Commercial fishing causes immense suffering. As animals are dragged from depths many are crushed by the sheer weight of other animals caught in the same net. Many suffer from decompression - their swimming bladders explode and their eyes balloon out. If they survive this, then they are often left to suffocate to death on board fishing vessels.
Most of us know Mitsubishi as a car company. But did you know that a company in the Mitsubishi Group also trades in endangered species?
Mitsubishi owns 35-40% of the market for the critically endangered Bluefin Tuna. Blue fin tuna are one of thousands of species threatened by over-fishing. Last year, a report estimated that Atlantic Bluefin Tuna will be extinct by 2012 unless we stop fishing them. And yet Mitsubishi has been buying and deep freezing thousands of these animals.
Why would Mitsubishi want Bluefin Tuna? To cash in on the big bucks many people pay to eat this endangered species. Mitsubishi have even been accused of deep freezing these fish to make an even bigger profit as the species gets ever closer to being completely wiped out.
Outraged? So are we! Profiting off the slaughter of an endangered species is about as low as it gets!
So now it's time to get vocal. Speak up for bluefin tuna. Send a message to Mitsubishi calling on them to help end the slaughter of Bluefin Tuna.
