Just lost my rabbit to myxomatosis. I was never told that they released this virus and I had no knowledge of the existence of it prior to my rabbit's death.
What kind of sick human being releases this deadly virus without having a vaccine for pets!!?!?!??!?
Some people are just disgusting.. no compassion whatsoever!
Oh no! That's horrible! I'm so sorry to hear that. It is truly saddening that peopl think it's ok to try and eradicate 'ferals' by such horrible means when there are more humane options available. I know where I live people lay Fox Off all the time which means we have to be super careful to watch what dogs consume and ensure they don't wander. I hope it was at least a peaceful end to life for your rabbit.
There is a vaccine but it is not available in Australia. When they brought the strain to Australia, it wiped out 99% of the rabbit population. Wild rabbits have since evolved to resist the disease but unfortunately, the same cannot be said for our bunnies.
It is so frustrating that they don't allow Australia to have the vaccine. The only thing we can do for our bunnies is keep them away from wild rabbits and mosquitoes and even then there is still a risk.
I am so sorry that your bunnies passed because of this awful disease. Hopefully one day we will get the vaccine.

Wild rabbits are not resistant to the disease. The vaccine has not been released here as there is concern that it will cause the wild rabbit population to become completely immune.
Actually a friend has told me that there are rabbits around her rural property who have become immune to the virus. They are about three times the size of pet rabbits she says.
Oh I'm sorry to hear that, rabbits are such problem pets. Least round here, if people didn't keep dumping them we'd be closer to not having the council release the awful virus.
It is quite sad that they don't offer a vaccine. I can see why, still...
