hi everyone,

I recently become vegetarian but im finding it quite hard in a meat devouring family to just eat the sambe bowl of salad each night.

with this in mind, what faux meats do people recommend? Ive heard about the linda McCartney range but have never seen them in Australia. what does everyone here do?

thanks,

Linda mc Cartney range is now being sold at selected foodlands. Coles sells Quorn in the freezer section and sanitarium in the fridge section. Woolworthes does some Quorn range too and they also stock their own macro range in the fridge section.

I love Fry's (it's in a green box) and I can get it at Coles or Woolies! It's vegan (as opposed to Quorn that has egg white in it). The schnitels are amazing (my omnivore partner prefers them to chicken ones!), the buger patties are great on the BBQ and I've fooled omnivores with the chicken style strips (in a  burrito!) but I'm not a huge fan of the pies. They're a bit.... I dunno salty or chickeny lol. I used to like them, but after having one last night I think I'll stick to my schnitzels lol

I love Fry's! I can vouch for the shnitzels too - amazing. And their products are vegan.

Vegie Delights, and Australian Eatwell do some good sausages and patties:

These are all available from Coles and Woolworths. You can find them in the fridge section near the fruit & veg (Vegie Delights + Australia Eatwell) and also the freezer section (Fry's).

Lamyong does an incredible faux meat range - pretty much any type of meat you can think of. But they aren't sold at general supermarkets.

I've found them at vegan and asian/indian grocers.

I love Fry's products! I also do most of my grocery shopping in a larger regional town and they've always got some of their range so I would think they're available at most of the bigger supermarkets.

Lol, I rarely eat salads, I cook most of my veggies or blend them into a smoothie, but I should have more since I like them tongue
Quorn products taste just like meat. When vegetarian I ate their products, and the amount of meat eaters that ate them without knowing they were fake and thought they were good.... My brother who isn't a huge vegetable fan and things not eating meat is stupid had the quorn dippers, and after two bites of them, exclaimed to his fiance (Taste this! Best chicken EVER!!).
He looked like he was going to have a heart failure when we told him what it was, but thankfully he accepted it and kept eating them haha.

I now eat frys products sometimes when I want something meaty.
Or more often sanitarium Not burgers, and sometimes their bbq sausages. Haven't tasted their other vegan products.

I don't eat a lot of fake meats anymore though. I'm getting good at make nice tofu dishes, and I eat a lot of chickpeas and lentils, which are really easy to cook with.

Also instead of just salad, why not make a vegetable stir fry? Or veggie pasta? I like to add grated carrot and zucchini into my pasta (Hardly any taste even when I add heaps, but good for you), chopped mushrooms, the sauce and sometimes sunflower/pumkin seeds.

In regards to faux meats that I eat on a regular basis:

Schnitzelss (both Redwood Vegi Deli nad Fry's)
Hamburgers (Fry's and Bounty Burgers)
Fishfingers (Vegi Deli)
Sausage Rolls (Linda M.)
Chicken nuggets (Fry's)
Sausages/Hot Dogs (Sanitarium)
Beef/Ham/chicken slices (Redwood Cheatin' slices)

All of them highly recommended.

As for where to get these products, I do most of my shopping via Cruelty Free Shop
(crueltyfreeshop.com.au).

As you are in S.A. like me though, you might want to try either the Norwood or Henley Square Foodland's, as they both have a huge amount of vegan foods.  Most Coles and Woolworths do not have a huge range in SA, though you should find stuff like Sanitarium pretty easily.

As someone has mentioned Cafe Bliss, I believe they also stock a lot of vegan products.

Finally, check out Everything Vegan. It is run by the girls who run Vegan Online.  The shop has only been open for a few weeks,  but is quite good, and they carry, obviously, ONLY vegan products.  There shop is at:
270 Wright Street in the city (near West Terrace)

If you want to cook a lot of faux meat may I also suggest a George Foreman Griller, which are pretty cheap to buy.  I cook most of my faux meats in that, and usually only takes a couple of mintues.  Yes, I am lazy, ha ha.
