30 Day Vegan Challenge?!

Howdy, happy

So yes I am a meat eater and do consume other animal products. Saying that I haven't had meat in about 2 weeks. I tried to eat it last week and nearly vomited everywhere. I get physically ill now even though I have never loved meat and would always eat my veggies first as a young girl (I'm 26yrs old). Give me veggies any day. Never been a big fan of meat, gross. Yet I still eat it or try to. I hopefully want to live a life free of animal products in the future.

So in the mail yesturday I got the Animal Lib Vic newsletter and the 30 day vegan challenge card was in there too. I then look to my family for words of support to do this but they claim my health will get worse. They are never positive about anything like this but I can understand their worry for me.   I've had very very low iron levels, low vitamin D and B12 too.. Been a big problem for me.. I was quite ill a couple of years ago and my body is still trying to correct itself. Also I have had to change my diet due to food intolerances so I cant have much fruit, I now drink soy due to lactose intolerance, I really shouldnt consume wheat/gluten and anything containing sugar (although there is natural sugars in natural foods so thats okay). I did have an aunty who was vegetarian for about 12yrs but started consuming meat etc again as her health suffered?? Not sure about that. I dont know if I believe that. I have alot of people who live in a world where they think all that they consume is safe but its full of chemicals and hormones anyway.

I really want to give the 30 day challenge a go. I will start mid next week. I just need some support and people to say that it is a good thing. I hope my health improves doing this. And of course I'm giving it a go for the animals.

Thanks.

Owl. happy

Wow, I've had to edit this like 5 times due to all my typo's. Ha.

Hi. Congrats on giving up meat, and I really hope it all goes well for you. Unleashed is a great place for advice and encouragement, so I hope you find it helpful here.

I wrote a thread on vegan nutrition that might clear things up for you.

And if you're worried about iron, good plant sources include:

Broccoli
Asian greens
Almonds
Lentils and other legumes
Silverbeet
Wholegrains

To up  your iron levels, make sure you have plenty of vitamin C in your food (which is abundant in most of these sources anyway), and steer clear of tea, coffee, red wine and spinach roughly two hours either side of an iron rich meal.

Good veg nutrition comes with practise, much like good veg cooking. You'll gradually build up a sound knowledge base and before you know it, you'll be schooling your unsupportive family on the numerous health benefits of vegetarian and vegan living.

happy Good luck. You'll do great.

The Sair Scare oh thanks so much. I feel a little more relaxed now. I guess when anything is new it takes time to find your feet. I am the type of person that worries too much so that never helps. tongue
I do enjoy a coffee so thanks for letting me know that, hehe. I have been looking through the posts here and it seems like a very helpful place with nice people so its all good. I will have a look at that thread about vegan nutrition too. It's the best thing for me to do and its time for change. Thanks again. happy
