There is no doubt that many of us on this site have seen the documentary Earthlings, amongst other films. These films provide a source of both inspiration, and enlightment.  But what about other forms of entertainment? Being a music fan, there are many songs that inspire me, especially lyrically. And so, I thought I would start a post to highlight some of the songs that inspire me.  Feel free to add your own favourite songs, that are relevant topics in regards to animal liberation. I will start the thread with two songs by British grindcore legends, Napalm Death.

'Instinct Of Survial', though just as much about anti-capitalism, is also aimed at how we treat animals, and blindly eat what we buy from supermarkets.  The third line of the second verse pretty much says it.

'Instinct Of Survial'
from the Scum album (Earache)
by Napalm Death

Advertise the product you make,
never give, but always take.
Kill and lie for security.
On supermarket shelves death to see.

Instinct of survival

Advertise the product you make,
never give and always take,
clingfilmed flesh and genocide,
contented life, while millions die.

Instinct of survival

The multinational corporation
takes its profits from the Starving Nations.
Indigenous people become their slaves
from their births into their graves.

The multinational corporation
takes its profits from the starving nations.
Another product for you to buy,
you'll keep paying, until you die.

A great song that talks about how we treat animals as a commodity.

'Display For Me'
from the Enslavement To Obliteration album
by Napalm Death

Domesticate me
Into your ideal creation
Fondle me
When in need of attention

Brutalise me
As a target for your aggression

Inject me
With your putrid diseases
Stretch my senses
Beyond the peak of insanity

Why practice methods of prevention
When I can pay for your hideous mistakes?

Blind me
With cosmetic filth
To form the mask that hides your guilt
Insecure, uncaring clowns
Your dolled-eyes don't see
The suffering I've prolonged
For your wretched vanity

Chew on my flesh
With perverted lust
Display to me
The depths of your compassion

As you excrete
My digested corpse
Into the shit-pan
My place of rest.

They are some good lyrics. They have a point about capitalism. It in its current form is the reason for alot of the ills of the world.

The whole point of capitalism is the promotion of greed and the drive for profit at all social cost. Alot of the world's problems can be put down to capitalism (animal abuse on factory farms being just one of them).

Anyway that's my anti capitalist rant lol.

Assuming socialism or communism is better for animals though. But the songs are great.

The song was written in the 80's but of course is still relevant today, and probably will be in another hundred years time.  And yes, capitalism is the cause for many world problems unfortunately.

You are right as well Kelsey.  Any form of Government will not fix the problems on how we treat animals. That has to come from within i.e. the individual making the conscious decision that eating meat etc is wrong.

Todays song is from crust metaller's SSS, who also hail from England.

It was around about the time that the Four Corners story came out, about the animal abuse in Indonesia, when I first heard this song.  Reading the lyrics hit me immediately because of that particular Animas Australia expose.  This is a great song as it both highlights how we callously treat animals, as well as speaks from the animals point of view. 'The Kill Floor' obviously representing an abattoir.

'The Kill Floor'
from the Problems To The Answers album (Earache Records)
by SSS (Short Sharp Shock)

mass production slick automation
efficient killing machine to feed all nations
disassemble line that lives behind closed doors
enter single file leave another form

set us free and why do you do this to me?
generations scream out wide eyed in disbelief
disconnect

quicker fatter bigger leaner
cut and drained out need it faster cheaper
by the knocker sticker shackler rumper
the knuckle dropper naval boner

set us fee and why do you do this to me?
generations scream out wide eyed in disbelief
this is it... this is the end of the line

stunned and dropped your dazed but not dead
cruel distress gets you fed
hung on chains by the legs your throat slit
feeling nothing but full
skin stripped off one hits the floor
glass walls provoke thought
soft offal innards spray onto white walls

the kill floor, the kill floor

Kicking Dave Mustaine out of Metallica was probably the best thing they ever did, as if they hadn't, we would never have had Megadeth.  Dave has long been preaching about the ills of the world, but this song, from the album of the same now, is a  good look into the atrocity of hunting for sport.

'Countdown To Extinction'
from the Countdown To Extinction album
by Megadeth

Endangered species, caged in fright
Shot in cold blood, no chance to fight
The stage in set, now pay the price
An ego boost don't think twice
Technology, the battle's unfair
You pull the hammer without a care
Squeeze the trigger that makes you Man
Pseudo-safari, the hunt is canned ...
The hunt is canned

All are gone, all but one
No contest, nowhere to run
No more left, only one
This is it, this is the Countdown to Extinction

Tell the truth, you wouldn't dare
The skin and thophy, oh so rare
Silence speaks louder than words
Ignore the guilt, and take your turn
Liars anagram is "lairs"
Man you were never even there
Killed a few feet from the cages
Point blank, you're so courageous ...
So courageous

[Chorus]

One hour from now
Another species of life form
Will disappear off the face of the planet
Forever ... and the rate is accelerating

Today I thought we would take a little break from the 'metal' lyrics and add a song by The Smiths.  I think the song title says it all.

'Meat Is Murder'
from the Meat Is Murder album (Rough Trade)
by The Smiths

Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It's death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER

And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is MURDER
And the turkey you festively slice
Is MURDER
Do you know how animals die ?

Kitchen aromas aren't very homely
It's not "comforting", cheery or kind
It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
Of MURDER

It's not "natural", "normal" or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour
Of MURDER

NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
Oh ... and who hears when animals cry?
