It's great that everyone here is putting forward ideas on how to deal with the issue.

The situation with the kangaroos at Eden Hills was actually really distressing. I followed the story closely. In the beginning some of the locals holding vigil, would regularly find kangaroos that had several gunshot wounds (not the head) and who were left to die very slowly and in agony.

This is what I believe to be the biggest issue when it comes to killing kangaroos (btw the annual kangaroo 'cull' in Australia, is the largest land based slaughter in the world - involving millions of animals - read more about it here http://www.animalsaustralia.org/issues/kangaroo_shooting.php) along with the fact that a lot of the killing is done purely for the commercial market (meat and skins) - not population control. The killing goes on in such remote locations that it's impossible to regulate, and even if shooters do kill a roo with one shot (which many don't) if that roo has a baby, *the law states* it can be swung against a tow bar to destroy its brain .....I mean ....really - that is beyond horrific!

I think (almost) all of us here agree that killing kangaroos is not the way to control the population - you'll never kill all of them, and if conditions are good numbers will quickly climb again...

What is needed is a long term solution that uses several different methods in conjunction with each other (imho!) ...

Like fertility control, natural and un-natural barriers to prevent them getting to certain areas, relocation where possible, and as Maggie suggested, limiting resources.

It's just a matter of the powers that be recognising that simply letting loose with guns is ineffective AND cruel. My ideas above above may take a lot of energy to implement, but if all done at the same time, I think they's be more effective in the long term ....

That was a long post ....but do you think that would work?
And then everyone would be happy! happy Especially the kangaroos!

And lastly - MASSIVE kudos to the Australian Society for Kangaroos in holding that vigil for SO long. They have prevented so much cruelty and should be commended! clap clap

I presume that when you say limiting their resources you mean food and water.  So you starve and perish them to death to control their numbers.  My won't that be humane and a pretty sight.  Get out here where they are a real problem, stop talking through your hat, be realistic.  No of course you won't do that, you will remain in your ivory tower preaching absolute rot.

there is a BIG difference between starving and having an adequate amount to survive..
if there isn't enough food to feed them all if they reproduce, THEY WON'T REPRODUCE..

and if the kangaroos are such a inconvenience to you
F**KING MOVE
i assure you these animals were here long before us...
it is their land, NOT yours

Cassie you are such a rude person. Why don't you stop assuming no one here has a clue what they're talking about, simply because they don't live on a farm. You don't need to live in France to know the language and culture.

I have no problem you being here if you're genuinely interested in expressing your views, respectively, and to learn about other peoples views. But you seem to just want to create friction.

You really think that the only solution is to shoot them, and that we shouldn't even discuss other possible solutions? I believe there are other ways to solve the problem (if ones exists) besides shooting them, if the government had the will. People are simply putting foward ideas.

I won't check this thread again.

And the above post is not rude.  I'm afraid it reeks of 'the best form of defence is attack'.  Sadly many of you don't have a clue and neither are you willing to listen to a balance debate or any opinion that does not concur with your mainstream opinion on this website forum.  Anyways cheers for now.

Wolf you would do well to remember that 'swearing is an outward expression of inward stupidity'.  Take a chill pill and speak with control next time.  I am sure you are a most intelligent young woman.

Oh boohoo Nathan.  You won't check this thread again because I dare to question the stance that AA takes on Kangaroo culling.  Take a teaspoon of cement and toughen up mate.

swearing is just words and alot of the time they are used to emphasize a point.
what are the most powerful words? swear words
so me using the eff word to emphasize a point does not make me in any way stupid.
and if that is the only retaliation you have, you must know what i am saying is correct..

The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies and the kind of person who says swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary usually have a pretty poor vocabulary themselves... The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest or -is just a f**ing lunatic... I haven't met anybody who's truly shocked at swearing, really, they're only shocked on behalf of other people. Well, you know, that's preposterous... or they say 'it's not necessary'. As if that should stop one doing it! It's not necessary to have coloured socks, it's not necessary for this cushion to be here, but is anyone going to write in and say 'I was shocked to see that cushion there, it really wasn't necessary'? No, things not being necessary is what makes life interesting -the little extras in life.
... BUT let's get back on topic and not completely wander into insults and slap-fights.

They won't starve, they adapt. This was pointed out. They will stop breeding so the kangaroos that already exist have enough food. Also, I do not have an ivory tower, because I'm vegan and ivory poaching is a most cruel practice   peace
