This year we are asking people to suggest to their workplaces an alternative way to celebrate the Melbourne cup... Below is the message we sent to our workplace. They have generously decided to balance the office sweepstake with the alternative to donate to a chosen charity. We have already raised over $100 and it is not even race day.

If you want to do the same it is not too late. Cut and paste this message - offer to collect the donations and make it fun. Tell them how many bales of hay they have helped buy, halters, lead ropes. Set the challenge to raise enough to buy new rugs for these horses who so badly need them. You can make a difference ... just think if 50 workplaces did this what a difference it would make to the charities and the work they can do and the horses they can save...

Thousands of horses are bred to race and don't make it to the gates. They too slow, they are too nervous, their temperament is not right for the racing industry. Some race and win, and still they don't have a home for life. Many of these horses are sold to the meat market and have no chance. But you can make a difference. There are many registered and reputable charities who work hard to give these noble, gentle creatures a second chance. You can help them. As little as $100 can save a horses life.

What do think you will spend this season on your spring racing dress, hat, sweeps and champagne? How would it feel to spend this on changing the fate of one of these special animals.
