Persecution from the Middle Ages onwards eradicated the otter from large parts of the UK. Now, following intense conservation efforts, the species is making a comeback, especially in Scotland.

While many people are delighted to see otters, there’s always somebody going to complain, and in this case it is the owners of fisheries. They claim the otters are taking too many fish, and some are demanding a cull.

The European otter is still listed as “near threatened” on the IUCN Red List and the populations are only beginning to recover in Scotland. A cull would be ridiculous, especially given the popularity of otters with both residents and tourists.

Tell the Scottish government to resist all demands for an otter cull.

target: German International Animal Wildlife Federation

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get this German Animal Conservationist fired from his “job” because of his fun activities of hunting and killing the animals he should be protecting. This “wildlife advocate” has been seen in photos, smiling and laughing over the elephant he has killed!!

As an animal conservationist for Germany, Udo Wedekind’s responsibility is to protect and look out for the health and well-being of animals. Yet, this man is smiling proudly over the pachyderm that he recently shot and killed while in Botswana. Germany and Botswana have very close, stable and cordial relations. However, as a professed animal conservationist, it is quite disturbing that someone who represents the German Animal Wildlife Federation.

Mr. Wedekind is supposed to be a good example and role model in preserving and protecting wildlife, despite his travels. How can you be a conservationist in your own country but go elsewhere and shoot the types of animals you are supposed to protect and care for endangered species?! It makes very little sense! Besides that, this German civil servant was boasting his achievements through photos allegedly taken as he appeared at a conference in Germany. Of his accomplishments, he stated that “the hunt was tough, it was 37 degrees in the shade and was really humid. There was also thick bush, making the going tough. It was really a challenge. I'm so happy that it ended with a real hunting victory.”

Botswana has since passed a law that bans elephant hunting although it was not in place at the time of this incident. The fact remains, though, that this man was in a capacity to protect and conserve wildlife, whether hunting was allowed or not. It is definitely against his vows as a conservationist and Mr. Wedekind should not hold such a position! Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get this German Animal Conservationist fired from his “job” because of his fun activities of hunting and killing the animals he should be protecting.

Wanganui Pound is one of only a few in New Zealand still using gas as an acceptable method of killing pound dogs.

Gassing any animal to death is painful, cruel, and barbaric. Dogs are often frightened and distressed while being crammed into the gas chamber, usually in multiple amounts. What is humane about this? In many shelters WORLDWIDE this has been completely out ruled, so why is this still happening here??

We are calling for a total ban on this completely inhumane method of killing pound dogs. The Wanganui District Council needs to stand up, take notice and make the necessary changes to provide the pound with the resources they need so these animals, where necessary, can be euthanized humanely by injection.

Animals deserve to be treated with respect, even in death.

Please help us make a difference by signing our petition and spreading the word!

(please note this petition is not in anyway trying to prevent dogs from being killed but rather just to prevent the gass killings... please if your like me add a comment when signing requesting ALL killings be stopped)

National animal advocacy groups are taking up the fight to stop an ag gag bill that would criminalize whistleblowers who expose animal cruelty and other problems on farms in Idaho.

The bill, SB 1337, is being pushed as an “agricultural security measure” and is moving quickly through the legislature with support from the Idaho Dairymen’s Association and other agricultural producers. It’s already been sent to the Senate for a vote by the Agricultural Affairs Committee.

Senator Jim Patrick, the bill’s sponsor, told KTVB the intent is to protect farmers from several things, including trespassing, theft, wrongful employment and recordings taken undercover. Conviction for interfering with an agricultural operation under this bill could result in one year in jail and fines of up to $5,000 for each offense, regardless of whether or not someone forced their way in to obtain evidence or went undercover. In this case, the bill goes so far that it could prohibit filming on public lands that are leased for grazing.

According to Patrick, extremist animal activists are “comparable to marauding invaders centuries ago who swarmed into foreign territory and destroyed crops to starve foes into submission.”

