about feeding their pets meat?

i have two cats who both eat whiskers can food and they also have cat biscuits (whatever brand they are into at the time as they are fussy eaters)  rolleyes

and it makes me feel bad that im contributing to the meat industry.. sad

but cats unlike dogs (omni's) are carnivores as well so they are MEANT to eat meat..

i know there is vegan cat food out there but one can is atleast 4x what i currently pay. and im only a uni student with a casual job, and i also have 6 rabbits and a duck to feed..

does anyone else feel bad?
what does everyone else feed their cats?

I don't feed my cats and dogs meat, but my dad does.
My pets actually prefer my vegetarian food for some reason! happy
I feed my dog veggie burgers, and my cats like melons.
I've noticed that ALL pets like corn and melon!

I do have a sense of guilt when I feed the ferret and cats meat but they are Carnivors - feeding them on a Plant based diet would be like feeding a lion veggies, it's unnatural.

unlike us they need meat to be healthy. I think the best thing you can do about it is source the meat from farms where the Animal was free ranged. As much as I feel uncomfortable feeding and handling the meat I wouldn't feed them on a veggie diet just to suit myself. Ferrets cannot digest plant matter properly and neither can cats.

I also let my cats go outside becouse they would kill each other if they stayed inside 24/7 ... They bring home birds and rats all the time that they have killed and are about to eat. I don't like it but I wouldn't want to deny them there natural behavoiurs

cats  like melons? i think my cats would turn their noses up to that.

and getting the meat from a good source is a good idea, but the only problem is that one of my cats is REALLY fussy, i know she doesnt like chicken breast as my boyfriend gave the cats some on numerous occasions and only joey ate it. Tess only eats whiskers and only the casserole sort, sometimes she will nibble at the minced sort. her fave thing to eat is biscuits. maybe she'd eat mince meat though.. rolleyes

but i do understand that that is what they naturally eat and unlike us its actualyl a natural instinct for them. they both have day time access to outside as we live rural so dont really have to worry alot about cars or people, but i lock them in at night for peace of mind and because wild animals come out more at night and so hopefully by bringing the cats in at night they eat less wildies..

If you feel really bad about the meat that you're feeding your companion animals... have you ever considered asking your local butchers if they have scrap meats which you could get from them instead? This way at least your animals are eating real meat (not tinned crap) and you're using up scraps of meat that wouldn't be sold for human consumption.

cats are designed to eat meat, there's no real way of getting around that - Both of my cats eat meat.

I always feel guilty. I know exactly what the animal has gone through to feed my dog and no animal deserves that. But right now I am too poor to feed him a good vegan diet and I want the best for him. My hopes and dreams are to live on animal sanctuary. Only then will I rescue cats because I hope to humanely fish in a natural water way for them. I don't want other people's bloody hands doing the dirty work for me. If I am to have a carnivorous animal then it is my duty to provide them in a sustainable and ethical way or they may as well live in the wild. Just remember though, tinned food is generally processed junk and they may as well be eating carrots. Pet food productions do not care about your animal, they just care about money. If you buy a tin of dog food an submerge it in water it will expand to twice its size. Rice is of no nutritional value to an animal and corn is not either. It is just cheap! I am not sure about cat food products but I would say they are similar.

well i know tin stuff isnt the best nutrition wise, but its got in it what it needs to have to make sure cats/dogs get what they need, even if it is minumum requirements.

plus one of my cats doesnt eat fresh meat, she just turns her nose up to it, except seafood.

id like to have a sanctuary as well but i could never kill an animal to feed mine, that would be way too destressing for me to actual kill a living creature, im all for people who eat meat (or in your situation wanting the meat for your cats) and whatnot to find the most ethical and humane way of doing so, and maybe that is to catch your own, but i couldnt do it..

Yes I do feel the same way but the food has the nutrition and vitamins that they need. I wouldn't know what else to feed my pets  sad I do wonder if I could just feed my pets dry food instead.

I would feel guilty not feeding my dog meat.
I did initially try to feed him vegan but hew didnt like it.

The way i see it , he is disconnected from natural things like being part of a dog pack, mating with females, hunting his own food and being allowed to rome free. I think he at least deserves to eat some meat and chew on a bone.
