I'm just gonna suggest having your cat as an inside only cat, except when out in an outdoor run or in the yard on a harness.
Cats are so damaging to the native environment, especially animals. They are not native in Australia, so our native prey animals haven't yet evolved to be able to protect or defend themselves from cats.
As well as that it's dangerous for the cat. They can easily be poisoned or killed by someone who hates cats (I've met people that kill cats for fun, and it's legal because they can just say they thought it was a feral). A lot of people hate cats. I had an outdoor one once that came home, and the vet and us think it was most likely somebody kicked the poop out of her . They can be hit by cars, get in fights with other animals, killed by dogs, get lost.
Much safer for the cat and wild animals to keep the cat inside IMO.
I can't agree more with this. I live in a small complex of units and my neighbors have cats running around. Apart from being very annoying (fighting at night, running all over our car, using my garden as a littler box etc) it's really, really bad for the environment and for their safety. On many occasions I have had to chase them away from stalking native birds. It is also really scary when we are trying to drive around because they will often just lay on the road and not bother to get up until you get out and chase them away. It would be so easy to accidentally run over one. The other day a cat went missing from the complex and they found it a few days later, it had wandered off and had been hit by a car.
For your cat's safety, for the environment and for your own piece of mind, please keep your cat indoors or in a safe enclosure. It's great that you are adopting a cat and not supporting overpopulation (or even possibly animal cruelty) by buying from a breeder or pet shop. Well done!