“This is clear back in the sixth century B.C.,” Patrick told the Idaho Statesman. “This is the way you combat your enemies.”

If undercover investigators were destructive and marauding sixth century invaders were intent on exposing animal cruelty and supporting free speech or our right to know where our food comes from, he might have a point. Otherwise, not so much.

Opponents are arguing that this is a heavy handed response to an undercover investigation by Mercy for Animals (MFA) that exposed horrific cruelty at Bettencourt Dairy in 2012, which resulted in the arrest of a manager and two workers who were charged with animal cruelty and a change in policy regarding the cruel practice of tail docking from Kraft Foods.

These types of investigations have opened our eyes to what we might not otherwise know about and have led to changes in laws and convictions for cruelty in other cases. Without them our ability to make informed decisions or generate a dialogue about what is and isn’t acceptable when it comes to animal agriculture is stripped away. Numerous attempts were made in 2013 to pass this type of legislation and they all failed for good reason.

Instead of taking meaningful action to ensure that incidents like the ones that took place at Bettencourt don’t happen again, Idaho’s lawmakers are going overboard to cover them up and to ensure that no one ever finds out about animal cruelty, food safety violations or environmental crimes that happen behind closed doors.

“This bill is an obvious attempt to keep consumers in the dark, threaten public health, food safety, and to shield animal abusers from public scrutiny,” said Matt Rice, director of investigations for MFA.

The Humane Society of the United States created an ad to remind everyone about what happened at Bettencourt and encourage people to speak out against whistleblower suppression legislation in Idaho.

TAKE ACTION!

Please sign and share the petition urging Idaho’s lawmakers to kill this bill and instead support transparency in agriculture. Agribusinesses should not be shielded from accountability, while those who bring cruelty and inhumane treatment to light and allow consumers to make informed choices are punished.

UPDATE: Officials Call Off Two of Three UK Badger Culls -
Because both badgers and cows can fall ill to a deadly disease, bovine tuberculosis, UK officials planned two badger cull pilots, in which people would cruelly shoot badgers in Gloucestershire and Somerset. The two pilot programs were called off -- but there's still a third cull planned in Dorset. Every day, millions of children in India wake up with nothing to look forward to except hours of back-breaking labour working everywhere from stone quarries to carpet factories to rice mills. Children as young as 5 years old are kept from school, forced to work 7 days a week for up to 18 hours a day and end up with crippling injuries, respiratory disorders and chronic pain.

Thankfully, the Indian Parliament is considering legislation called the "Child and Adolescent Labour Abolition Bill."

This legislation would put an end to the enslavement of children in India but it risks not passing without a demonstration of mass public support.

For every day the bill is delayed, several children remain at risk of being bought and sold to work in unimaginable conditions of sex slavery, bonded labour and domestic servitude.

Call on the Indian Parliament to immediately pass the "Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill" and end child slavery in India.

USDA: STOP FEEDING DEAD PIGLETS TO THEIR MOTHERS!

BY: Chris Wolverton
TARGET: United States Department of Agriculture
About this Petition
A fast-spreading pig disease called porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has killed over 2 million piglets in the U.S. since April 2013. Iron Maiden, a hog farm in Kentucky, has been grinding the dead piglets into smoothies, which they then feed to sows, possibly the piglets' own mothers.

The Humane Society's website caught this horrific practice on video during an underground investigation. The video also captures other forms of factory farm cruelty, including gestation crates. Piglets are kept in filthy, cramped conditions which encourage the spread of PEDV.

Iron Maiden is feeding sows these grim smoothies to prevent them from catching PEDV themselves. But if they improved conditions for all pigs, they would be healthier and less likely to get the disease in the first place. There is no point in raising more animals if they're just going to die of PEDV due to cramped and unsanitary conditions. Please sign the petition to urge the USDA to ban Iron Maiden and all farms from feeding dead piglets to their own mothers!
