Today whilst at the supermarket I told my mum that I needed new toothpaste, so whilst looking at the toothpaste I said how annoying it was that they didn't have White Glo, which I know to be vegan. My mum said, "What's wrong with Colgate?" and I told her that it was tested on animals, whereas White Glo is not. She said, "So what if it's tested on animals? It's not hurting them. Don't worry about it." She refused to believe me when I listed all the cruelty inflicted on animals used for testing, so I said "Can I show you a video?" and she said, "No!" because I think she could tell I was going to show her disgusting videos of animal testing, yet when I said, "Do you believe me then?" she said no. I said well then let me show you the video, and she said no. Hopefully that's not confusing  confused

I can't wait for 2 and a half years when I'll be able to get my P's and be able to go out on my own search for cruelty-free products.

Anyone else have any problems growing up with their parents, or with their friends choosing to ignore the cruelty inflicted on animals?

I'd just like to say good on you for standing up to her!
It takes courage and passion for what you believe in to do that.

It's safe to say you will always have people in your life who are like that.
They know what's going on, but won't face it because they are afraid they will have to change the whole way they think. (silly, because we have and we are fine. lol)

Oh, and next time, say "If something is going in my mouth, I must be comfortable with it."  x)

do you have legs?

you should traverse to the shops with them on your own happy

also... online chemists.. etc or research where sells the one's you want if is problem,
woolworths herbal toothpaste?

for some reason I thought it would be hard to find toothpaste with no animal products but the lady at a chemist in renmark rang up mclean and they contacted the manufacturer and then finished by saying most of the other brands have no animal ingredients either.

hmm animal testing...

if it isn't tested on animals... isn't it just tested on humanimals

I think you can get quite a few that need no testing because they have safe ingredients. Using toothpaste that needs testing first... Must have GREAT ingredients lol.

Your doing good, keep up what you are doing. The fact your mum finds those videos disturbing, even if she won't watch them, means she probably cares a lot deep down, and you might be the one to bring it up.

My mum went vegan a week after me, soon followed by my dad, so I am pretty lucky when it comes to shopping. We're like a little vegan team happy

Oh yeah! My mum's just the same. I know though that my mum believes it really she's just choosing not to because it's easier to forget about it than do something about it. Whereas for me, it's harder knowing what happens out there and doing nothing. I couldn't live with myself.

There is the brand "Red Seal" from NZ, some herbal stuff (and for the life of me I can't remember and can't be bothered walking to my bathroom to check) but it comes in a white box with green writing. It's vegan and about the same price, if not sometimes cheaper I've found. It's usually on the bottom shelf so look hard, but it's there!
Also Woolie's own brand of toothpaste is vegan too happy the Macro stuff.

I guess just be grateful that your parents are as lenient as they are! When I was living at home (which was until I turned 18), I was forced to eat meat as long as I lived under my parents household. I probably had to eat 4 or 5 meals with meat per week. When it came to things not tested on animals and such, I got stuck with whatever I was bought, even though I would tell mum what to buy me. And she would absolutely not let me become vegetarian, even when I offered to cook all my own meals and such!

It sucked, but now I've been veg for nearly a year. Just stick it out until you can get away from it all and do everything yourself. Unfortunately, as much as you do want to support the brands that offer cruelty-free products, you buying 1 packet of colgate as a one-off will not really make a difference at all.
