected brands we are confident you can trust. The companies from whom we’ve chosen to source our products share our beliefs and concern for promoting the welfare and happiness of all animals. We are proud to present you with these quality brands - all under one roof - for your convenience and for your furry family member’s health and happiness!

The other company in Australia which offers vegan cat and dog food is of course Veganpet( http://veganpet.com.au).

Veganpet is a complete and balanced dry pet food that contains no animal product or bi-products. It provides a real alternative to processed animal foods and is priced comparitively. Scientific studies confirm Veganpet’s suitability for maintaining a healthy diet for both cats and dogs, young and old.

Just thought I'd let you know that there's a new company out there...

oh yes, i think ive been on that site - cant really afford either brand for my cats :/

the one i buy now is only $12 and almost lasts two weeks.

Its definetly worth it for the animals ...100%.....but i really dont have the money.

I'll stick to making my own vegan dog food and hopefully something cheaper for cats will come up...

I remember get a trial pack of Vegepet but decided against it because of its price and the fact that it's made overseas.

I just noticed too that on the most expensive one, Vegepet Super Premium Dog Food, it says "Wheat, soy and corn-free for sensitive dogs."

Yet in the ingredients:

"Fine Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Vegetable Proteins (Soy, Maize)"

http://www.vegepooch.com.au/index.php/products/dog-food/vegepet-super-premium-dog-food-adult-45.html

Someone doesn't know that maize is corn and what about the soy? I didn't check the others.

There's plenty of pages on Google warning that corn isn't good for dogs (nor most cereals for that matter).

Personally, I don't believe in veg*n diets for cats and dogs.  If you decide to have one for a pet then I think you're obligated to feed it with what is natural for it.

Also "***This product .... has not been tested on animals." Hmmm ... how do they know dogs will eat it then?  happy

Re: Vegepet. I'm pretty sure that it's made in Australia and Veganpet definitely is (except the canned food is NZ made).

Also, the allergy statement is there because the proteins are hydrolyzed so they minimize allergic reactions.

I am a firm believer in vegan diets for dogs as they are nutritonal omnivores and as such can thrive on a vegan diet.
Here's an article by someone who has 30 years experience feeding their dogs this way: http://thevegantruth.blogspot.com/search/label/Dogs%20-%20Vegan

I agree that it's controversial feeding a cat a vegan diet as cats are obligate carnivores. However, although certainly not natural (although neither is the domestication of animals or what they're fed by most people) synthetic versions of all nutrients they require are available and as such vegan food has been formulated.

If cats and dogs can and do thrive this way it can only help bring about a vegan world and is the most humane thing. If your dog (unlikely) or your cat (more likely) cannot thrive on a vegan diet than I certainly think other options should be investigated.

And yes, rabbits eat a vegan diet but I think they're trying to offer food from an ethical company versus a questionable one.

Also there is ANOTHER brand of vegan dog food out there but NOT cat food: http://www.biopetonline.com.au/productsVeganDog.html

Actually, we find Vegepooch to be quite good!

Our dog is allergic to "wheat, glutten and corn" and we had to switched her to Super Premium ADT-24. She's been on it for more than 8months now, never had any problem since best decision we've made.

As for the price it really depends who you are comparing it to, but I find they price quite reasonable.

Veganpet (2kg) is $21.40

Vegepooch (2kg) is $22.80

I don't see much of a huge different, but now we buy it in bulk (7.5kg bag). If you worry of the cost try mixing it with rice & veggies. For us one 7.5kg bag can last approx 2months, plus occassionally we get 10% discount coupon & free doggy treats as they regular.

I dont think its the meat they need but rather the nutrients in the meat... which can be found elsewhere..

anyway, everyone to their own opinion

I'm fairly certain that it's imported. Vegepooch are only suppliers of the product. Whenever we've ordered it, the bags and boxes have come in another language..

Yeah, it’s true! I’m certain they’ve imported it from Taiwan, I remembered they’ve mentioned something about the owner dog were allergic to some local brands. So she had to seach around and that’s how she came to open up the business.

At first it was one of my concerns, but they’ve reassured me that all theirs products are natural and not irradiated. Plus the products really speaks for itself, Barbie gradually stop itching and her hairs has also stop falling out.

I’ve dealt with them for awhile now and found they company to be quite honest and extremely helpful when we needed informations. I’m just glad there are more option for dogs with special needs, because really I can not bear to feed my pet those stinky meat-based can food it really makes me wants to puke.
