Hey everyone,
I am going to Europe in just over a week. Any vegans on here that have been?
Is it hard to find food? Or do you have any other advice on being vegan whilst travelling?
I have been on Happy Cow and have found limited results so I'm hoping it wont be that hard while I am away.
Thanks
If you're going to Hungary, try one of the local specialties- langos. It's basically fried flat bread with your choice of a yummy veggie topping. It shouldn't be too hard to find vegan food- just remember that a lot of bakeries and take out places use lard/ animal fat to fry stuff in.
If you visit the UK you will have more choices than you have ever seen in Australia. In places like Spain, Portugal etc there will be very little choice unfortunately and unless you speak the language it can be very hard to communicate your needs. Paris and Amsterdam are a little better in terms of choices.
Yea the UK is great. Google vegan London and go nuts There is also a health food chain called Holland and Barrett which sells all kinds of vegan goodies and Superdrug is like a Priceline but all of their own brand stuff is not tested on animals (although not necessarily vegan so check labels).
Maoz is a felafel chain which I remember having in both UK and Amsterdam. And I remember Berlin being pretty good for food but I can't remember the names of any specific places sorry.
A relative recently came back from travelling Western Europe.
She advised me:
Establishments will be difficult to ask for a vegan meal but if the markets and small groceries have the freshest and the best fruit& vegetables around.
Though she is not veg by any means her friend was and lived off markets, small buisness' and fruit grocers for the month she was there.
In France, you can definitely request something vegan. The waiters will be a bit confused though. They will make something for you but be aware it might be quite simple and bland like steamed veggies.
I'm pretty sure most plain bakery bread is vegan.
Also if you can find a health food store THEY ARE AMAZING. Although it's a bit expensive there's a massive range of products. For instance I bought these packaged quinoa salads and subtly put them on my steamed veggies at restaurants.
And the chocolate 'yoghurt' (it's like mousse) is so good.
