Greetings!

So, I've been hearing about how soy products specifically soy milk can be quite harmful for the body after long-term consumption, as apparently most are genetically modified/ processed/ and too high in oestrogen (wouldn't that be good for females? would that create hormone imbalance or fix it?)

I've stumbled upon this article which supports this:

http://www.theidealistrevolution.com/nine-foods-you-should-never-eat-again/

After all this time i've been disregarding this concern and thinking it was just a rumour but after reading this, it makes some sense and I'm very disappointed.

While there are options for an organic an GM free alternative to soy milk (expensive), I still like the ones i buy at the supermarkets and I am fond of soy milk more so than the other options like Rice/almond/oat/quinoa. (They are still enjoyable).

Also the vegan friendly products are mostly made of soy such as dairy free chocolate/ ice-cream/ and chips.

What do you guys think? Are you most conscious of this? Do you still continue to drink/eat soy?

I eat tofu regulary.

All this Soy milk is evil stuff, is a bit iffy. I'm not completely sure what to believe. I did read somewhere that tofu is fine since it's processed or whatever. However I am unsure about that.

There isn't really enough information about it, I think.

I would just consume a little less soy, drink different plant based milks. But really no one knows for sure.

Just do what you feel is right.

I just had a little look around the internet and it seems that fermented soy products are fine. I would stick to them.

Hm, I am not sure how I feel about it. I mean, too much of anything isn't the best way to go with any foods... but I wouldn't cut it out. There seems to be findings of something wrong in every food these days. I love a  hot chocolate and I use Vitasoy soy milky(NOT GENETICALLY MODIFIED) in that, I'm not going to stop that either soo I guess.. moderation if possible, unless people start instantly dying from soy disease or something, you know? You can make your own meat substitutes with vital wheat gluten, but there there's the whole gluten debacle!

Tofu is one of the healthiest things you can eat. Nothing processed is that good for you, but it is way better than meat.

Hey, I'm aware of the claims going around about soy, but have never really looked into them in any depth. You can find good alternatives to unfermented soy (e.g. dark chocolate; coconut ice-cream; seitan or tempeh mock meats) if you're trying to cut back on the amount of soy products you're consuming.

Oh, and the best named fermented soy product ... "stinky tofu". Mmm, that's what I want for dinner!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinky_tofu

I love stinky tofu!!! I have it as a side with my noodles. But yes like a couple of you do, I also consume tofu often. I'm not planning to cut down on it, I was just not sure if the whole soy-products is bad for you 100% right. Even if it is, it would probably take effect when overly-consumed. As they say, everything in moderation.

And yes tofu and soy is much healthier than meat that's for sure.

I've heard of this before too. But I know that most of the soy milks we get in Australia are non - GM because it's part of the food requirement rules or something. There is a podcast on iTunes by Colleen Patrick Godreau called "Soy is not evil" which might be worth checking out. She also talks about a lot of vegan issues and busts the myths on things like this. Shes like the mythbuster of veganism.
But I wouldn't be worried. The media is always saying things like that. One day Coffee gives you cancer, the next day, it's great for your liver.

I just looked up colleen Patrick godreau!! She is amazing! Thanks for letting me know. I've just subscribed to her as she has some interesting info and recipes. ecstatic

Btw speaking of Australian standards I think greenpeace were aiming for Australian products to at least be labelled or included on the packaging whether it is GM. I'm not sure how the progress with that is going.  But I do know that we as consumers have a right to at least know what we're consuming (not that the industry cares)

Just quickly checking the link you posted, the sources for this info is just 2 sites?
Readers digest doesn't even link the sources for some of the claims it makes and it shows foods that are obvious to skip..
None of the sources are peer reviewed?

I think the whole thing is very opinionated although I agree with some of the foods that it says you shouldn't eat..except the soy part.

Firstly, soy contains phytoestrogen which is a plant based estrogen, and unless you are drinking 6+ glasses (a ridiculous figure) a day for your whole life, it wont affect your hormone 'balance'.
Secondly, I've been drinking soy pretty regularly for about a whole year now and have no side effects (especially the all fantastic, "Soy gives men boobs!").
Thirdly, I've never found GM/GE Soy in Australia.
Lastly, read the comments some of the people are posting on that article and don't believe everything you read on the internet.

The internet is a breeding ground for bias and false facts.
