It is SO hard to find good vegan foods... I'm not quite sure if it is vegan but Sanitarium Not Burgers are a regular in our household and i have just been looking up the ingredients online (trying to be more strict) and it says it has disodium ribonucleotide listed as a flavour enhancer which wikipedia lists as this:

Disodium 5'-ribonucleotides, E number E635, is a flavor enhancer which is synergistic with glutamates in creating the taste of umami (a savoury taste). It is a mixture of disodium inosinate (IMP) and disodium guanylate (GMP) and is often used where a food already contains natural glutamates (as in meat extract) or added monosodium glutamate (MSG). It is primarily used in flavored noodles, snack foods, chips, crackers, sauces and fast foods. It is produced by combining the sodium salts of the natural compounds guanylic acid (E626) and inosinic acid (E630).

Guanylates and inosinates are generally produced from meat, but partly also from fish. They are thus not suitable for vegans and vegetarians.[1]

So does this mean its not even vegetarian?

Thanks anyone who responds I see it pays to ask on these forums, you get more information then relying on the companies pre written responses.

Thanks again!

By the way..anyone who wants to look up any food additives there's an awesome site :

I have a great app on my phone (android) called E numbers...you basically type in the number on any food item and it confirms whether it is vegan friendly/toxic/animal derived etc. I would assume there is an iphone version.

Whereabouts in NSW are you? There may be other options I could recommend happy

edit: I just ran that e-number through the app and it should be avoided...Nasty stuff!

Frys are super yummy. There's a lot of choice out there. If you can find a good asian grocer they'll often have some delicious faux meats to try too.
However if you're wanting to have healthy faux meats, sure they can be hard to come by. Why not try making some of your own?

Yeah, Fry's sells some great stuff. It's all vegan. The mushroom pies rule.

I thought Not Burgers had some milk in them anyway?

dont worry about micro ingredients and animal derived chemicals.
It is insane to worry about them.
I think it is the absolute worse thing you can do as a vegan because it makes our diet look impossible and makes veganism look like a ridged cult.

I agree that 'numbers' can be frustrating. However each to their own. It's also how you present yourself as a Vegan. When people say to me 'man, it must be hard finding stuff to eat', I reply- well it's just like choosing any product for the first time- you're faced with multiple options (i.e.: brands, content variation, health bens etc) and you spend the time to decide and then you usually stick to it. Everyone has different criteria for purchasing- cheapest item etc for us it's the veganist item happy

I often find having a conversation about 'numbers' or additives with non-vegans beneficial, they are often surprised about what crap is in their food and might find interest for health reasons.

I feel your pain, I recently found out that my favourite Quorn products all contain egg, and some cheese. This was fine as a vegetarian but now I am going vegan my options are even more limited.

Here in Mackay, QLD, there's not a lot of vegan options either. Just south of us (Rockhampton) is the beef capital of Australia, so this is strictly carnivore country.

Anthony: I've also just discovered Fry's products, and I'm really glad they also offer a schnitzel, which was my favourite Quorn product. I wish I could find some decent vegan sausages though, the Sanitarium ones are horrible and in light of this topic, they may not even be veg...

Edit: There's always tofu tongue
